Evaluation method in gait analysis (보행분석 시스템을 이용한 보행평가)

  • This paper suggests the evaluation method of gait analysis in measurements obtained using the "Foot Scanner" and "Foot Analyzer" system. Previous examination method with the unaided eye on the sole of the foot and analysis method of pressure distribution in gait have been discussed by many researchers. Also they have concerned with pressure curve, COP(center of pressure) trace, and velocity in COP. However experiment results depend on test environment and conditions of subjects. Consequently we need to regard the special energy parameter for solving the problem. The kinetic energy and impulse parameter can be used as parameters of gait analysis. The results of this study confirmed the validity of presented of the parameters through the experiment with eight subjects.

  • In Korea, the number of elderly has been increasing rapidly. So it is also expected that the economic activity and the trip frequency of the elderly will increase. On the other hand, elderly related accidents such as falls during walking are steadily increasing and the satisfaction about pedestrian environment of elderly is very low. In this paper, we found one of the reasons for these dissatisfaction in pedestrian facility, which is not considering the walking ability (about 75% of non-elderly person) of the elderly. So, we analyze the kinematic walking characteristics of the elderly with the motion analysis system, when the elderly use stairs. As a result of analysis of various walking variables, the current standard for stairway height in Korean law (18cm) requires excessive force to elderly so it was difficult for elderly to keep the balance of the body in ascending and descending walk of stairs. In this paper, we propose the stair design criteria through the cluster analysis of walking parameters reflecting the gait characteristics of the elderly. This change is not a big for non-elderly person, but it can promote more socioeconomic activities for the elderly.

Development of Pedestrian Signal Timing Models Considering the Characteristics of Land Use and Pedestrians (토지이용 및 보행자 특성을 고려한 보행신호시간 모형 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Currently, the pedestrian signal timing model has no consideration on the characteristics of different land use patterns and pedestrian behaviors during pedestrian signal timing calculation. This study intended to propose pedestrian signal timing models that could reflect the inherent characteristics of pedestrian and land use patterns. For this study, three major variables affecting the length of signal timing were identified: walking speed, perception-reaction time, and density-delay time. Then, the representative values of each variable were estimated through the field studies. By combining this information, several pedestrian signal timing models were developed. The data in this paper can be used for future references, and the walking environments for pedestrians could be improved by applying the models suggested in this paper.

A study on Pedestrian Accident Reconstruction Models: Comparison and Improvement (보행자-차량 충돌사고 재현모형 비교분석 및 개선 연구)

  • This study presents comparison results for pedestrian accident reconstruction models representing the relationship between collision speed and horizontal distance that a body travels while falling and sliding. A set of 49 reliable pedestrian accident cases are applied to compare the existing reconstruction models. In addition, the authors investigate the effects of a set of parameters associated with the effects of the frontal shape of a vehicle on the horizontal distance a pedestrian travels while falling and sliding. It has been revealed that the length of the bumper is the most dominant factor to affect the horizontal distance of pedestrian travel after collision. Further analyses utilizing more accident data need to conducted to develop a more accurate and reliable reconstruction model.

  • This study developed a methodology for estimating the fatality reduction by introducing technical regulation on pedestrian protection in pedestrian-vehicle collisions. Modeling a probabilistic pedestrian fatality model with logistic regression approach was one of keen interests, which employed in estimating the fatality reduction. Collision speed obtained from the accident reconstruction was used in the model development. The effects of fatality reduction, in case various Head Injury Criterion (HIC) and collision speeds are applied for the regulation. were presented as the major outcome of this study. It is expected that the outcome of this study would be an invaluable tool to assist in developing various technologies and policies for pedestrian protection.

A Comparison of Gait Patterns in Young Asian and Caucasian Women (젊은 아시아인과 코카시아 여성의 보행 패턴 비교)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 젊은 아시아인과 코카시아 여성의 보행패턴 중 보폭시간(step time) 과 보폭 (step length)을 비교하고 두 집단의 골반넓이와 보폭과 상관관계가 있는지 알아보는 것이다. 연구대상자는 15명의 아시아인과 15명의 코카시아 여성이었으며 나이는 23세에서 35세 범위에 있었다. 보행분석을 위해서는 GAITRite System을 사용하였으며 분석방법으로는 인종(아시아인대 코카시아인)과 신체부위(좌측, 우측)를 요인으로 하여 반복측정에 의한 분산분석을 하였다. 아시아인 여성보다 코카시아인 여성의 보폭, 다리길이, 골반 넓이가 통계학적으로 유의하게 높았고 왼쪽 다리의 걸음과 오른쪽 다리의 걸음에 있어서는 통계학적으로 유의한 차이가 없었다. 그리고 보폭시간, 속도, 걸음수(cadence)에 있어서도 두 여성 인종간에 통계학적으로 유의한 차이가 없었다. 이러한 결과는 보행변수 중에서 걸음수나 속도와 같은 시간변수에 았어서는 아시아인 여성과 코카시아인 여성간에 차이가 없음을 의미한다.

