  • This study conducted foundational research to derive ways to use ChatGPT in mathematics education by analyzing ChatGPT's responses to questions from the National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) and the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence model, has gained attention in various fields, and there is a growing demand for its use in education as the number of users rapidly increases. To the best of our knowledge, there are very few reported cases of educational studies utilizing ChatGPT. In this study, we analyzed ChatGPT 3.5 responses to questions from the three-year National Assessment of Educational Achievement and the College Scholastic Ability Test, categorizing them based on the percentage of correct answers, the accuracy of the solution process, and types of errors. The correct answer rates for ChatGPT in the National Assessment of Educational Achievement and the College Scholastic Ability Test questions were 37.1% and 15.97%, respectively. The accuracy of ChatGPT's solution process was calculated as 3.44 for the National Assessment of Educational Achievement and 2.49 for the College Scholastic Ability Test. Errors in solving math problems with ChatGPT were classified into procedural and functional errors. Procedural errors referred to mistakes in connecting expressions to the next step or in calculations, while functional errors were related to how ChatGPT recognized, judged, and outputted text. This analysis suggests that relying solely on the percentage of correct answers should not be the criterion for assessing ChatGPT's mathematical performance, but rather a combination of the accuracy of the solution process and types of errors should be considered.

  • In this study we grasp what contents in the mathematics curriculum the students of multicultural and North Korean migrant families are vulnerable to and we would like to provide the bases to devise the appropriate teaching and learning methods for them. In order to this work we used the results of 2011 National Assessment Educational Achievement. We categorized students from multicultural and North Korean migrant families into children from international marriage family (born in country or immigrated), foreign family, and North Korean migrant family and compared each category with the whole students. First, for each school class we analyzed characteristics of academic achievement by ratio of achievement level, means of calibrated score, and percentages of correct answers in NAEA, mean percentages of correct answers by content domains, and percentages of correct answers by items. In addition to these we analysed items qualitatively and investigated study conditions in which the students of multicultural and North Korean migrant families have difficult times. In every subgroup the more ratio of advanced level decreases and ratio of below basic level increases the more school classes go up. Also these phenomena appear differently by each group and by content domain. For this reason by group, the supporting on learning will be needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the effects of the learner-centered instruction based on constructivism on learners' reasoning ability and their achievements which is closely related to reflective abstracting ability. To do it, learner-centered instructions for division was implemented, recall test, generation test, content reasoning test I and II were carried out. The following conclusions were drawn from the data we got. Experimental group(EG) improved their reasoning ability, while comparison group(CG) did not. EG showed statistically significant difference in the achievements of the contents learned in comparing with CG, and the difference in the achievements of the contents unlearned in the treatment in comparing with CG was higher than the one. In addition, the comparisons of the subgroups(high, middle, and low) between EG and CG showed that the treatment had a positive influence on the achievement to all subgroups in EG. That is, the treatment was effective for unable learners. Finally, EG showed statistically significant difference in the sub-domain of simple calculation which might be considered as the benefits of the treatment of the CG as well as in the sub-domain of concept and principle.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the effects 6th grade mathematics lessons applying story making have on the mathematics achievement and attitude toward mathematics. For this study, using two examination devices for measuring mathematical attitudes and mathematics learning achievement, a pre-test and post-test were conducted. In the pre-test, it was found that the two groups are identical groups. The post-test was used for verifying the research problems and the results of post-test were analyzed using t-test. The findings of this study are below. First, lessons applying story making influenced the mathematics achievement of children. This implies that lessons applying story making are more effective for improving a mathematics achievement than a general teaching and learning method. Also, when carrying out the t-test of pre-test and post-test results of learning achievement in experimental groups, there was a significant change as well. It is therefore supposed that lessons applying story making have positive effect on the mathematics achievement of children. • This research aimed to explore the effects of collaborative writing activities in a mathematical context, specifically pertaining to areas such as numbers and operation, geometrical figure, and measurement in Mathematics: Level 5-b, on their mathematical achievement gain and disposition among Grade 5 students. To do this, out of a total of 62 students selected from two Grade 5 classes of J Elementary School in Dalseo-gu, Daegu City, who were found to be homogenic from the tests of math performance and dispositions, an experimental group(n=31) was designed and compared to a control group (n=31). Over a six week period from October to November in 2009, the experimental group was given collaborative writing lessons in math classes while the control group was given teacher-oriented regular lessons. The results were as follows. First, there was more or less considerable, though not significant, difference in overall mathematical achievement in the students experiencing collaborative writing activities when compared with the students in the control group. However, in terms of numbers and operation, a sub-category of mathematics, there was significant difference between the two groups. Second, the students experiencing collaborative writing activities were more positively affected in all sub-categories of mathematical disposition: confidence, flexibility, determination, curiosity, reflection, and value, than those in the control group. In summing up, the exposure of collaborative writing activities to mathematics learning was found to help students not only to have a concrete and proper grasp of the relevant problem solving process, which was observed from their mathematical achievement gain especially in the sphere of numbers and operation, but also to have their mathematical disposition set towards more positive direction, which was seen in all sub-categories of mathematical disposition measurement.

