  • Conventional railroad roadbeds constructed with soils can easily deteriorate with time due to the increase of repeated traffic loading, increase of train speed, built-up of ground water on the roadbed and decrease of permeability in the roadbed layer, etc. In this study, performance of reinforced railroad roadbeds with the crushed stones was investigated through the real scale roadbed tests and numerical analysis. It was found that the reinforced roadbed with crushed stone had less elastic and plastic vertical displacement(settlement) than general soil roadbed regardless of the number of loading cycles. It was also found through the actual testing that for the roadbed with the same thickness, the displacement of reinforced roadbed decreases with the increase of subgrade reaction modulus. The settlement of reinforced roadbed with the same subgrade reaction modulus also decreases with the increase of thickness of the reinforced roadbed. However, the subgrade reaction modulus is a more important factor to the total plastic displacement of the track than the thickness of the crushed stone roadbed.

  • In recent years, numerous train derailment accidents caused by deterioration and high speed technology of railways have increased. Guardrails or barriers of railway bridges are installed to restrain and prevent the derailment of the train body level. On the other hand, it can result in a high casualties and secondary damage. Therefore, a Derailment Containment Provision (DCP) within the track at the wheel/bogie level was developed. DCP is designed for rapid installation because it reduces the impact load on the barrier and inertia force on the steep curve to minimize turnover, fall, and trespass on the other side track of the bridge. In this paper, DCP was analyzed using LS-Dyna with a parameter study as the impact loading location and interface contact condition. The contact conditions were analyzed using the Tiebreak contact simulating breakage of material properties and Perfect bond contact assuming fully attached. As a result, the Tiebreak contact behaved similarly with the actual behavior. In addition, the maximum displacement and flexural failure was generated on the interface and DCP center, respectively. The impact analysis was carried out in advance to confirm the DCP design due to the difficulties of performing the actual impact test, and it could change the DCP anchor design as the analysis results.

  • In this paper, a track irregularity according to adjacent deep excavation of railway was analyzed using three-dimensional numerical analysis. The construction for excavation adjacent to the railway track is likely to have a negative impact on train operations. Despite mandatory assessments of the stability and impact on adjacent structures during construction, reports continue to indicate ongoing settlement and track irregularity resulting from construction. Changes in the groundwater level and stress state of the ground due to excavation are pointed out as causes for settlement and track irregularity in structures adjacent to the excavation. In this study, therefore, numerical analysis was conducted taking into account factors that induce track irregularity during adjacent excavation work as variables. The KRL-2012 standard train load was applied to simulate operating trains. As a results, The position of the train load, the distance from the excavation point, had a significant impact on track irregularity, and there was a significant occurrence of track misalignment when the train load was applied. The impact of the groundwater level was not significant.

  • Roadbed failure due to the natural disaster may bring out social and economic damage such as the loss of life and property, the consumption of time and cost for recovery, and the delay of logistics in railway In this study, the method using geosynthetic soilbag was applied to rehabilitation of the railway roadbed which was failed by disaster. The full scale tests with the simulated train loading were performed in order to evaluate the static and dynamic performance at the railway roadbed using geosynthetic soilbag. The results of these tests were compared with unreinforced and reinforced cases with geosynthetic soilbag, respectively The data gathered by various measurement devices from these full scale tests would be useful to evaluate and understand the roadbed with geosynthetic soilbag. In conclusion, geosynthetic soilbag was evaluated as a permanent restoration method to reinforce the roadbed of railway.

  • In order to decide the strength requirement of the window glass for the high-speed train, the pressure change during the passage of the EMU type high-speed train has been numerically simulated. Based on the calculation results, the pressure difference between the inner and outer pressure of the cabin has been calculated to yield the amount of load acting on the window glass of the cabin. To simulate the pressure field generated by the high-speed train passing through the tunnel, computational fluid dynamics based on the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation has been employed. The pressure change inside a train has been calculated using first order difference approximation based on a linear equation between the pressure change ratio inside a train and the pressure difference of inside and outside of the train.

  • In this study, the simulated cyclic train loading test was carried out in order to investigate the dynamic behavior in/at the block type reinforced earth retaining wall. The results in this test were compared with unreinforced and reinforced case, respectively. It was shown that we confirmed the correlation between earth pressure and displacement, the confining effect of wall displacement by the effect of geogrid.

  • Dynamic behaviors of the two-span continuous bridge which is one of prototypes on Gyoung-Bu high-speed railway are analyzed and some methods for reducing the resonance of the bridge are proposed. The bridge is modeled as a two-span continuous beam and the load is a vehicle of TGV-K (2p+18T) with length of 380.15 meter traveling on the railway bridge at some constant velocity. The equations governing the dynamic behaviors of the bridge are partial differential equations produced by using a system with distributed mass and elasticity. The analysis of the governing equations is performed by the mode superposition method which has modal coordinates solved by Duhamel's integral. Without considering the train velocity the dynamic reponses can be greatly reduced at some special lengths of bridge. It is different from the results of simple bridges researched so far. When the dynamic responses increase rapidly to make a resonance phenomenon depending on the train velocities, the several methods are proposed to deduce the resonance.

  • There is risk of derailment due to various factors such as vehicle-track load imbalance in curved parts, so urban railways install and operate derailing prevent guard rails. The angle-type derailing prevent guard rail is composed of various parts including the guard angle. Even if derailment does not occur, various damages occur in the components, so continuous maintenance is required. Through the damage status analysis, the components of the angle-type derailing prevent guard rail with high damage frequency were classified, and conditions for the occurrence of various damages were investigated. In addition, a numerical analysis using a precise 3D numerical model was performed to analyze the cause of the damage analytically. In order to analytically simulate the derailment situation, the static ultimate load condition was applied, and the actual drawing of the angle-type derailing prevent guard rails, rails, and wheels was used for modeling. By analyzing the results of the damage status investigation and finite element analysis, we tried to investigate the damage of the components.

  • In this study, a large-scale laboratory model test and 2-D numerical analysis were conducted to verify the reinforcement effect by utilizing geotextile bag on the railway roadbed. Static loading which simulated train load was applied on the geotextile-reinforced railway roadbed and also unreinforced railway roadbed. Computer program named Pentagon 2-D which is a part of FEM programs was used in the numerical analysis. Based on the results of laboratory test and 2-D numerical analysis, the effect of load distribution and settlement reduction was found to be depending on the geotextile characteristics, tensile strength of geotextile, and interface friction angle between geotextile bags. In general, the result of 2-D numerical analysis shows lower value than that of laboratory test.

  • In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a 12m plate girder railway bridge is analyzed using the commercial FEM program. A time history load is applied to a standard train load via the shape function ofthe beam element. In addition, lateral behavior characteristics were simulated using the Klingel sine movement. A feasibility study of the FEM program and an analysis were performed by comparing the displacement and the acceleration, from the experimental data and the results of the FEM analysis. the time history of the lateral and vertical displacements are reflected in the experimental results. Six kinds of reinforcements were studied from the effects of the displacement and the acceleration. The RF-1 model that was applied to the upper lateral bracing system, and the RF-3 model that reinforced the plate, turned out to be the most effective reinforcement methods with respect to weight limits and construction simplification.
