  • A battle royale game is a multiplayer video game genre that blends the survival and exploration with last-man-standing gameplay. The genre has been hot in recent years and the 'Player Unknown's Battleground' produced by Korean enterprise PUBG had been the hottest during 2017 and the first half of 2018. However, a similar battle royale game 'Fortnite' became the game of the year in 2018 and the Player Unknown's Battleground sustains the predominance only in Korea and China. In this paper, we investigate the game structure of those two games on combat, survival, farming and charging elements, We also conduct a user survey on what might be the weak point of the Player Unknown's Battleground and why they choose Fornite among users played both but currently play Fortnite. The result shows that the Player Unknown's Battleground sustains the advantage on battle elements but creative charging policy and the efficient survival elements are the reasons of choosing Fortnite between the two.

  • The viewpoint of a digital game is a prime factor that determines user immersion, and first-person viewpoint is known to produce greatest immersion. However, most games adopt third-person viewpoint rather than first-person viewpoint. This study analyzed the reason for the preference of third-person viewpoint. First, six viewpoints were defined by combining three viewpoints (first-, third-person, omniscient viewpoints) and two distances (proximal, distal) between camera and game character. Then 100 games which received high ratings during the past 10 years were sampled, and the frequencies of viewpoint choices and genres were analyzed. Overall, the results showed that games have strong preference for third-person viewpoint. However, preferred viewpoints differed depending on genres, for example, most shooting games used first-person, proximal viewpoint. This result could have arisen because both characteristics of a game and field of view have influenced choice of viewpoint. That is, many games adopt third-person viewpoint because developers consider not only user immersion but also scene visibility.

  • This study analyzed changes in Korean online-game market from RPG to MOBA and FPS/TPS genre, based on Azuma Hiroki's database consumption theory. After selecting the representative game for each genre: World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and Overwatch, we analyzed the games' story, characters, progress, and simulacre produced by game users. The results of this study confirmed that changes in popular genre in the domestic online-game market proceed from consumers' verging toward database consumption. We also found that Korean game users prefer smaller stories and characters based on database, and that consumers have produced more rigorous simulacre than those in other cultural areas and re-databased it for next consumption. This study is the first to analyze changes in the domestic online-game market and adds a contribution to the literature in terms of incorporating Azuma Hiroki's consumption theory into the domestic game market.

  • Survival horror games aim to seek cathartic psychological escapism from the framed fear or hostile environment. However, if the goal of the game playing is only "survival" against hostile environment, the motivation of such environment adaptive games may not be based on the framed fear. We may call such games as "environment adaptive survival games". In this paper, we analyze the contents of six such survival games that have large user groups in Steam platform based on the pilot survey. We extract 13 almost common fun elements that induce the fun of such games. An online user survey was conducted through multiple survival game cafe to investigate who play such games. There was no gender differences in playing time but females prefer constructing tools as a fun element and play puzzle and simulation games more than males. We found that survival games could be welcomed by female users under 30 years old if 'horror' element was minimized.

Those relationships between need satisfaction and perceptual switching cost vary according to their age and game genre preference.
