A Study of Social Worker's Reflective Thinking and the Usage of Practice Skills (사회복지사의 반성적 사고수준과 사회복지실천기술의 활용정도)

  • This study investigated the relation between social worker's reflective thinking levels and the usage of social work practice skills. Dewey definded reflective thinking as active, persistent and careful consideration of any belief. And social work practice skills refer to those purposeful intervention activities, that are intended to alleviate client's distress, enhancing a client's coping abilities. Reflctive thinking levels consists of intensive reflection, reflection, understanding and habit action. The key of social work practice skills can be categorized into three major categories: supportive skills, therapeutic coping skills and case management skills. These categories were designed to apply to a diverse range of client populations. This paper proves that social work's reflective thinking ability and interactions with other workers have an effect on the intervention activities. In conclusion, this research indicates that if social works have a higher reflective thinking levels, they will creat practice siklls and social work practice knowledge.

The Relationship between Mentor Teachers' Mentoring Characteristics and Mentee Teachers' Reflective Practice in Collaborative Mentoring for Beginning Science Teachers (초임 중등 과학교사를 위한 협력적 멘토링에서 나타나는 멘토의 멘토링 특징과 멘티의 반성적 실천 사이의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between mentor teachers' mentoring characteristics and mentee teachers' reflective practices and to investigate mentor teachers' mentoring methods to enhance mentee teachers' reflective practices based on the analysis. The participants were four beginning science teachers and four mentors who have more than seven years of teaching experience. This study compiled mentor and mentee teachers' journals, records and transcripts from mentee teachers' five periods of classes, lesson plans, evaluation forms of lessons, one-on-one mentoring records and transcripts, questionnaires conducted before, during, and after the mentoring program, and a questionnaire about the effects of one-on-one mentoring. The mentoring characteristics of mentor teachers were analyzed based on mentor's interaction methods and the contents and frequency of the support based on teaching feedback. Mentee teachers' reflective thinking was analyzed by being categorized as voluntary self-reflections of their classes and reflections on the support provided by mentor teachers. Mentee teachers' reflective practices were analyzed by utilizing RTOP. The conclusions of this study are as follows: Mentor teachers could promote mentee teachers' reflective practices by eliciting conversation that helped mentees perceive problems in their teaching practices. Mentors' questions evoking mentees' reflective thinking could elicit mentees' spontaneous self-reflection, and it led to the enhancement of self-reflection on mentors' support and reflective practices. When mentors offered the support based on teaching practices while playing a role as a facilitator to help mentees identify and solve problems by themselves, mentees' reflective practices could be promoted.

Conceptual Definition and Types of Reflective Thinking on Science Teaching: Focus on the Pre-service Science Teachers (과학 수업에 대한 반성적 사고의 개념적 정의와 유형: 예비 과학교사를 중심으로)

  • Reflection in teacher education is one reform effort that has taken hold in many teacher preparation programs. However, how to define it and how to foster it in a teacher's education are problematic issues. In this study, on the basis of literature review, science teachers' reflective thinking is defined as a process of thinking that deliberates on alternatives to solve conflict between one's previous knowledge/belief/practice and internal/external factors in science teaching context. Based on this definition, three types of science teachers' reflective thinking (i.e. technical reflection, professional reflection and critical reflection) were proposed. In addition, a framework of classifying the reflective thinking's types was also developed. To investigate science teachers' reflective thinking, two pre-service science teachers who majored in physics education participated in this study. The participants presented the monthly report on reflective practice, pre/post questionnaire, and education practicum journals. Individual interviews with them were conducted before and after their teaching activities. From the analysis of the data, it was possible to categorize the reflective thinking of the participants into three types. The major type of their reflective thinking was the technical reflection. However, it was difficult to find examples of the critical reflection.

Analysis of Reflective Thinking Characteristic of College Students in General Physics Experiment (일반물리학실험에 나타난 대학생의 반성적 사고 특징 분석)

  • This study aims to analyze the characteristics of reflective thoughts of students during experiments in general physics experiments. The participants were 32 college students, they submitted 10 experiment reports including answers to questions for reflective thinking. The results were as follows: First, students show reflective thinking broadly in the experiment, levels were followed by practical reflection, technical reflection, and critical reflection. Also, they actively accepted the knowledge related to experiments, but were passive in connecting new knowledge and experiences obtained through the experiments or forming new questions. Second, the reflective thinking of students show high correlation with experiments related to prior knowledge or the easy-to-understand process. Third, through the qualitative analysis of open-ended questions, it was confirmed that technical reflection occurs in individual evaluation, practical reflection in group evaluation, and practical reflection and critical reflection in improvement proposal. While the students' reflective thinking were superficial or mainly functional, however, they recursively examined the learning contents and the experimental process concurrently.

