A Study on a Continuing Educational Program for Librarians - Based on Analysis of University Credits (학부 이수교과목 분석을 통한 현장 사서의 계속교육프로그램 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes a continuing educational program for librarian, as to reinforce the professionalism. It researches the previous educational attainments of undergraduates who studied library science. Then it analyses the current continuing programs of the National Library of Korea and librarians' demands for the program. The research also compares ALA and SLA as foreign cases of continuing programs, and their trends observed from the newly opened sessions. This paper, therefore, reports a series of educational contents in library science by their subjects. The proposed curriculum includes subjects including electronic publishing and copyrights, Future of Library, Taxonomy and controlled vocabulary, Patent Information. Science Information Literacy, Open Access Program, The Value of Library, Licensed Issues, Customer Service program etc.

A Study on Introducing Librarian License Examination in Korea (사서 자격시험 제도의 도입 방안에 관한 연구)

  • To meet the higher needs for a new role of libraries in information society, professionalization of librarians who are core human resource of libraries is essential. Under the present circumstance that one can acquire a librarian license if he/she completes the required whole courses only, librarian license system should be improved and innovated. The purposes of this study are to investigate the surveys on librarian license system and the statistics of production and employment of librarians and to suggest a new librarian license examination as a remedy of the present system and a continuing professional education and an examination for license renewal. Based upon the investigation of a case study of the Philippines librarian licensure system, this study suggests some countermeasure which should be considered and discussed for the improvement and innovation of the present librarian licensure system.

제36회 전국도서관대회 열려. 경주 교육문화회관서 3일간

  • 한국도서관협회(회장 이두영)는 9월 24일부터 3일간 경주교육문화회관에서 '전국도서관대회'를 개최했다. 신일희 총장(계명대)은 기조연설을 통해 시대적 사명에 복무했던 도서관의 영광을 재현할 것을 촉구했다. 그는 "도서관이 지식과 정보를 보급하는 것은 인류발전을 위해 수임받은 숭고한 사명"이라며 도서관 대중화를 위한 관계자들의 적극적인 노력을 요망했다. 특별강연과 주제발표, 세미나 등 모두 26편의 강연이 이뤄진 가운데 김포옥 교수가 주제발표한 (공공도서관장의 전문의식과 교육방향)은 앙케트를 바탕으로 도서관의 실질적인 운영자인 도서관장의 '전문가 의식'을 분석해 눈길을 끌었다. 김포옥 교수는 전국 도서관장 329명 중에 설문에 응한 188명의 응답을 바탕으로 근무경위.근무연수.사서교육이수 여부 등을 분석했다. 주목되는 대목은 도서관장의 34%가 사서자격증조차 없는 비전문가라는 점, 도서관장을 전문직으로 평가한 사람이 115명(61.2%)에 불과한 점 등이다. '도서관 일을 특별히 지망하지 않았다.'는 관장이 44%나 되어 애초부터 '전문가 의식'을 기대하는 것이 무리하는 추론도 도출했다. 김교수는 "도서관장의 전문가 의식을 키우기 위해 지속적인 교육과 직업만족도를 높이는 방안을 모색해야 할 것"이라고 주장했다. 제1주제 '도서관 정책' 방향을 모색하는 자리에서 한성택 교수(숭의여대) 등 3인은 21세기에 맞는 우리나라 도서관 정책의 기본 방향을 제고하고 도서관의 유기적 역할을 모색했다. 제2주제 '봉사'에 대해 채윤정 사서(정독도서관) 등 4인은 도서관의 서비스 실태와 향후 방향성을 논했으며, 제3주제 '운영'은 김포옥 교수(전북대) 등 4인이 도서관 운영의 현주소를 각각의 입장에서 조명했다. 마지막 주제는 '학교도서관' 활성화로, 김종성사서(부산대) 등 2인이 도서관과 학교 교육의 연계성, 학교도서관의 발전 전략 방안을 모색했다. 주제발표 논문 가운데 3편을 욕약해 싣는다.

Transforming School Library Materials into Images and Digital Forms (학교도서관의 매체변환에 관한 이론과 실제)

  • The major role of school librarians in Korea has been providing reading guidance and library user education with paper resources. However, digital users have become more ubiquitous and demand more information with the images and digital materials. Therefore, school libraries need to collect more images and digital materials. At the same time, school librarians have to equip themselves with the ability to cope with this transformation. The qualified school librarians not only should have a teaching certificate but also know about techniques to transform various library materials into digital formats. Teachers and students could use these materials for their Web site homepages and Powerpoint presentations.

