It described the modification of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with amphiphilic methyl methacrylate-based polyethylene glycol (PMMA-b-PEG) to enhance the hydrophilicity of a PDMS surface and cytotoxicity of it. PMMA-b-PEG solutions in water/ethanol mixture was spun-cast on the PDMS surface and the surface was characterized by long-term measurement of water contact angle. The morphology of PDMS surfaces coated with PMMA-b-PEG was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscope. Cytotoxicity of the modified surfaces was investigated by MTT assay which would be necessary for the evaluation of tissue compatibility after implantation of the materials. Based on the MTT assay, PDMS coated with PMMA-b-PEG didn't show any significant cytotoxcity.
In the development of biomaterials as a substitute of hard tissues, the biocompatibility and osteoconductivity of the biomaterial are considered to be one of the most significant considerations. These biological properties of a material can be greatly improved by the modification of the surface properties by the depositing calcium phosphate thin films on the material since calcium phosphate films possess similar chemical compositions to hard tissues. The success of a material as a biomaterial will be determined by the interaction of the surface of the material with the adhesion molecules which induce cellular adhesion and biological responses of the adherent cells. Depending on the adsorption mechanisms and adsorbed conformation of the adhesion molecules on the surface of the biomaterial, cellular responses, such as adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of osteoblast cells, can be promoted or restricted. It has been reported that materials of which surfaces were modified with thin films of calcium phosphate appeared to be more osteoconductive. Rapid formations of bone nodule in addition to higher differentiations of osteoblast have been observed on the calcium phosphate thin films.
The histochemical characteristics of the cutaneous mucous glands and its fine structure of the Korean fire bellied toad, Bombina orientolis Boulenger, were studied with light and electron microscopes. The mucous glands of the toad are simple alveolar gland, and are composed of inner glandular epithelial cells and outermost myoepithelial cells. Histochemical studies suggest that main secretory materials released from the mucous glands might be acid mucopolysaccharides which is more abundant in the ventral skin than in the dorsal skin. The scanning electron microscopic observation showed that the morphology of the opening sites of the gland duct is similar to the morphology of stomata on the plant leaves. Glandular epithelial layers of the mucous glands are composed of two cell types, the mucous secreting cells and the mitochondria rich cells. The mucous secreting cells could be classified according to the morphology and inner textures of cytoplasm and those characteristics were seemed to be related to the degree of maturation of the cells. Furthermore the mucous within the mucous secreting cells appears to be synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum.

Subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) refer to concentrations below minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). The antimicrobial agents may be present at relatively high concentration, at least higher than bacterial MIC and thereafter be deserted off a surface and function at sub-MICs, perhaps by interfering with bacterial metabolism. Consequently, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of growth, in the presence of sub-MICs of antimicrobial agents, on the cell surface properties and virulence factors of mutans streptococci and to investigate the efficacy of a chemical approach in vitro. Streptococcus mutans Ingbritt and Streptococcus sobrinus 6715-7 were used. Eight antimicrobial agents (Sanguinaria extract;SG, Chlorhexidine digluconate;CHX, Fluoride;F, Propolis;PP, Hydrogen peroxide;HP, Triclosan;TC, Sodium dodecyl sulfate;SDS Cetylpyridinium chloride; CC) were diluted serially in broth to determine MICs and to compare the growth rate, acid production, hydrophobicity, adhesion activity to saliva coated hydroxyapatite, glucan synthesis and cellular aggregation of experiment groups (in the presence of sub-MICs) with those of control (in the absence of antimicrobial agents). Sub-MICs of antimicrobial agents affected the growth of cells, hydrophobicity, and adhesion of bacteria to saliva coated hydroxyapatite and glucan synthesis. They also resulted in a significant reduction in pH after 12 hours (p<0.05). By cells pretreated with proteinase K, either the aggregation induced by antimicrobial agents was completely inhibited or the aggregation titers were markedly increased. According to the results of the present study, each antimicrobial agent at sub-MICs could affect similar as its known action mechanism and could continually inhibit cariogenic bacteria at such concentrations. Thus, the use of these antimicrobial agents would be one of the effective methods to prevent dental caries.
Copper is cost-effective and abundantly available as a biocidal coating agent for a wide range of material surfaces. Natural oxidation does not compromise the efficacy of copper, allowing it to maintain antimicrobial activity under prolonged exposure conditions. Furthermore, copper compounds exhibit a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against pathogenic yeast, both enveloped and non-enveloped types of viruses, as well as gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Contact killing of copper-coated surfaces causes the denaturation of proteins and damage to the cell membrane, leading to the release of essential components such as nucleotides and cytoplasm. Additionally, redox-active copper generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which cause permanent cell damage through enzyme deactivation and DNA destruction. Owing to its robust stability, copper has been utilized in diverse forms, such as nanoparticles, ions, composites, and alloys, resulting in the creation of various coating methods. This mini-review describes representative coating processes involving copper ions and copper oxides on various material surfaces, highlighting the antibacterial and antiviral properties associated with different oxidation states of copper.

A polyurethane (PU) surface enabling in vivo endothelialization via endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) capture was prepared for cardiovascular applications. To introduce CD34 monoclonal antibody (mAb) inducing EPC adhesion onto a surface, poly (poly (ethylene glycol) acrylate-co-butyl methacrylate) and poly (PEGA-co-BMA) were synthesized and then coated on a surface of PU, followed by immobilizing CD34 mAb. $^1H$-NMR analysis demonstrated that poly(PEGA-co-BMA) copolymers with a desired composition were synthesized. Poly(PEGA-co-BMA)-coated PU was much more effective for the immobilization of CD34 mAb, comparing with PEG-grafted PU prepared in our previous study, as demonstrated by that surface density and activity of CD34 mAb increased over 32 times. Physico-chemical properties of modified PU surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results demonstrated that the poly(PEGA-co-BMA) coating was effective for CD34 mAb immobilization and feasible for applying to cardiovascular biomaterials.
The purpose of this work is to develope sodium-containing nonstoichiometric apatitic coatings on solid substrate. The apatitic coatings prepared at different concentrations of sodium salt indicated that the presence of sodium ions exerted significant effects on the physicochemical properties of the apatitic coating including surface morphology, chemical state, and Ca/P ratio. The variation of these properties was sustained up to 0.01 mM of sodium ion concentration. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus was varied from 2.18 to 2.03 which indicated the apatitic coating prepared in this study was calcium-rich nonstoichiometric apatite. The structure of all the samples appeared to be low crystalline. In the presence of sodium ion within the apaptitic coating, the adhesion of human osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells was significantly promoted. On the other hand, the proliferation of the cells on the apatitic coatings was decreased with the increase of sodium ions. This reverse response of SaOS-2 cells indicates that the interaction between SaOS-2 and apatitic surface triggered considerable changes in intracellular mechanisms including cellular signal transductions.
The control of surface properties and spatial presentation of functional molecules within a microfluidic channel is important for the development of diagnostic assays, microreactors, and for performing fundamental studies of cell biology and fluid mechanics. Here, we present soft lithographic methods to create robust microchannels with patterned microstructures inside the channel. The patterned regions were protected from oxygen plasma by controlling the dimensions of the poly(dimethylsiloxane)(PDMS) mold as well as the sequence of fabrication steps. The approach was used to pattern a non-biofouling polyethylene glycol(PEG)-based copolymer or the polysaccharide hyaluronic acid(HA) within microfluidic channels. These non-biofouling patterns were then used to fabricate arrays of fibronectin(FN) and bovine serum albumin(BSA) as well as mammalian cells.
