  • Newmark's sliding block analysis is the most commonly used method for predicting earthquake-induced permanent displacement of embankment slopes. Additionally, it yields the amount of slip circle sliding using the limit equilibrium theory. Thus, permanent displacement does not occur until the seismic load exceeds the yield acceleration, which induces sliding of the slip circle. The evolution of Newmark's sliding block analysis has been made by introducing the numerical seismic response analysis results since it was introduced. This study compares seismic performance evaluation results for the example enclosure dam section with the analysis methods. As a result, earthquake-induced permanent displacement using Newmark's sliding block analysis did not occur for the enclosure dam, indicating a high safety factor. However, nonlinear response history analysis gave reasonable results.

  • The effect of stabilizing piles on cut slopes is checked and the behavior of slope soil and piles are observed throughout the year by field measurements on the large-scale cut slopes. First of all, the behavior of the slope soil was measured by inclinometers during slope modification. Landslides occurred in this area due to the soil cutting for slope modification. The horizontal deformations of slope soil are gradually increased and rapidly decreased at depth of sliding surface. As the result of measuring deformation, the depth of sliding surface below the ground surface can be known. Based on the measuring the depth of the sliding surface, some earth retention system including stabilizing piles were designed and constructed in this slope. To check the stability of the reinforced slope using stabilizing piles, an instrumentation system was installed. As the result of instrumentation, the maximum deflection of piles is measured at the pile head. It is noted that the piles deform like deflection on a cantilever beam. The maximum bending stress of piles is measured at the soil layer. The pile above the soil layer is subjected to lateral earth pressure due to driving force of the slope, while pile below soil layer is subjected to subgrade reaction against pile deflection. The deflection of piles is increased during cutting slope in front of piles for the construction of soil nailing. As a result of research, the effect and applicability of stabilizing piles in large-scale cut slopes could be confirmed sufficiently.

  • In this paper Power Flow Finite Element Method(PFFEM) has been implemented to analyze the vibration of a plate in mid and high frequency ranges. In order to solve the vibration energy governing equation in Power Flow Analysis(PFA), The Finite Element Method(FEM) was used as a numerical tool. It allowed one to predict the distribution of displacement and Intensity in the plate vibrating at mid and high frequencies. The results were compared with the analytical solutions and the approximate FEM solutions. The comparison showed that PFFEM can be an effective tool to analyze the structural vibration in mid and high frequency ranges.

  • In this paper, influence of shear on the seismic performance and failure mode of reinforced concrete piers subjected to earthquake loading is investigated. Comparative study has been carried out for reinforced concrete column tests to verify the shear-axial interaction model presented in this paper. Comparison shows that predicted shear hysteretic response agrees well with the test results. Also conducted is a nonlinear time-history analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge damaged by the Kobe earthquake using the current development. Displacement response for piers reveals that maximum displacement is considerably increased due to the effect of shear coupled with axial force variation, which leads to overall stiffness degradation and period elongation. It is therefore concluded that the response considering both shear and axial force gives better explanation regarding the seismic damage evaluation of reinforced concrete bridge piers.

  • The imput-output relations for nonlinear systems can be explicitly represented by the Volterra series and they can be characterized by the Volterra kernels. This study is concerned with modeling an elastomer force-displacement relation due to step inputs by utilizing the truncated Volterra series. Since it is practically impossible to apply step inputs that have infinite slope at zero time, the loads due to constant penetration(displacement) rate followed by constant penetration inputs are measured as an alternative approach and estimated for step inputs and then utilized for the truncated Volterra series models. One second order and one third order truncated Volterra series models have been employed to model the force-displacement relation which is one of the prominent properties to characterize the viscoelastic material. The third order truncated Volterra series model has better results, compared with those of the second order truncated Volterra series model.

  • A Monte-Carlo simulation model is developed to predict size distribution produced by the coalescence of air bubbles in turbulent shear f1ow. The simulation consists of generating a population of air bubbles into the initial positions at each time step and tracking them by simulating motions and checking collisions. The radial displacement of air bubbles in the simulation model is produced by numerically solving an advective diffusion equation. Longitudinal displacements are generated from the logarithmic flow velovity distribution and the bubble rise velocity. Collision of air bubbles for each time step is detected by a geometric test using their relative positions at the beginning of the time step and relative displacements during the time step. At the end of the time step, the total number of bubbles, their positions, and sizes are updated. The computer program is coded such that minimum storages for sizes and positions of bubbles are required.

  • The finite element simulations of fatigue crack growth are carried out. Using only the mechanical properties usually obtained from the tensile test as input data, we attempted to predict the fatigue crack growth behavior. The critical crack opening displacement is determined by monitoring the change in displacements at the node close to the crack tip. Crack growth is simulated by debonding the crack tip node. The exponent in the Paris law was determined and compared to the published exponent. Plotting with respect to the effective stress intensity factor range yielded more consistent results.

  • In this thesis, an object tracking method based on the active feature model and the optical flow in stereo images is proposed. We acquired the translation information of object of interest and the features of object by utilizing the geometric information and depth of stereo images. Tracking performance is improved for the occlude object with this information by predicting the movement information of features of the occlude object. Rigid and non-rigid objects are experimented. From the result of experiment, the OOI can be real-time tracked from complicate back ground. Besides, we got the improved result of object tracking in any occlusion state, no matter what it is rigid or non-rigid object.

  • In this work, effects of hyper-elastic rubber material properties on the indentation load-deflection curve and subindenter deformation are first examined via finite element (FE) analyses. An optimal data acquisition spot is selected, which features maximum strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then contrive two normalized functions, which map an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve. From the strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, we can extract the rubber material properties. This new spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties in a manner more effective than the common uniaxial tensile/compression tests. The indentation approach successfully measures the rubber material properties and the corresponding nominal stress-strain curve.