  • The purpose of this study is to strengthen librarian's capacity by developing curriculum and training system for fostering '(tentative name)Librarians Specialized in Reading Healing' as a field of professional librarians. For this purpose, curriculum and training system for fostering librarians specialized in reading healing are designed and presented through research methods including literature study, case study and 1, 2nd delphi survey. The final curriculum is composed of curriculum for 1st and 2nd grade licensed librarians specialized in reading healing and refresher training based on job description of librarians specialized in reading healing. The training system is based on the first and second level certification granted by completion of the course, thus is designed to meet requirements both for academic achievement and for career development in each grade.

A Study on Perceptions of Public Librarian Jobs (공공도서관 사서 직무에 대한 인식조사 연구)

  • In this study, a survey of public library librarians was conducted to examine the current librarian's job status by conducting a survey on the library's environment, such as the size of books, number of employees, and operating subjects. As a result of the study, it was found that based on the current job content and recognition, librarians are mainly working in the order of operating reading culture programs, planning reading culture programs, and user information services. In addition, it can be seen that librarians highly value the importance of their respective duties, and in the case of labor intensity, more than half of them recognize that the current labor intensity is high. Among the detailed competency units corresponding to each task in the future, more appropriate competency unit elements should be considered in consideration of the essential competency, additional supplementation, and lower factors through this study. In addition, the higher the number and experience of regular workers in the library, the higher the degree of librarian certification, and the higher the current position, the higher the importance, difficulty, and expertise of the current work, so it is expected that the library should continue to build experience in the future.

A Study on the Employment Status and Treatment of Temporary Librarians in the School Libraries (학교도서관 비정규직 사서의 고용실태와 처우개선 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the temporary librarians' employment status that have been placed in over 80% of the school libraries and deduce the issues of their job status for proposing some solutions to improve their job performance. To achieve the above research purposed in this study, the related literature was reviewed and analyzed and an interview was conducted with the librarians in the Chungbuk province and a survey was distributed in the same province. As a result, first, a high correlation was found between the total satisfaction and the factors as follows; 'working satisfaction', 'employment conditions', 'working environment', 'interpersonal relations' etc. In the difference verification based on the satisfaction in accordance with the employment status, a difference of satisfaction was found between the pre and post analyses of the unlimited contractions. Second, the most overall review of the temporary librarians' job performances in relation to the 'reading and lending performances was conducted, regardless of the librarian certification. Third, the temporary librarians working at the school libraries responded that 'the manpower developer' was the most difficult consideration in relation to their employment statuses. And, asked about the solutions for the improvement of their job conditions, most of the librarians wanted their job security.

  • This study intended to support the effective operation of libraries by suggesting measures to resolve the problems of small libraries that experience operational difficulties caused by lack of expertise. To achieve this, the study selected 22 small libraries among the nationwide small libraries by grades, types, and users, and then conducted interviews with their operating staffs. Based on the findings of the study, certain library facilitation measures were suggested, including the provision of incentives for librarian certificate holders, the free distribution of book management programs and their training, regular book supply policies of local governments, differential supports for operation evaluation, the establishment of user service guidelines, and cooperations with public libraries.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the reading events in the public libraries, and to present the development methods on the reading events like these: 1. making the wholly responsible post for reading development, 2. planning various events such as the week for reading, the month for reading every season, 3. planning various events for users of libraries, 4. giving the reading development work to the librarian with the teacher librarian certificate, 5. preparing the multipurpose room like the audio-visual room for the reading development, 6. PR through a cyber space and the like for the reading development, 7. cooperating with the related organizations, 8. increasing the budget for the reading development.

A Study on the Trends of Librarian Recruitment in Korea and Overseas Using Data Mining (데이터 마이닝을 이용한 국내외 사서 채용 동향 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the trends of librarian job recruitment in Korea and overseas. A total of 489 librarian job postings posted on the internet portal site "Saseo e-Ma-eul" were collected for the Korean data, and 6,600 data were collected from "ALAJobList" for the international data. The research period spans from January 2020 to August 2022. The data were subjected to regional distribution analysis, frequency analysis, and topic modeling. As a result of the study, the number of Korean librarian job postings was the highest in Seoul with 280, while California was the state with the highest number of job postings overseas with 662. According to the frequency analysis, the main task of Korean data is 'management' 23.42%, and the core competency is 'certificate' 16.61%. For overseas data, 'Library Service' is the main task of 8.72%, and 'Communication Skills' is the most important core competency of 10.13%. In topic modeling, five topics were identified for each area 4 in total, including Korean and international job description and requirements. The analysis results confirm that the duties and qualifications derived from Korean and international job postings for librarians are related to the core competencies proposed by major library associations such as the American Library Association (ALA) and the Korean Library Association.
