  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal impact of the engagement of private tutoring on student achievement and the influence of the engagement of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring by applying hierarchical linear growth modeling technique on the KELS (Korean Education Longitudinal Study) data. For the analysis, we used KELS data including the score of Mathematics achievement from 2005 to 2007 in order to get useful variables like whether or not to engage private tutoring, weekly time and monthly cost of private tutoring, the experience of gifted education, gender, prior achievement of 6th grade, parents' monthly income, internal motivation and self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 4,435 7th graders from Korean middle schools who were included in the KELS and have the data available to a significant dataset having no missing values include. The result suggest that the private tutoring experience predicted students' high Mathematics achievement and the interaction between grade and private tutoring time and cost has negative impact on the mathematics achievement. In contrast, it was found that the experience of gifted education has negative impact on the growth of mathematics achievement, but positive impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement. In other words, the experience of gifted education shows affirmative impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement indirectly. On the basis of this results, we discussed deeply the effect of private tutoring on the Mathematics achievement and the influence and its meaning of the experience of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the existing studies about the effect on private tutoring and EBS broadcasting which is considered as the alternative which was presented by education authorities. And this study attempts to measure the degree of the effects of private tutoring and EBS engagement on mathematics achievement using various quantitative methodologies. T-test and OLS multiple regression indicates some selection-bias which has positive direction compared to the PSM method closed to experimental design. So, it will be required to consider the methodology which measures the exact effect of institution or participation when we conduct the observational studies.

Secondly, regardless of middle-school students' sex, their self-regulated learning abilities were the highest predictors of English Math achievement. Also, their learning value and parents' monitoring influenced middle-school boys' English Math achievement in order. On the other hand, monthly average private tutoring expenses influenced middle-school girls' English Math achievement. Furthermore there were no moderating effects of parents' monitoring affection, their children's learning value and self-regulated learning abilities between monthly average private tutoring expenses and middle-school boys' and girls' English Math achievement. Finally, based on the results, the importance of parents and Home Economics was suggested in attaining middle-school students' higher academic achievement. • The purposes of this study are to identify how university's entrance examination system is related to private education, and to explore how to improve the university of education entrance system in order to reduce private education costs. For these purposes, 116 teachers of senior students in high school in Daegu and Gyeongbuk and 107 pre-service teachers who had experienced the entrance of the university were surveyed in order to find out the perception of the relationship between admissions elements and private education. As a result, it is possible to concentrate more on school education by strengthening high school grades in the entrance examination. However, there was other opinion that the strengthening high school grades in the university entrance could lead to the further increase in the cost of private education. As there are big differences in the perception of the screening factors between rural areas (Gyeongsangbuk-do) and large cities (Daegu), it is necessary to introduce the entrance examination system considering the characteristics of each region. Third-year teachers in high schools argued that university admissions should reduce the rate of the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) and increase the rate of interviews. The results of this study suggest that the improvement of the university entrance examination system to reduce the cost of private tutoring requires securing fairness of document evaluation, strengthening interviews, and opening interview questions.

  • This study explored pathways from mothers' beliefs to children's subjective well-being through children's private after-school activities and stress levels. A sample of 230 6th grade elementary school students (125 boys and 105 girls) in Seoul completed questionnaires on children's stress and subjective well-being. Their mothers responded to questionnaires on mothers' beliefs and children's private after-school activities. Data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analyses. Our results demonstrated that mothers' beliefs indirectly influenced children's subjective well-being through both children's private after-school activities and stress levels. Neither children's private after-school activities nor children's stress mediated between mothers' beliefs and children's subjective well-being. Mothers' beliefs also had a direct effect on children's subjective well-being. Significantly, both mothers' beliefs and children's stress played crucial roles in improving children's subjective well-being.

  • This study estimated the impact of the shock of housing price increase on the total fertility rate and the contribution of each variable to changes in the TFR. This study is differentiated by estimating the contribution rate of each variable to the fertility rate through the Shapley decomposition and the panel VAR's forecast error variance decomposition, which previous studies have not attempted. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the decline in the TFR in Korea has been strongly influenced by the recent decline in the total fertility rate, and this influence is expected to continue in the future. In the case of housing costs, in the past, housing sales prices had a relatively small contribution to changes in the total fertility rate compared to the jeonse prices, but their influence is expected to increase in the long term in the future. It has been demonstrated that private education expenses other than housing sale price and Jeonse price also acted as a major cause of the decline in the total fertility rate.