The Effect of Cooperative Mentoring on Beginning Science Teachers' Reflective Practice (초임 과학교사의 반성적 실천을 위한 협력적 멘토링의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the change in the classes of the beginning science teachers through a cooperative mentoring program that induces the practice of reflective thinking. Participants in this study included three mentor-teachers, two teachers in doctorate or masters courses, one university professor, and three mentee-teachers who had less than four years of teaching experience. We collected data such as video recordings of mentee-teachers' classes and transcription, lesson plans, recording of one-on-one mentoring and transcription, mentor's and mentee's journals, and RTOP class observation reports. RTOP was used for the class analysis, and the cognition and changes in mentee-teachers' classes were determined from their journal entries and one-on-one mentoring interview materials. According to mentee-teachers' recognition of changes in their classes during the mentoring program, they themselves recognized their teacher-centered teaching styles, misconception, and lack of content knowledge. Furthermore, there were changes in the mentee-teachers' classes through their reflective practice and improvement. Based on the result of this study, however, the teachers' reflection was not all accompanied with reflective practice even if the beginner science teachers made some partial changes in reflective practice by reflection. This means that it is hard to instill a reflective practice in mentee-teachers through mentoring in a short period. Therefore, we consider that more systematic and long-term mentoring is necessary for beginner science teachers.

Observation on the Constructing Practical Knowledge of Student Teachers: A Case of Geography Classroom Organization (교육실습생의 실천적 지식 구성에 대한 관찰 - 지리 수업조직을 사례로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand two geography student teachers' experience of practical knowledge on the geography classroom organization during their student teaching. I carried out a qualitative case study on the geography classroom organization and its practice. Data was gathered through participant observation and in-deep interview. The results are as follows: 1) I present portraits two pre-service geography teachers' lives, which represent typical case of intrinsic deep motivation and spontaneous interest in subject matter. 2) Their classroom are organized $9{\sim}14$ segment, its segment organizations in introduction close steps and main lesson step behave differently. The segment activities in close step behave most irregularly. 3) In the reflection rubric, the level of their reflection is middle, mostly concentrated on 'technical' or 'dialogue' level. On the basis of these findings, it can be concluded that a different way of understanding the relationship between knowing to teach and knowing about teaching is necessary.

The Change in Beginning Science Teachers' Reflective Practice in their Teaching Performance through Collaborative Mentoring (협력적 멘토링을 통한 초임 중등과학교사의 교수실행에서 나타나는 반성적 실천의 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the change in the classes of beginning science teachers through the collaborative mentoring program that induce reflective thinking practice. Participants in this study were three mentor-teachers, two teachers in doctor's or master's course, one university professor, and three mentee-teachers who have less than four years of teaching experience. RTOP was used for the analysis of classroom teaching and mentee-teachers' recognition and changes in their classes were found out through journals and one-on-one mentoring interview materials. According to mentee-teachers' recognition and changes in their classes during the mentoring program, they themselves recognized their teacher-centered teaching style, misconception, and lack of content knowledge. Furthermore, there were changes in the mentee-teachers' classroom teaching through their reflective practice and improvement. As a result of this study, the interactions with mentor-teachers through collaborative mentoring program stimulated mentee-teacher's reflections on their teaching. Therefore, these reflections led to their reflective practice that showed progressive changes in their teaching behavioral activities. The extent of these changes varied according to the mentee-teachers' individual disposition toward reflection and the issue of whether mentee-teachers' reflective practice was in accordance with priorities in motivational ZDP or not. Also based on the results of this study, the teachers' reflection was not all accompanied by reflective practice even if the beginning science teachers made some partial changes in reflective practice through reflection. It means that it is hard to lead reflective practice for mentee-teachers through mentoring in a short period of time. Therefore, we consider that a systematic and long-term mentoring program is necessary for beginning science teachers.

