A study on the northern sea route safety convoy using ship handling simulation (선박조종시뮬레이션을 이용한 북극해 안전 호송에 관한 연구)

  • Due to global warming it is estimated that the arctic ocean route will be avaliable and traffic will increase by approximately year 2030. However, most navigation in the arctic is based on the ice breaker captains'orders, there is no exact measurement of convoy speed and distance between ships. So, this research was conducted to find out the minimum safe separation distance and minimum breaking distance via ship controling simulations, and the results are as stated. For breaking distances, for ships that have a lead distance which is 2~4 times the width of the ship and traveling less than 7 knots, crash astern and crash astern & hard rudder showed no significant difference. But ships traveling at 10 knots there was a decrease in breaking distance of 1L, from 3.5L to 2.5L. By analyzing 10 subject ships by crash astern the breaking distance for 5 knots is 0.98L~1.8L, for 8 knots is 1.9L~4.0L. The minimum safe separation distance in narrow sea-ways is 6L, but as the arctic sea-way is only one-way 3L is required. As the result, it is found that in the arctic the safe escort speed is less than 5 knots, if the escort speed is 8knots or more and by using crash astern & hard rudder to break the safe distance should be kept at 3.4L.

Enlargement of Harbour limit and Anchorages according to the development of New Ulsan Port (울산 신항 개발에 따른 항계 및 정박지 확장에 관한 연구)

  • Ulsan Port is the biggest base port for liquid cargoes in Korea and is pushing in earnest for the development of the 'Ulsan New Port' and 'Northeast Asia Oil-Hub' to prepare for continuous shipment growth. However, Ulsan is in the situation which the harbour limit and anchorages are narrower than other trading ports and the occurrence probability of marine accidents is very high due to heavy marine traffic. We will find and suggest the plan to enlarge the harbour limit essentially needed to expand anchorages considering the geomorphological features of Ulsan and the volume of marine traffic in this research. For the enlargement of harbour limit needed to expand anchorages, the anchorage area needed for Ulsan New Port was calculated after the quantitative analysis of enlargement range through the mutual comparison of the area of harbour limit and anchorages with berths and the volume of marine traffic. The reasonable type of harbour limit, which is based on the survey by a group of experts, was also determined after the decision of the range of harbour limit to accommodate the relevant anchorages.

Analysis of Correlation between Marine Traffic Congestion and Waterway Risk based on IWRAP Mk2 (해상교통혼잡도와 IWRAP Mk2 기반의 항로 위험도 연관성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Several types of mathematical analysis methods are used for port waterway risk assessment based on marine traffic volume. In Korea, a marine traffic congestion model that standardizes the size of the vessels passing through the port waterway is applied to evaluate the risk of the waterway. For example, when marine traffic congestion is high, risk situations such as collisions are likely to occur. However, a scientific review is required to determine if there is a correlation between high density of maritime traffic and a high risk of waterway incidents. In this study, IWRAP Mk2(IALA official recommendation evaluation model) and a marine traffic congestion model were used to analyze the correlation between port waterway risk and marine traffic congestion in the same area. As a result, the linear function of R2 was calculated as 0.943 and it was determined to be significant. The Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated as 0.971, indicating a strong positive correlation. It was confirmed that the port waterway risk and the marine traffic congestion have a strong correlation due to the influence of the common input variables of each model. It is expected that these results will be used in the development of advanced models for the prediction of port waterway risk assessment.

Marine traffic survey to improve safety of vessel traffic at Busan South Port (부산남항 선박통항 안전성 향상을 위한 해상교통량 조사)

  • To establish a vessel safety management system for improving the safety of vessel's traffic and preventing vessel's traffic accidents, the state of marine traffic in the Busan South Port was investigated and analyzed as preliminary survey of the countermeasures. As a result of the study, there are 1,158 vessels in a day, 48 vessels in an hour, and the maximum traffic is about 118 vessels between 16:00 and 17:00 hours everyday, which requires to establish and operate a traffic control system necessarily for ensuring vessel's traffic safety. Furthermore, passages of tanker, passenger ship, cargo vessel and government vessel showed to sail along main traffic lane to be obtained enough sea depth at the survey area. However, passages of fishing vessel and launch showed to sail freely at all survey area owing to outstanding maneuverability and a shallow draft. Some vessels of launch sailed along main traffic lane, but other vessels crossed to sail it. The passages to cross main traffic lane is higher the risk of collision. Therefore, safety measures are urgently needed for the operation of the Busan South Port management system and the prevention of marine pollution.

  • Marine traffics near Ulsan approaching waters are crossing and converged at the diverging point of No.1 route-No.2 route and No.1 route-No.3 route and are also concentrated at near No1. route approaching area and the headland of Gawn-Jel.   • The navigation area approach to Mokpo port consists of narrow channels with 30mile section, and the route is crossed with many fairways. Specially, except Mokpo-Gu fairway routeing is not assigned and there are many threatening factors against the safe operation of vessel because fishing and mining areas are designated Therefore, this paper proposed a plan for safe passage through a maritime transportation environmental assessment with the analysis of surrounding environment, danger element of navigation, traffic observation and marine accidents.

To mitigate the danger to vessels in Gwangyang harbor and to secure the safety of maritime environment, we established one way traffic between No.3 Route and No.4 Route, Designed of deep water line on No.3 route, Extended one-way route for Myo-Do Passage etc.

  • VTS operators may suffer from acute, chronic, or traumatic stress caused by their workload and working environments associated with task or combination of task. This study intended to measure the level of VTS operator' stress and find out factors influencing it by understanding their characteristics during carrying out their task. For this purpose, analyzed the data collected through conducting survey on VTS operators as the Korea Occupational Stress(KOSS) and Psychological Well-being Index(PWI). As a result, VTS operators are experiencing higher level of psychological stress than the national average. And the factors to cause VTS operators' occupational stress can be summarized as follows; working environment factors, shift work especially night duty, workload, etc. This study provides the fundamental information for understanding human factors of VTS operator' occupational stress.

  • As AIS AtoN has worked an essential role for aids to navigation, the World-wide IALA-Net has announced plans to build the system. Systematic beacon network may offer opportunities to make an infrastructure for information service and upgrade AtoN service performance. This paper proposes Aids to Navigation information service network for e-NAV. Network based on AIS is consist of AIS AtoN channels as Real, Synthetic or Virtual AIS AtoN. And inner network is consist of Wireless networks as AIS, WCDMA, WIFI, WIBRO, USN or VSAT. Introducing of various network systems can lead to combine and design aomong land, beacon and service network infrastructures.
