  • The purpose of this research is to find the effects of learner-centered instruction based on constructivism (LCIC) on their knowledge generation level and reasoning ability. To look for them, after fraction units are re-planed for implementing LCIC, instructions using it provide students in a class. From the data, some conclusions can be drawn as follows: LCIC has more positive influence of students on recall ability, generation ability, and reasoning ability than tractional instruction method. With the data it can be said that the interaction exists between learners' reasoning ability and generation level.

  • This action research was carried out to help students learn fractions computation by making and using semi-concrete fraction manipulatives that can be used continuously in math classes. For this purpose, the researcher and students made semi-concrete fraction manipulatives and learned how to use these through reviewing the previously learned fraction contents over 4 class sessions. Afterward, through the 14 classes (7 classes for learning to reduce fractions and to a common denominator, 7 classes for adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators) in which the principle inquiry learning model was applied, students actively engaged in learning activities with fraction manipulatives and explored the principles underneath the manipulations of fraction manipulatives. Students could represent various fractions using fraction manipulatives and solve fraction computation problems using them. The achievement evaluation after class found that the students could connect the semi-concrete fraction manipulatives with fraction representation and symbolic formulas. Moreover, the students showed interest and confidence in mathematics through the classes using fraction manipulatives.

  • Since the importance of teacher knowledge in teaching mathematics has been emphasized, there have been many studies exploring the nature or characteristics of such knowledge. However, there has been lack of research on the tools of investigating teacher knowledge. Given this background, this study explored teachers' knowledge of fraction lessons using classroom video analysis. The analyses of this study showed that knowledge of teaching methods was activated better than that of student thinking or mathematical content. Knowledge of fraction operation was activated better than that of fraction concept. The degree by which teacher knowledge was activated depended on the characteristics of the video clips used in the study. This paper raised some issues about teachers' knowledge of fraction lessons and suggested classroom video analysis as an alternative tool to measure teacher knowledge in the Korean context.

  • This study investigated instructional methods for fractional division emphasizing algebraic thinking with sixth graders. Specifically, instructional elements for fractional division emphasizing algebraic thinking were derived from literature reviews, and the fractional division instruction was reorganized on the basis of key elements. The instructional elements were as follows: (a) exploring the relationship between a dividend and a divisor; (b) generalizing and representing solution methods; and (c) justifying solution methods. The instruction was analyzed in terms of how the key elements were implemented in the classroom. This paper focused on the fractional division instruction with problem contexts to calculate the quantity of a dividend corresponding to the divisor 1. The students in the study could explore the relationship between the two quantities that make the divisor 1 with different problem contexts: partitive division, determination of a unit rate, and inverse of multiplication. They also could generalize, represent, and justify the solution methods of dividing the dividend by the numerator of the divisor and multiplying it by the denominator. However, some students who did not explore the relationship between the two quantities and used only the algorithm of fraction division had difficulties in generalizing, representing, and justifying the solution methods. This study would provide detailed and substantive understandings in implementing the fractional division instruction emphasizing algebraic thinking and help promote the follow-up studies related to the instruction of fractional operations emphasizing algebraic thinking.

  • Many students have experienced difficulties due to the discontinuity in instruction between arithmetic and algebra, and in the field of elementary education, algebra is often treated somewhat implicitly. However, algebra must be learned as algebraic thinking in accordance with the developmental stage at the elementary level through the expansion of numerical systems, principles, and thinking. In this study, algebraic thinking-based classes were developed and conducted for 6th graders in elementary school, and the effect on the ability to solve word-problems in fraction division was analyzed. During the 11 instructional sessions, the students generalized the solution by exploring the relationship between the dividend and the divisor, and further explored generalized representations applicable to all cases. The results of the study confirmed that algebraic thinking-based classes have positive effects on their ability to solve fractional division word-problems. In the problem-solving process, algebraic thinking elements such as symbolization, generalization, reasoning, and justification appeared, with students discovering various mathematical ideas and structures, and using them to solve problems Based on the research results, we induced some implications for early algebraic guidance in elementary school mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the influences of learner-centered instruction on learners' achievement and reason ability. In order to accomplish them, the fraction unit and the polygonal unit in the fourth grade were implemented with teaching methods and materials suitable for learner-centered mathematics instruction. Some conclusions could be drawn from the results as follows: First, learner-centered mathematics instruction has a more positive effect on learning of learned knowledge and generating unlearned knowledge in the experimental period than teacher-centered instructions. Second, learner-centered instruction makes an influence of low learning ability on getting achievement positively. Third, as the experimental treatment is repeated, learner-centered instruction has a positive effect on students' reasoning ability. The reasoning ability of students showed a difference in the comparison between the experimental group and the comparative group, and within the experimental group, there was a positive effect of the extension of the positive reasoning ability. Fourth, it can be estimated that the development of students' reasoning ability interchangeably affected their generation test results.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand Preservice elementary teachers' knowledge about multiplication of fractions by focusing on their computation abilities, understanding of meanings, generating appropriate problem contexts and representations. A total of 115 preservice elementary teachers participated in the present study. The results of this study indicated that most of preservice elementary teachers have little difficulty in computing multiplication of fractions for right answers, but they have big difficulty in understanding meanings and generating appropriate problem contexts for multiplication of fractions when the multiplier is not an integer, called 'multiplier effect.' Likewise, the rate of appropriate representations surprisingly decreased for multiplication of fractions when the multiplier is not an integer. The findings also point out that an ability to make problem contexts is highly correlated with representations and meanings. This study implies that teacher education programs need to improve preservice elementary teachers' profound understanding of elementary mathematics in order to fundamentally improve the quality of teaching practices in classrooms.

  • The meanings of division don't change and rather are connected from whole numbers to rational numbers. In this respect, connecting division of natural numbers, division of fractions, and division of decimal numbers could help for students to study division in meaningful ways. Against this background, the units of division of fractions and division of decimal numbers in fifth grade were redesigned in a way for students to connect meanings of division and procedures of division. The results showed that most students were able to understand the division meanings and build correct expressions. In addition, the students were able to make appropriate division situations when given only division expressions. On the other hand, some students had difficulties in understanding division situations with fractions or decimal numbers and tended to use specific procedures without applying diverse principles. This study is expected to suggest implications for how to connect division throughout mathematics in elementary school.