The Immediate Effects of the Toe Spreader on the Gait of Children With Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy (발가락 벌림 보조기가 양하지 뇌성마비 아동의 보행에 미치는 영향)

  • 본 연구는 발가락 벌림 보조기(toe spreader)가 긴장성 발가락 굽힘 반사(Tonic Toe Flexion Reflex: TTFR)가 있는 양하지 뇌성마비 아동의 보행에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 12명의 TTFR이 있는 양하지 뇌성마비 아동을 대상으로 같은 날에 맨발과 발가락 벌림 보조기를 착용한 상태에서 보행분석을 실시하였다. 시간 거리 보행변수로 활보장(step length), 보장(step length), 보폭(step width), 발가락 외전각도(toe out angle), 활보시간(stride), 입각기(stance phase), 유각기(swing phase), 분속수(cadence), 보행속도(speed)를 측정하였다. 발가락 벌림 보조기 착용 시 시간 거리 보행변수는 통계적으로는 유의한 차이가 없었다(p>.05). 양하지 뇌성마비 아동에서 TTFR을 억제하기 위한 발가락 벌림 보조기의 즉시적인 효과는 유의하지 않다고 볼 수 있으며, 추후연구로 장기간 일상생활에서의 지속적인 착용을 통한 연구가 필요하다고 본다.

Effect Analysis of Media Pole on Pedestrian Satisfaction for Walking -Focused on Media Pole in Gang Nam U-street- (가로변 미디어폴이 보행만족도에 미치는 영향분석 - 서울시 강남 U-street를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of road facilities that have adopted digital media such as total road facility called L.E.D media pole installed on U-street, Gangnam-gu on the pedestrians' satisfaction. Through the study, we would like to improve the brand competitiveness, increase the revisiting decision factors and suggest the fundamental development direction for the digital media road facilities on the typical pedestrian road, Gangnam street. The three factors from the studies came out to be spatial component, design component, and functional component. In order to analyze the factors, the pedestrians' behaviors were observed through a direct survey which provided 35 reserved factors. Also, the preliminary factors derived through survey questionnaires were revised by experts which compressed the result into 20 factors. The result of the regression analisis states that the 'Factor of the spatial component' is the statistically significant factor among the five elicited factors of the effect of the media pole on the pedestrian satisfaction. U-street's media pole provides the comfortable and various contents and application methods and will provide the new perspective on the purpose of pedestrians by new experience that is based on digital technology.

Determination of Key Factors for the Pedestrian LOS Introducing the Accessibility Index (접근성 지표를 도입한 보행로 서비스 수준의 영향요인 규명)

  • A considerable amount of literature has been published on pedestrian LOS. So far, however, there is a limitation that LOS analysis methodologies has concentrated on quantitative variables such as pedestrian flow rate, speed and space. This paper intended to suggest the accessibility variable which can not be considered on previous study. The factor was defined and quantified using public transport attributes in particular. This study was carried out in three phases: 1. defined accessibility employing public mode location and service information. 2. investigated the relationship between accessibility and pedestrian flow rate 3. developed the model to establish the factors affected to pedestrian LOS. The results showed that accessibility, walkway attribute and land use type affected the pedestrian LOS. Especially, accessibility and commercial area ratio had negative relationship with LOS. Futhermore, pedestrian LOS declined when obstacle of bus station located on the walkway. On the contrary, LOS was upgraded when sufficient effective width or residential area was secured. These results can receive considerable critical attentions related to determination of pedestrian LOS or effective walkway width.

Effects of Smart Phone Use on the Gait Parameters When Healthy Young Subjects Negotiated an Obstacle (스마트폰 사용이 정상인의 장애물 보행에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effects of smart phone use while young adults negotiated an obstacle (2 cm high). Seventy-four young adults (mean age: $23.76{\pm}3.17years$, age range: 20-27 years) participated in the study. They were allocated randomly into two groups; smart phone group and no smart phone group. The smart phone group negotiated an obstacle while simultaneously using a smart phone at a self-paced speed whereas the no smart phone group negotiated an obstacle with no special option. A motion analysis system were used to measure the gait parameters, such as toe clearance, cadence, step length, step width, stride length, and walking velocity in two groups. The toe clearance, and step-width, cadence, and step-length were significantly greater for the smart phone group than the no smart phone group (p<.05) and the walking velocity was significantly lower in the smart phone group (p<.05). On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the stride length between the two groups. This study suggests that smart phone use degrades the obstacle avoidance abilities of healthy young adults, which may increase risk of falls.
