In order to analyze the deformational behavior accurately, the in-situ testing technique which provides the reliable deformational characteristics at whole strain ranges, needs to be developed. The pressuremeter is a unique method for assessing directly the in-situ shear modulus of soils with strain amplitude. This paper introduces a new alternative, the cavity strain measuring system in pressuremeter designed for whole strain ranges of $10^{-5}$%∼20%. Not only in the synthetic calibration chamber but also in the field, the pressuremeter tests were performed to determine the compliance of the new developed pressuremeter system. The variation in shear modulus with strain amplitude above $5\times 10^{-2}$% was reliably determined by the developed pressuremeter. It is concluded that the major cause of error in small cavity strain measuring is not from the cavity strain measuring system but from the friction between measuring arm and membrane during unloading-reloading loops.
For geotechnical design in practice, soils are, in general, assumed to behave as a linear elastic or perfect plastic material. More realistic geotechnical design, however, should take into account various factors that affect soil behavior in the field, such as non-linearity of stress-strain response, stress history, and water content. In this study, a series of laboratory tests including triaxial and resonant column tests were peformed with sands of various silt contents, relative densities, stress states, OCR and water contents. This aims at investigating effects of various factors that affect strength and stiffness of sands. From the results in this study, it is found that the effect of OCR is significant for the intermediate stress-strain range from the initial to failure, while it may be ignored for the initial stiffness and peak strength. For the effect of water content, it is observed that the initial elastic modulus decreases with increasing water content at lower confining stress and relative density At higher confining stresses, the effect of water content Is found to become small.
In a nonlinear site response analysis which is performed in time domain, small strain damping is modeled as viscous damping through use of various forms of Rayleigh damping formulations. Small strain damping of soil is known to be independent of the loading frequency, but the viscous damping is greatly influenced by the loading frequency. The type of Rayleigh damping formulation has a pronounced influence on the dependence. This paper performs a series of nonlinear analyses to evaluate the degree of influence of the viscous damping formulation on Korean soil profiles. Analyses highlight the strong influence of the viscous damping formulation for soil profiles exceeding 30 m in thickness, commonly used in simplified Rayleigh damping formulation overestimating energy dissipation at high frequencies due to artificially introduced damping. When using the full Rayleigh damping formulation and carefully selecting the optimum modes, the artificial damping is greatly reduced. Results are further compared to equivalent linear analyses. The equivalent linear analyses can overestimate the peak ground acceleration even for shallow profiles less than 20 m in thickness.
In urban area, many design projects related to geotechnical projects are controlled by serviceability rather than stability requirements. Accordingly, control of ground deformation has become more crucial and many researchers have studied soil stiffness. Recent experimental studies on the stress-strain response of Chicago glacial clays showed that the nonlinearity and anisotropy are the two key factors in evaluating the soil stiffness. In this study, experimental results are applied to analyze the deep excavation site locating in downtown Chicago. The stress paths observed from the observation points located behind and front of the supporting wall yield typical stress paths. Changes in soil stiffness nonlinearity and anisotropy were discussed by comparing experimental and computed stress paths. The stiffness anisotropy were significant even at the first few excavations. The stiffness degradation characteristics are significantly different according to relative location to the support wall even at the same elevation.

In structural health monitoring, the safety of structural members are assessed by the level of stress measured by various strain sensors based on different sensing mechanisms. Since most existing strain sensors used for health monitoring system can cover a relatively small range of structural members, it is very difficult to measure the maximum value of the member subjected to varying amount and types of loads with those point sensors. The reliability of assessed safety of a member may be improved by increasing the number of sensors. It may not be also realistic to increase the number of sensors to overcome these drawbacks. In this paper, a stress measuring method for beam-column members is developed by estimating the maximum stress based on the average strains obtained from long gauge sensor. The average strain from long gage fiber optic sensor is transformed into the maximum strain by multiplication of the modification factor derived in this research.
In the analysis of dynamic problem, determination of mazimun shear modulus is essential for the estimation of shear stress at any strain level. Although many models for silica sands were presented, the direct accomodation of those models to crushable sand would be difficult because of crushability during torsion. In this research dynamic behaviour of tested sand is presented. The shear modulus of loose crushable sand shows similar results to silica sand. However, as the density of crushable sand increases the shear modulus decreases because of crushability by increasing surface contact area. And modulus number is expressed in terms of state parameter by Been and Jefferies (1965).

