  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the students' mathematics problem solving process in the intuitive stages. For this, researcher developed the questionnaire which consisted of problems in relation to intuitive and algorithmic problem solving. 73 fifth grade and 66 sixth grade elementary students participated in this study. I got the conclusion as follows: Elementary students' intuitive problem solving ability is very low. The rate of algorithmic problem solving is higher than that of intuitive problem solving in number and operation areas. The rate of intuitive problem solving is higher in figure and measurement areas. Students inclined to solve the problem intuitively in that case there is no clue for algorithmic solution. So, I suggest the development of problems which can be solved in the intuitive stage and the preparation of the methods to experience the insight and intuition.

  • Elementary combinatorial problem may be classified into three different combinatorial models(selection, distribution, partition). The main goal of this research is to determine the effect of type of combinatorial operation and implicit combinatorial model on problem difficulty. We also classified errors in the understanding combinatorial problem into error of order, repetition, permutation with repetition, confusing the type of object and cell, partition. The analysis of variance of answers from 339 students showed the influence of the implicit combinatorial model and types of combinatorial operations. As a result of clinical interviews, we particularly noticed that some students were not able to transfer the definition of combinatorial operation when changing the problem to a different combinatorial model. Moreover, we have analysed textbooks, and we have found that the exercises in these textbooks don't have various types of problems. Therefore when organizing the teaching , it is necessary to pose various types of problems and to emphasize the transition of combinatorial problem into the different models.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how pre-service teachers perceive mathematics problems by making good mathematics problems at the elementary school level and applying them to elementary school students. In this study, 86 pre-service teachers enrolled in the second and third grades of A University of Education presented good mathematics problems they thought of. In addition, these pre-service teachers predicted the solution strategies of elementary school students for the proposed mathematics problem and described the teacher's expertise while observing the problem-solving process of elementary school students. As a result of the study, pre-service teachers preferred mathematical problems needed for using mathematical concepts or algorithms, motivation, and open-ended problems as good mathematics problems, and thought that students' in-depth observation and analysis experiences could help improve teachers' problem-solving expertise. In order to enhance teachers' expertise in solving mathematics problems, the researcher proposed for pre-service teachers to observe students' mathematics problem-solving processes, to experience in developing high-quality mathematics problems, and also to distribute high-quality mathematics problems linked to textbook problems.

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the structural causal relationships among problem drinking of elderly, depression, self-esteem and life satisfaction through structural Equation Modeling and also to investigate how these effects were influenced by the differences in the structural relationships between poor and non-poor elderly. The results showed the positive relationship between problem drinking and depression not also poor elderly group but non-poor elderlys'. According to Multi-group analysis, Latent means analysis where non-poor elderly are used as the reference group, poor elderly group showed higher latent mean values on the problemdrinking and depression, and lower latent mean values on the self-esteem and life satisfaction. Depression mediated the relationships between problem drinking of elderly and life satisfaction the only in a poor elderly group. The implications and limitations of this study were discussed, and the suggestions for further studies were recommended.
