  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between students' reflective thinking and providing the reading framework in implementation of argument-based inquiry using the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach. Participants of this study were 60 $8^{th}$ grade students (two classes). One class (31 students) was assigned to an experimental group and the other class (29 students) was assigned to a comparative group. For the experimental group, five activities using the reading framework with SWH writing template were implemented, while three activities using the reading framework with the SWH writing template and two SWH activities without the reading framework were implemented for the comparative group. The result of this study showed that there was no significant difference in students' reflective thinking between both groups. However, results indicated that providing the reading framework with SWH approach facilitated students' reflective thinking. Therefore, the findings show that providing the reading framework consistently in the SWH approach was effective when it came to facilitating students' reflective thinking.

  • In this study, we analyzed the co-reflection of pre-service teacher community in three years of post-class discussions (PCD) on the basis of cultural historical activity theory in the case of an biological laboratory class program. We figured out the sociocultural elements of co-reflection of community using activity system suggested by $Engestr{\ddot{o}}m$. We also analyzed the aspect of reflection in terms of both 'the diversity of reflection subjects' and 'the practicality of reflection.' Finally, limitations of co-reflection were sought in a process of continuos circulation of reflection and practice. The results show that the sociocultural factors of 3-year-PCD changed, and in these changes, 'regular PCD,' 'introduction of tools for facilitating reflection,' 'transition of the subject in PCD from researcher to pre-service teachers' are remarkable. And in these process, co-reflection made positive progress since the content of reflection became diverse and practical. However, in some subjects such as 'managing time,' 'participation of students,' 'mentor's role (a kind of teaching manual),' reflective practice have not developed and similar patterns of discussion were repeated. From these results, we suggested ways of facilitating pre-service teacher community's co-reflection from the viewpoint of an activity system.

  • This study aims to investigate reflections of secondary pre-service mathematics teachers and their changes through practicing as assistant teacher in mathematics classrooms. For the purpose of this study, research questions are addressed on the reflections and their changes. During the 2015 Spring semester, secondary pre-service mathematics teachers took a course related to working as assistant teachers in regular mathematics lessons in a middle school. This study selected cases of two pre-service teachers. The data such as reports on their practices and final meeting report with teachers were collected during the semester. The results showed that the secondary pre-service mathematics teachers reflected teachers, students, mathematics contents, and themselves in their reports. In addition, each participant showed different contents of reflections. This difference implied that secondary pre-service mathematics teachers could have different reflections according to the types of lessons that they participated in.

  • This study investigates the science teacher identity of pre-service science teachers (PSTs) in the context of a teaching practice course. Twenty-two PSTs who took the 'Biological Science Lab. for Inquiry Learning' course at the College of Education participated in this study. Artifacts created during the course were collected, and the teaching practices and reflections were recorded and transcribed. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine PSTs, recorded, and transcribed. We found the science teacher identity was not well revealed at the beginning of the course. Authoritative discourse appeared in the early oral reflections of PSTs, indicating that the PSTs perceived oral reflection activities as 'evaluation activities for teaching practice'. This perception shows that pre-service teachers participate in teaching practice courses as students attending a university, performing tasks and receiving evaluations from instructors. After the middle of the course, discourses showing the science teacher identity of the PSTs were observed. In the oral reflection after the middle part, dialogic discourses often arose, showing that the PSTs perceive the oral reflection activities as a 'learning activity for professional development'. In addition, in the second half, discourse appeared to connect and interpret one's experience with the teacher's activity, indicating that the PSTs perceive themselves as teachers at this stage. In addition, the perception of experimental classes was expanded through the course. During the course, the practice of equalizing the authority of the participants, providing a role model for reflection, and experiencing various positions from multiple viewpoints in the class had a positive effect on the formation and continuation of the teacher identity. This study provides implications on the teacher education process for teacher identity formation in PSTs.

  • Mathematics is to reflect on your or other people's psychological mathematic activities. Thus, learners need to reflect on their mathematical activities in order to cultivate mathematical thinking attitude and perceive learning contents. For this study, first of all, two classes of the fifth grade (29 students in experimental group and 31 students in control group) in 'Y' elementary school in Dae-gu city were selected as research targets and post-test of learning achievement and mathematical attitude examination were carried out in order to verify the differences of learning achievement and mathematical attitudes between experimental and control groups. The findings of this study mean that students' learning achievement and mathematical attitudes can be improved by applying mathematical reflective activities to the actual class.

  • This study investigated the change of pre-service elementary teachers' professional visions through video-based reflection on science teaching with focus on their attention and pedagogical reasoning about student learning. Specifically, we compared two reflection cycles before and after pre-service elementary teachers went through the collaborative video-based reflection process in a professional learning community. The primary data were collected from eight pre-service elementary teachers and included their science lesson plans, videotaped lessons, video-reflection papers, and transcripts from the interviews. Pre-service elementary teachers' attention was categorized in five aspects: classroom management & control, teacher's instruction, students' thinking & learning, subject knowledge, and assessment. The level of their pedagogical reasoning about student thinking and learning was determined with six levels based on the number of evidence, evidence area, and evidence type. The findings revealed that 1) individual reflection is not enough - collaborative reflection is essential to change their attention toward students learning and thinking 2) pedagogical reasoning levels increase gradually throughout the individual and collaborative video-based reflection processes. The participants not only attributed student learning solely to the characteristics of students but also connected it with their own instruction or science content knowledge and used different types of evidences as they went through two reflection cycles. Implications for using video in the teacher education program were discussed.
