19세기 아편전쟁에 참가했던 중국 학자의 한사람이었던 위원은 '해국도지'라는 책을 통해 서양기술을 우리나라에 처음 전해준 사람이다. 대원군때 전해온 이 책은 우리 선조들에게 서양기술의 교과서처럼 활용되었다. 아편전쟁을 치르면서 나라를 막고 지키자는 생각을 하는 사람들과는 다르게 '서양을 배워 서양을 이기자'는 구호를 내건 위원은 '해국도지'라는 책을 통해 서양의 대포와 군함 그리고 서양의 역법, 망원경 만드는 법, 서양의 천문학에 이르기까지 여러가지 과학내용을 담고 있다.

This study analyzed Korean university libraries' holdings of Western language books published in 2003 and 2013 using the KERIS union catalog with a view to investigating the changes in collection development of Western language books in the libraries. To do that, new collection indexes - holding h-index, CUI (Collection Uniqueness Index), and CCHR (Common Collection Holding Ratio) - were suggested, and they were used with basic indexes such as the number of titles, the number of books, and the number of books per title. The analysis reveals that compared to those published in 2003, the number of titles was decreased by 16.1% with those published in 2013, and the number of books dropped more sharply, by 42.2%. Also, in 2013, CCHR was decreased while CUI was increased. In terms of subject, among DDC main classes, 0XX (Generalities) showed the greatest decrease rate in both the number of titles and books because of the radical reduction of computer-related books. In terms of each library's holdings, the number of Western language books held by top libraries has been increased with those published in 2013.

In the climate of increasing calls for academic assessment, the author undertook a study to ascertain availability of original texts and their translations in the academic library. The object of this study is to compare the use frequency of original texts by academic major of users in the university libraries. To achieve this object, the author collected the data stored in 3 Korean university library online systems from September 10th to 30th, 1995 and tested the hypotheses by using the Minitab statistical package. Libraries with multilingual collection and automated systems will find the methodology Presented here Particularly valuable.

This study investigated the representation and algorithms of western mathematics reflected on the algebra domains of Chosun-Sanhak in the 18th century. I also analyzed the co-occurrences and replacement phenomenon between western algorithms and traditional algorithms. For this purpose, I analyzed nine Chosun mathematics books in the 18th century, including Gusuryak and Gosasibijip. The results of this study are as follows. First, I identified the process of changing to a calculation by writing of western mathematics, from traditional four arithmetical operations using Sandae and the formalized explanation for the proportional concept and proportional expression. Second, I observed the gradual formalization of mathematical representation of the solution for a simultaneous linear equation. Lastly, I identified the change of the solution for square root from traditional Gaebangsul and Jeungseunggaebangbeop to a calculation by the writing of western mathematics.

Since the recent financial crisis in universities has caused the decrease of academic library budget, the resource sharing has been considered by utilizing inter-library loan (ILL) data for solving the financial deficit. This study aims to identify the collection profiles of western monographs' ILL data among 4-year academic libraries. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, this study analyzes ILL data from 2011 to 2017 using the bibliographic data and ILL transactions of the KERIS union catalog. The findings of the study show that the western monographs was significantly provided by large-scale academic libraries in 2011, however, the extent of major regions expanded, and the number of influential institutions rose in 2016. Second, in 2012, the influence in the ILL network increased in the quantity of western monographs holdings and the proportion of common collections. On the other hand, in 2016, it was also shown that the influence in terms of provision in the ILL network increased in the proportion of unique collections. Lastly, the ILL participating academic libraries were classified into six clusters by a hierarchical clustering analysis of holdings and ILL indexes.

1631년 조선조 인조때 명나라 사신으로 갔던 정두원은 당시 중국에서 활동하던 포르투갈 선교사 로드리게스로부터 망원경, 서포, 자명종 등을 기증받아 서양문물을 처음 들여왔다. 우리나라에 서양문물을 처음 전한 로드리게스(1561~1633년)는 포르투갈 고아출신 선교사로 일본에 파견되었으며 일본어에 능통하여 당시 일본을 방문한 교황청 주교가 지배자이던 풍신수길을 만났을 때 통역을 맡기도 했다. 로드리게스는 그 후 일본에서 금교령이 내려지자 마카오로 퇴거했는데 중국서 우리 사신에게 이러한 서양문물을 기증한 2년 후에 사망했다.

미국 미시간주 출신인 W.칼 루퍼스(1876~1946년)는 1907년 선교사들과 한국에 파견되어 한국땅에 최초로 서양과학을 소개하고 가르친 인물이다. 평양 숭실학교를 거쳐 연희전문학교 교수로 한국에서 10년동안 수학과 천문학을 가르쳤다. 그후 "조선천문학사"를 책으로 발간했고 우리의 국보 천상열차분야지도를 서양에 소개하고 미국 학회잡지에 한국천문도를 발표했다. 그는 연희전문학교의 제자 이원철(1896~1963년)을 한국 첫 천문학박사로 길러낸 장본인이다.

In this study, the views and the meaning of nature between the Western world and East Asia were compared through literature analysis. In the West, it is recognized that nature and human beings are separate. Nature is understood as regular and rational. They, therefore, take the view of particle and mechanical theory. In East Asia, it is thought that nature and humans interact with each other, and take an attitude of compromise and tolerance. Since nature is recognized as an ever-changing being, they, therefore, take the position of wave theory. Scientific knowledge and concepts are accepted depending on the personal view of nature. In Korea, science education follows the view of modern western science without considering the personal pattern of cognition, though students can have various views of nature. The attitude is needed regarding the various viewpoints as rich resources in science and science education.

The In Korea, where multicultural families are increasing, the need to reinforce multicultural competencies has been raised in education. Accordingly, this study selected 7 art textbooks of 2015 revised middle school and analyzed the proportion of the textbook's reference works and contents from the Macfee's perspective of multicultural education. As a result of the analysis, first, the proportion of multicultural reference works by region was high in Korean works(44%) and Western works (43%), whereas that of Eastern works(13%) was very low. In the experience area, 13.8% more Western works were included than Korean works, and Western works were also concentrated in USA and Europe. Second, as a result of analyzing the proportion of multicultural contents, 57.7% of the total units, or 90 units out of 156, contained multicultural contents. As a result, compared to the 2009 revised art textbooks, the 2015 revised middle school art textbooks have expanded the proportion of multiculturalism.
