The results of this study suggest that social entrepreneurship in social enterprises is an important factor affecting organizational performance. Therefore, if managers of social enterprises continue to educate and apply social entrepreneurship to their members, The social and economic performance of social enterprises will increase, which will help to enhance the competitiveness of enterprises. In addition, although the government has implemented various policies to support social enterprises, there is no expectation of government support for organizational performance because of the lack of support from the government after social enterprise certification. • This study investigates the relationship between corporate social responsibility and corporate governance among major US corporations belonging to S&P 500 index during 2000-2008. Specifically, it examines the ways in which firms engage their boards of directors in integrated strategy by establishing a public affairs(PA) or social responsibility(SR) committee at the board level and the effects of this practice on their corporate social performance(CSP). The empirical findings show that negative CSP is the major driver for establishing such a committee, that is, firms suffering from negative CSP as a result of experiencing undesirable social events tend to establish such a committee. On the other hand, such a committee helps the firm increase positive CSP once it is established. In other words, the purpose of establishing such board-level committees is to address problems associated with negative CSP, and once established, they can help enhance positive CSP by enabling the firm to integrate market, non-market, and social responsibility aspects in strategy formulation more effectively. This is evidence that Baron's integrated strategy framework can help firms achieve tangible outcomes.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine social values of self-support enterprises, known as the origin of social economy by using a qualitative research method. Main themes representing social values of self-support enterprises were developed through four sessions of FGI and thematic analysis. First, self-support enterprises embody the value of 'social safety net' by providing workfare for disadvantaged people as well as by operating market-oriented business. Additionally, 'communal spirit', for which self-support enterprises strive, is social value that enables the entirety of self-support enterprises and participants to fulfill non-profit values, reciprocity, and sharing. Lastly, ontological, diachronic, and ecological 'sustainability' of self-support enterprises is a foundational element which creates continuous positive impact on our society. Findings of this study are significant to provide theoretical and empirical evidence for preservation and development of the social economy ecosystem. Based on this, further researches on comprehensive social economy are suggested.

  • This paper aims to examine the characteristics of social enterprises in Jinju City, Korea and to provide policy recommendations for promoting the competitiveness of local social enterprises. There are 11 social enterprises in Jinju City that are certified by central and local governments. The survey shows that the majority of social enterprises in Jinju City are based on the local community and their activities are public in nature, including supporting the self-reliance of local under-privileged class or contributing to local socio-economic development. However, it is also revealed that local social enterprises have a great deal of difficulty in making a profit. Particularly, they have much trouble with sales of their services and products, largely due to the vulnerability of marketing and financial ability. This means that the local social enterprises are not capable of being viable in a severe market competition. Thus I suggest some important policy recommendation for invigorating local social enterprises, including the reform of governance system, expansion of public purchase of the products made by local social enterprises, and the facilitation of inter-organizational networking among local social economy agents.

  • The promotion of social economy is one of the Korean government's top 100 initiatives. As of August 2019, there are 2,249 certified social enterprises in Korea, showing explosive growth with a 41-fold increase from 2007 when the Social Enterprise Promotion Act was first enacted. Currently, the discussion of the sustainability of social-economic organizations is lively, including the issue of changing the certification system to the registration system. Noting the unusual management structure of social enterprise - seeking both social and economic value, this study identifies factors affecting the performance of social enterprises. The study focuses on an empirical investigation of the relationships between characteristics of entrepreneurs' experiences in social economy, strategic competency, the extent to which they seek social value, and their performance. This study is unique in social enterprise research due to its approach to the hybrid management structure of social enterprise with a focus on entrepreneurs' characteristics. Accordingly, this empirical investigation focuses on how social-value seeking mediates the relationships between strategic competency emphasized in typical for-profit enterprises, the characteristics of experiences stressed in social-economic organizations, and the performance of social enterprises. The study findings suggest that, firstly, social entrepreneurs must seek social value as a top priority and improve economic performance using strategic competency to keep pursuing social value, and secondly, social-value seeking must be founded upon entrepreneurs' understanding and experiences in social economy. Practical implications of the study findings include concrete directions for training in social enterprises offered by relevant agencies and the establishment of competency models for current and future entrepreneurs.
