  • STEM Education in the US and Korean STEAM are reviewed. The present STEM education focuses on K-12 and it does not concern STEM education in university. In this paper, we define a STEM education that can be made available in university and we establish a way of teaching and learning differential equations based on the STEM education. The class provides students with a chance to explore the capstone design projects that are developed by seniors and do hands-on activities. We introduce and set a Mobius strip with an instant delivery pathway to solve real problems as a symbol of STEM education.

  • This study examined the implications of a place-based earth science program integrated with Mathematics. 11 pre-service earth science teachers and 22 middle school students participated in the service education activities of earth science for 30 hours focusing on the measurement of the earth's size through earth science experiments as part of the middle school curriculum. In order to minimize errors that may occur during the earth's size measurement experiments using Eratosthenes's shadows length method of the ancient Greek era, the actual data were collected after triangulation ratios were conducted in the locations of two middle schools: one in remote metropolitan and the other in rural area. The two schools' students shared the final estimate result. Through this process, they learned the mathematical method to express the actual data effectively. Participants, experienced the importance and difficulty of the repetitive and accurate data acquisition process, and also discussed the causes of errors included in the final results. It implies that a Place-Based Earth Science Program activity can contribute to students' increased-understanding of the characteristics of earth science inquiry and to developing their problem solving skills, thinking ability, and communication skills as well, which are commonly emphasized in science and mathematics in the 2015 reunion curriculum. It is expected that a place-based science program can provide a foundation for developing an integrated curriculum of mathematics and science.

  • In this paper we study meaning and methods of analyzing problems related with equation of high school mathematics. By analyzing problem we can get two types of informations. Based on these informations we suggest some problem solving methods. Especially we try to extract second type information using analysis through synthesis. This second type information can help us to find new non-routine problem solving method.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the qualitative characteristics of pre-service teachers' motivation while they are participating in group activities for developing mathematical essay assessment problem and revising it. For this purpose, we analyzed individual factors about group learning activities as well as contextual factors about practical competency (in developing and revising mathematical essay assessment problem through collecting data of student responses to the problem). As results of data analyses, autonomy, among individual factors regarding group learning activities, was one of the main characteristics in attainment value, utility value, and intrinsic value, whereas task, authority, and grouping, among contextual factors regarding practical competency, appeared to have a positive impact on task value. These results suggest how to think of specific ideas and articulate them in designing a curriculum to develop student-evaluation expertise for pre-service teachers.

  • As a theoretical background for this research, the literatures which focus on the rationale of teaching and learning of connecting with mathematics and science in calculus were investigated. And teaching and learning material of connecting with mathematics and science in calculus was developed. And then, based on the case study using this material, the research questions were analyzed in depth. Students could understand mean-velocity, instant-velocity, and acceleration in the experimenting process of constant acceleration movement. Also Students could understand fundamental ideas that instant-velocity means slope of the tangent line at one point on the time-displacement graph and rate of distance change means rate of area change under a time-velocity graph.

  • "SMART" is a word to condense a new kind of educational system recently proposed by the Korean government. It signifies an intelligent adaptive learning system to innovate the educational environment, the contents, methodology and assessment. Developing a digital textbook was one of the main strategic goals to drive forward "smart" education. The Korean government expected to finish the development of digital textbooks of science, mathematics, social studies and English by 2013 and to have a field experiment for them in 2014. However, the case of mathematics was postponed for an indefinite period because its draft version was no different from a traditional textbook in its functional aspect. This situation might come from the non-existence of a good authoring tool and an inexperienced sense by developers of the opportunities available with digital textbooks. This paper introduces the main features for developing a digital mathematics textbook for the 12th grade students, which was developed in the environment of Cabri LM as an authoring tool. This paper also looks upon the results of a whole lesson using the textbook in managing the classroom interaction with students.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify how developed program influence students' creativity by analyzing creative thinking and creative attitude which is appeared when mathematically gifted students get the program expected to improve their creativity. For the study, the 'dimension based geometry exploring program' was developed that consist of twelve lessons. The main idea of it, is implication of the novel . Through a pre and post-test, students's creativity were measured and compared. The results show significant changes on the scores of creative thinking skills and creative attitudes. As the result, mathematically gifted students' creative thinking skills and creative attitudes were improved by applying the of dimension based geometry exploring program.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine thinking process of the mathematically gifted students and how invariants affect the construction and discovery of curve when carry out activities that produce and reproduce the algebraic curves, mathematician explored from the ancient Greek era enduring the trouble of making handcrafted complex apparatus, not using apparatus but dynamic geometry software. Specially by trying research that collect empirical data on the role and meaning of invariants in a dynamic geometry environment and research that subdivide the process of utilizing invariants that appears during the mathematically gifted students creating a new curve, this study presents the educational application method of invariants and check the possibility of enlarging the scope of its appliance.

  • It is the aim of this paper to find the requisites for the target problem solving process in reference to the base problem and to search the roles of those. Focusing on the structural similarity, analytic activity and comparative activity in stage of similar mathematical problem solving process, we tried to find the roles of them. We observed closely how four students solve the target problem in reference to the base problem. And so we got the following conclusions. The insight of structural similarity prepare the ground appling the solving method of base problem in the process solving the target problem. And we knew that the analytic activity can become the instrument which find out the truth about the guess. Finally the comparative activity can set up the direction of solution of the target problem. Thus we knew that the insight of structural similarity, the analytic activity and the comparative activity are necessary for similar mathematical problem to solve. We think that it requires the efforts to develop the various programs about teaching-learning method focusing on the structural similarity, analytic activity and comparative activity in stage of similar mathematical problem solving process. And we also think that it needs the study to research the roles of other elements for similar mathematical problem solving but to find the roles of the structural similarity, analytic activity and comparative activity.

  • There are some studies on tangram a kind of jigsaw(silhouette or dissection) puzzle. And Korean national curriculums mention about tangram. But the past studies and the textbooks are not so related to curriculums. So this study is focused on some problems and limitations of tangram activities related to curriculum. This study gives some educational suggestions using tangram: (1) alternate drawing of tangram (2) making mathematical figures instead of shapes (3) proper activities related to the national curriculum (especially, polygons and angles) and mathematical thinking (4) examples of exploring mathematical figures and angles coming in and out of national curriculum In addition to, this study suggests some mathematical activities of using similar tangrams (especially sphinx puzzle).