A series of drained plane strain compression tests was performed on dried samples of dense Toyoura sand and Silver Leighton Buzzard sand prepared by air-pluviation method to find out the deformation and strength characteristics on the value of confining pressure ${\sigma}{_3}^{\prime}({\sigma}{_3}^{\prime}=0.05{\sim}4.0kgf/cm^2)$. The axial and lateral strains measured in this apparatus ranged from $10^{-6}$ up to the failure of the specimen. So the stress-strain characteristics would be investigated from very small to very large strain levels. It was found that the change of the angle of internal friction ${\phi}^{\prime}{_{max}}=arcsin\{({\sigma}{_1}^{\prime}-{\sigma}{_3}^{\prime})/({\sigma}{_1}^{\prime}+{\sigma}{_3}^{\prime})\}_{max}$ with the change of ${\sigma}{_3}^{\prime}$ is very small when ${\sigma}{_3}^{\prime}$ is lower than higher. Furthermore, the effect of confining pressure on stiffness of sands was evaluated. It was also found that for the range of shear strain ${\gamma}$ from $10^{-6}$ to those at peak, the Rowe's stress-dilatancy relation seems to be a good approximation for air-dried Toyoura sand and Silver Leighton Buzzard sand, irrespective of the change of ${\sigma}{_3}^{\prime}$.
In Korea, granite is abundant and occupies around two-thirds of the country's ground. Bven though weathered granite residual soils are widely distributed, undisturbed sampling of this soil is extremely difficult because of the particultate structure. This difficulty has kept away the researchers from investigating !he deformational characteristics of weathered granite residual soil. Thus, a special undisturbed sampling device was developed and undisturbed samples were prepared for triaxial compression (TX), resonant column(RC), and torsional shear (75) tests. Local deformation transducer (LDT) was fabricated for internal strain measurements during TX tests. Both undisturbed samples and statically compacted samples of same density were tested by using TX with LDT, RC, and 75 test equipments. The behaviour of statically compacted specimens was almost the same as that of undisturbed samples in the strain ranges below 1 percent. The stiffness and strength decreased with increasing degree of weathering. In case of undisturbed specimens, strains at failure are widely varied from 2 percent to 11 percent, and planes of failure are irrelevant to the angle of internal friction due to the inhomogeneous nature.
This study is focused on the constitutive model in order to represent brittleness and dilatancy for cohesionless soils. The constitutive model was based on an anisotropic hardening rule derived from generalized isotropic hardening nile, which includes an appropriate hardening equation for the overall strain behavior at small to large strains. The yield surface is a simple cylinder type in stress space and it makes the model practically useful. Hence dilatancy behavior in cohesionless soils could be modeled reasonably. A peak stress ratio was defined in order to model brittle stress-strain relationships. An optimized design methodology was proposed on the basis of real-coded genetic algorithm in order to determine parameters for the proposed model systematically. The material parameters were then determined by that algorithm. In order to verify the proposed model, triaxial tests were performed under $K_0$ conditions far weathered soils. In comparison with the triaxial test results under $K_0$ conditions, the proposed model could calculate appropriately the actual effective stress behavior on brittle stress-strain relationships and dilatancy.
This study compares elastic moduli calculated using two stiffness testing methods with different strain ranges to evaluate the stress-settlement characteristics of foundation support layers. Elastic moduli were calculated by the soil stiffness gauge (SSG) in the micro-strain range and the plate load test (PLT) in the medium strain range. To apply the elastic moduli obtained by the two testing methods with different strain ranges to the design and construction of foundation soils, the correlation between each measurement value should be identified in advance. As a result of the comparative analysis of the elastic moduli calculated using the two methods in weathered soil and rock, which are representative support layers in Korea, the calculated elastic moduli differed depending on the types of soil and stress conditions. For various soil types, the static elastic modulus obtained by the PLT was reduced by 56% because of the difference in the strain level of the test compared with the dynamic elastic modulus obtained by the SSG. Therefore, the results show that it is necessary to apply corrections to the stress distribution, stress level, and dynamic effect according to the ground stiffness to effectively use the SSG instead of the PLT.
