  • This paper presents an arbitrary impedance transformer with unequal split, based on S- to admittance parameter conversion. When compared even/ odd- mode analysis, the parameter conversion design method constitutes a simple design method to include phase delay information and arbitrary port impedances and asymmetrical configurations. To validate this design method, we designed a 50 to $12.5{\Omega}$ impedance transformer with a 3:1 unequal power split, at an operating frequency of 1 GHz. To implement the proposed impedance transformer, the low impedance transmission lines of calculated result are fabricated by the transmission line connected shunt open stub. Good experimental performances were obtained, in full agreement with simulated results.

  • In this paper, hybrid mode beamforming (HMB) which allows simultaneous transmission of joint beamforming and disjoint beamforming is proposed. HMB is proven to be asymptotically optimal beamforming for sum rate growth. Extensive simulations show that HMB achieves nearly the same performance as joint encoding (JE) in symmetric interference channel. It is also shown that it outperforms JE in a more realistic asymmetric interference channel environment, though it still experiences some performance degradation due to power inefficiency of joint beamforming in asymmetric channel.

  • Wide- and flat-gain laser diodes were designed and fabricated from asymmetric multiple quantum well (AMQW) structures which consist of three compressively strained InGaAsP wells of different thicknesses. For a 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-long lasers with as-cleaved facets, -1 ㏈ and -3 ㏈ gain bandwidth were 45 nm and 80 nm, respectively. For this AMQW structure, calculated gain spectra with various line broadening functions were compared with experimental results. We confirmed the calculated gain spectra using an asymmetric line broadening function were in good agreement with the measured data.

  • To analyze the diffraction properties of optical signals by periodic blazed 2D diffraction gratings, Toeplitz dielectric tensor is first defined and formulated by 2D spatial Fourier expansions associated with asymmetric blazed grating profile. The characteristic modes in each layer is then based on eigenvalue problem, and the complete solution is found rigorously in terms of modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) to address the pertinent boundary-value problems. Toeplitz matrix of symmetric and sawtooth profiles is derived from that of asymmetric blazed grating profile, and the diffraction properties for each profile are numerically simulated. The numerical results reveal that the asymmetric and symmetric profiles behave as anti-reflection GMR filter while the sawtooth profile works better as anti-transmission one rather than anti-reflection filter.

  • We propose a wavelength filter based on long-range surface plasmon-polaritons (LR-SPP) supported by a asymmetric doubleelectrode LR-SPP structure. For the case of the asymmetric double-layered LR-SPP waveguide, LR-SPPs exist with a much broader range of index mismatches between core and clad materials. Thus, the asymmetric double-electrode LR-SPP waveguide is adequate to form a plasmonic band-gap device as we report in this paper by studying Bragg-reflection wavelength filter based on it. The structure for wavelength filter operating telecommunications wavelength is designed by using the method of line (MoL) and the transfer matrix method. The fabricated device shows a relatively high extinction ratio of 50 dB with a bandwidth of 2 nm, and the performance is very consistent with numerical simulations.

  • In this paper, we present Beamforming (BF) Training (BFT) for asymmetric links in IEEE 802.11ay. IEEE 802.11ay introduced BFT for asymmetric links that aims to increase the BFT success probability for Station (STA) with insufficient link budget to communicate with an Access Point (AP). BFT for asymmetric links utilizes directional BFT allocation to avoid the usage of quasi-omni pattern at the AP side, and thus to increase STA's BFT success rate. However, there are no publicly available simulation tools supporting IEEE 802.11ay. For these reasons, we present in this paper an implementation of BFT for asymmetric links in ns-3 with its novel techniques such as Training RX (TRN-R) subfield and BFT allocation. We then evaluate by simulation the performance of BFT for asymmetric links.

  • In this paper, forward-wave -3㏈ directional coupler with finite-thickness conductor and asymmetrical coupled lines are designed and experimentally verified using mode-matching based design methodology. Most of studies published in the literatures about the coupled lines are mainly concentrated on the adjustment of coupling amount by changing various geometric configurations. The analysis results in this paper show that thicker metalization requires reduced coupler length in the forward-wave directional coupler composed of asymmetrical coupled lines. Several forward-wave directional -3 ㏈ couplers with finite metalization thickness composed of asymmetrical coupled microstrip lines have been designed in the 5 ㎓ based on proposed design method. The measured data show -4.05㏈∼-4.09㏈ coupling at center frequency which is very closed to design value. The tight coupling has been implemented with accurate design methodology which take mentalization thickness into account.

  • This study presented analytical and numerical solutions for spatial free vibration of nonsymmetric thin-walled circular curved beams. The closed-form solutions were obtained for in-plane free vibration analylsis of monosymmetric curved beams. Likewise, two types of thin-walled curved beam elements were developed using the third and the fifth order Hermitian polynomials. In order to illustrate the accuracy and usefulness of the present method, this study presented analytical and numerical solution and compared these with the results using the ABAQUS's shell elements. In particular, effects of the thickness-curvature as well as the inextensional condition were investigated on the free vibration of curved beams with nonsymmetric sections.

  • Leakage and Bragg condition of optical waveguide with asymmetric rectangular grating profile are evaluated in detail by using novel and rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on eigenvalue problem. The optical waveguide composed by asymmetric rectangular grating occur leaky-wave stop-bands at Bragg conditions, and anomalies based on Rayleigh-Wood condition near Bragg conditions. Furthermore, DFB properties of the guiding structure at Bragg conditions are analyzed by applying longitudinal equivalent transmission-line with characteristic impedance of periodic grating. The numerical results show that filtering characteristics that maximize the reflected power of DFB waveguide are activated near Bragg conditions, in which leaky-wave stop-bands occur.