  • Longitudinal data of Korean child academic achievement have been used to find the significant exploratory variables under the assumption of independent repeated measured data. Using the exploratory variables in previous research works, we analyze the linear mixed model incorporating the fixed and random effects for child academic achievement to detect the significant exploratory variables. Korea welfare panel study data observed three times between 2006 and 2012 by additional survey for children. The child academic achievement is evaluated by the sum of academic achievements of Korean, English and Mathematics. We also investigate the multicollinearity and the missing mechanism and select some popular correlation matrices to analyze the linear mixed model.

  • One of difficulties with which teachers meet is to have underachievers with no willingness and motivation for study involved in class. Mathematics underachiever are average or above average in their intelligence but their actual achievement in mathematics did not coincide to their intellectual capabilities. The teaching strategy for them is to motivate them to try to study mathematics and to experience the improvement in their mathematics grade. In this paper, we choose flipped classroom as the strategy of teaching basic mathematics to math underachievers and applied it to them. Then we wanted to make sure the possibility for applying flipped classroom to teaching math underachievers through the analysis of change in the scholastic achievement of students in mathematics and mathematical disposition. The results of this study are as followings; First, when we taught basic math to underachievers using a flipped classroom, we confirm that math underachievers with active participation improved scholastic achievements significantly. Second, the flipped classroom was led to positive effects in an affective domain. In particular, it showed the most noticeable change in the area of willingness to math problem-solving and perception about the value of mathematics.

  • In this study, we made the analysis of the relation with mathematical tests and scholastic attainments of gifted students using the results of entrance end comprehensives exams and so on in science education center for gifted youths. For this, we firstly made an analysis of correlation between math and math, math and science and science and science using the test results. And then, we interviewed four students. From this, we found followings. First, in every assessment except for those carried out during the semester in the center, we saw a very low or negative correlation between the students' grades in math and that in science. Second, in contrast to the correlations among other assessments, a high correlation of the students' grades in math and science appeared in regard of the assessments carried out during the semester in the center. Third, correlations between the grades of assessments in mathematics were much lower than that in science. Fourth, many students thought the assessments in the center were not as valuable as those in their schools, which are referred to in getting into a school of high grade. So some of the students who gained excellent grades showed a relatively low achievement. Fifth, students in the center regarded a vigorous communication and inquiry learning on enriched themes as the biggest merit of attending the center.

  • Universities in Korea are presenting various extracurricular activities for survival and growth. Although the goals of extracurricular activities are diverse, one of the most important is to improve the academic achievement of college students. In this study, we looked at the relationship between the cumulative score of extracurricular activities by difficulty level and academic achievement. As a result, first, even if students' basic academic skills were controlled, extracurricular activities had a positive effect on student achievement. This suggests that universities should provide extracurricular activities that are more diverse and tailored to the needs of students. Second, the participation rate of female students in extracurricular activities is similar to that of male students, but the performance is very high. Third, Senior students show high levels of participation and performance. This means that it is necessary to actively increase the participation rate of female students and lower grade students. To this end, not only publicity and compensation, but also active interest and participation of instructors will be required.
