  • This study was carried out in order to identify the error types of statistical graphs for statistical literacy education. We analyze the meaning of using graphs in statistical problem solving, and identify categories, frequencies, and contexts as the components of statistical graphs. Error types of representing categories and frequencies make statistics consumers see incorrect distributions of data by subjective point of view of statistics producers and visual illusion. Error types of providing contexts hinder the interpretation of statistical information by concealing or twisting the contexts of data. Moreover, the findings show that tasks provide standardized frame already for drawing graphs in order to avoid errors and pay attention to the process of drawing the graph rather than statistical literacy for analyzing data. We suggest some implications about statistical literacy education, ethical problems, and knowledge for teaching to be considered when teaching the statistical graph in elementary mathematics classes.

  • This study examined the effects of SSI argumentation program on the preservice biology teachers' decision-making types and communication ability. The SSI argumentation program was developed based on 'Social Decision-Making & Problem-Solving strategy' and Toulmin's argumentation pattern. The preservice teachers had opportunities of SSI argumentation through small group discussions. They were asked to identify the issues regarding SSI, think of solutions, and make a decision along with claims, warrants, data, and rebuttals. The preservice biology teachers experienced four SSI topics of abortion, euthanasia, gene manipulation, artificial intelligence. The results indicated that the preservice biology teachers significantly improved the communication ability after the intervention, but they did not change their types of decision-making. In addition, after the intervention, the Pearson correlation results indicated that 'the logical type' of decision-making significantly relates to the communication ability(p<.01). The preservice biology teachers mentioned that they improved their ability of considering warrants, data, background information, context, and rebuttals. Further, the preserivce biology teachers mentioned that they became take an interest in socioscientific issues and improved their ability of accepting criticism from others as well as caring about others when they argue each other. This study implicated that the SSI argumentation program has effects on improving personality education in school science.

  • Present study investigated the relationship between children's psychiatric disorders and their mothers' psychological problems. Ninety-one psychiatric outpatients from a children's hospital were classified into three diagnostic groups - internalizing symptom group(n=35), externalizing symptom group(n=35), and developmental disorder group(n=21) - based on their psychiatric problems. A normal control group was formed by matching on the age and education of mothers. Mothers' MMPI profiles which were classified into five types - normal, depression, anxiety disorder, somatization disorder, and personality disorder - were examined in relation with children's diagnoses. The profiles of the mothers in the normal control group were mostly normal, while depressive profiles were dominant among those of the clinical groups regardless of the children's diagnoses. Therefore, the data implied association between children's psychiatric problems and their mothers' psychological problems. A possibility of negative reciprocal interactions between children and their mothers was discussed. It was also suggested that further research need to examine the specific effects of children's psychiatric problems on the psychological adjustment of their mothers, as well as the effects of parental psychiatric problems on the adjustment of their offsprings.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest an instructional direction for improving scientific inquiry problem-finding ability of the scientifically-gifted. For this purpose, this study has made an in-depth analysis of the scientific inquiry problems generated by the scientifically-gifted in Problem-Finding Activity in Ill-structured Inquiry Situation (PFAIIS) and Problem-Finding Activity in Well-structured Inquiry Situation (PFAWIS). The results of this study turned out to be as follows: First, most of the problems generated in PFAIIS and PFAWIS could be categorized into seven types (measurement, method, cause, possibility, what, comparison, relationship) according to the inquiry objectives, while the frequency of each type shown in each inquiry objective was a little different. Second, the frequency of scientific concepts stated in inquiry problem was more in PFAWIS than in PFAIIS. But the scientific concepts were shown more diversely in PFAIIS than in PFAWIS. Therefore, results of this study have the following educational implications. First, it is necessary to offer various opportunities of problem-finding activity under ill-structured scientific Inquiry situation. Second, it is needed to emphasize that a new inquiry problem can be found out even during general scientific experiment and frequently to discuss inquiry problems generated during an experiment. Third, it is needed to encourage the scientifically-gifted to generate a scientific inquiry problem based on at least more than seven types.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of mathematics journals of elementary school students and to understand how they change in mathematics journals as the grade goes up, and to obtain implications in mathematics education. To this end, 170 of the 222 parish mathematics data submitted to the "Math Journal Contest" were analyzed with the consent of both minors and their parents. As for the framework for analyzing math journal types, 12 types were derived through independent analysis between three researchers. The research results showed that first, the type of math journal written by elementary school students is a variety of journals, such as observation, problem making, concept organization, and review. In addition, as a learning area, it was found that math journal showed a noticeable increase in experimental observation, problem making, and concept journal as the grades progressed, while a small number of idea journal and explanatory journals appeared. However, game (winning) strategy building and types declined. It can be seen that this is evolving from a type that requires activity-oriented or simple descriptions to a type that actively applies mathematical concepts. As such, there are 12-type of math journals, but it is necessary to actively use the teaching materials in writing that can be freely expressed in the school setting.