Impact of Student Assessment Activities on Reflective Thinking in High School Argument-Based Inquiry (고등학교 논의기반 탐구 과학수업에서 학생 평가활동이 반성적 사고에 미치는 영향)

  • This study focused on the use of student assessment activities to investigate the impact on reflective thinking in Argument-based Inquiry. The participants of the study were 166 10th grade students (six classes). Over one semester, students participated in five ABI programs that we developed. The experimental group (84 students) was taught Argument-Based Inquiry with students' self and peer assessment activities. The comparative group (82 students) was taught without the activities. We analyzed students' reflective writing to investigate how the student assessment activities influenced the students' reflective thinking. We also used the interviews and surveys to examine the validity of student assessment activities. According to analysis of the reflective writing, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean score than the comparative group in the 3rd and 5th writing. The ratio of students who showed a metacognitive level of reflection with regard to analysis of inquiry process, understanding of learning, and change of thinking increased in both groups, but the experimental group's ratio was higher than the comparative group's. The result of analysis of the reflective practice showed that the ratio of the experimental group's students who reached the metacognitive level of reflection in their writing increased, while the comparative group's decreased. Therefore, we conclude that student assessment activities can create a learning environment that facilitates student participation, increases the students' engagement in the learning process, and can be used as a tool to scaffold learning.

Suggestion of the Scientific Argumentation PCK Developmental Model for Preservice Earth Science Teachers through an Instructional Design Program Using Argumentation Structures (논증구조 수업설계 프로그램을 통한 예비 지구과학 교사의 과학논증 PCK 발달 모델 제안)

  • In this study, after applying the argument structure class design program for 20 preservice earth science teachers, we conducted individual in-depth interviews, analyzed the data, and derived a scientific argumentation PCK development model. The scientific argumentation PCK development model consists of three dimensions: Scientific argumentation PCK, PCK ecosystem, and reflective practice. Scientific argumentation PCK is demonstrated in the process of designing or executing classes using argumentation structures as an instructional reasoning tool. PCK ecosystem, consisting of the existing conventional PCK components, is a dimension surrounding the scientific argumentation PCK, and these two dimensions develop by interacting with each other. Reflective practice regulates each dimension and develops it in various ways by mediating the two dimensions of the scientific argumentation PCK and the PCK ecosystem. The conclusions drawn based on the results are as follows: First, preservice science teachers can demonstrate scientific argumentation PCK in the process of design and implementation of lessons using argumentation structures as a pedagogical reasoning tool. Second, it is necessary to develop the PCK for pedagogical reasoning tools such as scientific argumentation PCK in advance for the development of science teachers' PCK, since the scientific argumentation PCK can develop various components of the PCK ecosystem. Finally, it is necessary to use scientific argumentation PCK to support the preservice teacher's reflective practice, seeing that the scientific argumentation PCK promotes the development of PCK ecosystem components by inducing reflective practice.

Exploration Factors Affecting Maintenance of the Effect of Mentoring for Beginning Science Teachers (초임 과학 교사에 대한 멘토링 효과 지속에 영향을 미치는 요인 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that affect the maintenance of the effect of mentoring for beginning science teachers. Mentee teachers for this study were ten mentee teachers who took part in the collaborative mentoring from 2014 to 2018. For this study, the videos of the first and fifth classes submitted during the mentoring program, mentors and mentees' journals, the videos of the classes recorded in 2019, questionnaires about reflection on the mentoring program, and interview materials were collected and analyzed. The result of this study is as follows. First, the reflective thinking was sustained after the mentoring program, and this played a crucial role in maintaining the effects of the mentoring. The group that showed the improvement of RTOP score had reflective thinking and made reflective practice on their teaching. Most participants in the group created the classes of constructivism based on self-reflection on their classes. However, no positive changes in the classes occurred to mentee teachers who couldn't have reflective thinking. Second, reflective practices during the mentoring program exerted a strong influence on the teaching method of mentee teachers. The group of the improvement in RTOP score strived to apply student-centered model of instruction to their classes. It was showed that most mentee teachers in the group kept applying the student-centered model to their classes after the mentoring was completed. These results indicate reflective thinking and reflective practice are crucial factors to the effect of the mentoring and its maintenance.
