  • This study investigated a 7-week summer science research apprenticeship program for gifted high school students in U.S. The purpose of the study was to examine the reasons why the high school student participated in the program, the students' perceptions on the benefits of the apprenticeship program, and to investigate mentors' perceptions on assessment and mentorship of the students' projects. For this study, laboratory works and group meetings were observed, students' journal and research products were analyzed, and interviews were administrated with student apprentices and some mentors. The result revealed that the main reasons of students' participation were to perform research with university professionals, to understand the scientific research, and to explore their college/career decisions. Students' participation was strongly associated with their internal motivation and interests. The students perceived the benefits of the apprenticeship program as providing them with the experience of the nature of real scientific research, of learning of scientific knowledge on the focus area, and wiser college/career decisions. Students' projects were assessed and guided through on-going interactions and cognitive apprenticeship between mentors and student apprentices.

  • Mentorship as an enrichment program as well as a promising educational method in the 21st century for the gifted students in science provides young scientists with opportunities to develop their abilities and attitudes regarding research. Kyungnam Institute of Gifted Education in Science (KIGES) has run mentorship program for five years. Many advantages of mentorship program for the science gifted students are reviewed including those of KIGES. A mentorship model for future student research programs is proposed as a way to facilitate the process of mentorship.

  • The Research and Education (R&E) program was a year-long, apprenticeship and research-based program that was guided by mentors who are scientists or science teachers. The objective of the R&E program was to help scientifically gifted students in Korea Science Academy (KSA) and Science High Schools (SHS) to enhance abilities in creative thinking, scientific inquiry, problem solving, positive attitude towards scientists, and promoting cooperative research and interests in science and technology. In this study, the impact of the R&E program on the goals of 182 gifted college students in KAIST was evaluated using Likert-type items and multiple-choice method approach that provided a more comprehensive evaluation of the program's impact on science attitudes, creative thinking, scientific inquiry, and interests in science and technology. The results indicated a positive impact on cooperative research, gaining knowledge on the research topic, attitude towards scientists, interest in science and technology, scientific inquiry, and creative thinking in that order. There were rather remarkable and meaningful differences in science inquiry (p<.05), and scientific knowledge (p<.01), between the two groups of KAIST freshmen who came from SHS and KSA in 2006. Implications for science apprenticeship or a research-based mentorship program and their respective evaluations are also discussed.

  • This paper tried to analyze cases of one year team-based project of gifted students who spent two year programs in a math-IT integrated class as part of formative evaluation and extracted the factors associated with future enhancement for the program. The researcher as an advisory professor tried to guide the students as minimally as possible considering their levels of IT skills so that they could self-directedly perform the IT-fused project on a team basis. The data collection included documents, annual report, photos, video, artifacts and interview data with the students for the whole team project carried out between February and December, 2015. The overall pattern of the project activities has been stabilized in the middle of the course compared to the initial stages of brainstorming and design work even though the students revealed the differences of their programming skills and preferences toward the project theme. Their project outcomes were qualitatively analyzed according to the 9 steps of R&E model and has shown individual differences according to low, middle and high level. At the end, the analysis suggested several implications for further improvement of the mentorship program.

  • In this paper we intended to present the case of mentorship program for the gifted in elementary mathematics education, which is related with Waldorf education. We installed the program to four six-grade students during six months. We focused on cultivating integrated perspective, aesthetic perspective and substantial skills. For the aim we dealt with the item, construction based on the aesthetic experiences. Finally we presented three main ideas, construction of regular polygons and flowers, construction of islamic design, and farmland cleanup with construction. We also contained the students' project in this paper.

  • In recent years, parents of students and government have been taking a growing interest in education for the gifted students and there are many research reports about the gifted education. Most of the reports, however, focuses on the conceptional feature of the gifted education program such as organization, operation, management, evaluation, etc,. In other words, there are very few researches on instructional materials for gifted students even though the materials is a critical factor for successful education programs. So, this paper introduces a lecture notes used in a personal education for gifted students to contribute in developing education contents in computer science area. The instructional materials titled as "The Necessity and Application of Matrix in Computer Science" is based on linear equation to usher the students into creative problem recognition and groping for solutions. Also, the instructional materials is useful for students to understand the tight mathematics-computer science relationship and the basic concept of liner algebra.

  • This parer propose a U-dormitory management system based on 13.56MHz RFID system. The proposed U-dormitory management system consists of three parts, the RFID hardware system, the middleware, and the application. RFID hardware system uses 13.56MHz frequency which is suitable for a close range. The middleware is implemented to accept the RFID hardware system values using RS-232c communication method and forward the values to the application. The application is designed to make the DB using the forwarded Haloes, and works based on the DB. The efficacy of the Proposed U-dormitory management system is verified by means of experiments. In the experiments, we set up the system to the dormitory of Daeduk College to show the improvement results of proposed system.

  • This study is intended to empirically investigate determinants of the degree of standardization vs. adaptation in global marketing programs for Korea firms. Our study has two main focuses. First, our study takes a global perspective instead of a binational, i. e., home vs. foreign perspective. Second, we accommodated two conflicting veiws - contingency and resource-based views in explaining determinants of global marketing strategy. As such determinants, we considered global market dynamism and complexity from a contingency view and global marketing assets from a resource-based view. Surveys were conducted with 128 Korean firms engaged in global marketing. Our study found that Korean firms with global assets tend to engage in highly standardized global marketing programs. On the other hand, global market dynamism and complexity did not show statistically significant relationships with the degree of standardization vs. adaptation. The findings suggest that a resource-based view may be more powerful than a contingency view in explaining global marketing strategies of Korean firms.

  • The purpose of this qualitative case study is to investigate differences among two gifted middle school students emerging through the process of algebra word problem solving from the covariational perspective. We collected the data from four middle school students participating in the mentorship program for gifted students of mathematics and found out differences between Junghee and Donghee in solving problems involving varying rates of change. This study focuses on their actions to solve and to generalize the problems situations involving constant and varying rates of change. The results indicate that their covariational reasoning played a significant role in their algebra word problem solving.
