  • This paper is a study on the implementation of smart filter system that recognizes the external environment and automatically removes pollutants according to pollution level. Recently, the occurrence of various pollutants in indoor and outdoor space has adversely affected the human body. Especially, various fine dust generated in the atmosphere becomes worse in closed residential space or office space. Although air pollution can be temporary lowered through ventilation, it is difficult to respond to fine dust changes in real time, and such problems become serious in the space where many people reside, such as at home or industry. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the pollution level of fine dust inside the residential space in real time and to reduce the pollution of indoor ventilation through automatic ventilation with the outside. To improve these problems, this paper proposes the implementation of smart filter system for external environment recognition. The structure of smart filter system that automatically measures air quality inside and outside, removes pollutants, implements the function, and confirms the operability by manufacturing prototypes. Finally, the effectiveness of the smart filter system for solving fine dust problems was examined.

  • Air pollution problems in Korea are gradually becoming a higher concern due to various reasons such as fine dust, causing anxiety among people with regard to their health. Although various studies have been carried out on the relationship between the influence of fine dust and a certain disease, they are mostly focusing on the analyzation that fine dust is related to specific illnesses such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and diabetes. In this paper, we utilize the public data of medical history information to extract ten medical care subjects with the highest number of monthly care in 2016, and analyze the relation of fine dust with certain medical subjects using Pearson correlation coefficient. We also subdivide and analyze the correlation between fine dust and the medical subjects according to their gender and age. Middle-aged Female group with the strongest positive correlation between fine dust and the medical subjects is analyzed with the correlation from 2011 to 2015, with its relevance coefficient extracted by regression analysis in order to predict the correlation with the medical subjects according to the fine dust concentration.

  • Concerns on the air pollution problem caused by ambient fine particles have become a big social issue in Korea. Important factors that should be addressed to develop effective and efficient air quality management policy, especially, against fine particles are discussed and research and policy directions to address these factors are suggested. It is suggested that two factors are in high priority; one is scientific understanding of the major formation mechanisms of fine particles and the other is the process of policy decision and implementation. For the scientific understanding, smog chamber measurement, intensive field study, and chemical transport model development that can simulate the characteristics of Northeast Asia are considered to be important. For the policy directions, priority setting of the proposed policies and development and implement of effective communication sytem are considered to be important.

  • International organizations such as the World Health Organization, the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation, and major developed countries recognize the seriousness of air pollution. International organizations such as the International Maritime Organization have also implemented various regulations to reduce air pollution from ships. In line with this international trend, the government has also enacted a special law on improving air quality in port areas, and is making efforts to reduce air pollution caused by ports. The purpose of the Special Act is to implement comprehensive policies to improve air quality in port areas. This study sought to identify the emissions of each source of air pollutants originating from the port and prepare basic data on setting the policy priorities. To this end, the analysis was conducted in six categories: ships, vehicles, loading and unloading equipment, railways, unloading/wild ash dust, road ash dust, and the methodology presented by the European Environment Agency(EEA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency(EPA). The pollutants subject to analysis were analyzed for carbon monoxide(CO), nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulfur oxides(SOX), total airborne materials(TSP), particulate matter(PM10, PM2.5), and ammonia(NH3). The analysis showed a total of 7,122 tons of emissions. By substance, NOX accounted for the largest portion of 5,084 tons, followed by CO (984 tons), SOX (530 tons), and TSP (335 tons). By source of emissions, ships accounted for the largest portion with 4,107 tons, followed by vehicles with 2,622 tons, showing high emissions. This proved to be the main cause of port air pollution, with 57.6% and 36.8% of total emissions, respectively, suggesting the need for countermeasures against these sources.

  • Micro dust is closely related to real life. Especially, the micro dust forecasting system is being implemented from February 2014. Reliability of data through air pollution monitoring network is important. The Ministry of Environment operates 506 air pollution monitoring networks (11 types) to analyze national air quality and establish air policies. However, there is not enough system to confirm and check the site suitability of the measurement site. Therefore, this study analyzes urban space using GIS. Assess the appropriateness and equity of air pollution measurement facilities. The final goal is to reflect the results of the analysis into the Seoul Metropolitan Air Pollution Monitoring Network Installation Plan.

  • To sustainably monitor air pollution in Seoul, the number of Air Pollution Monitoring Station has been gradually increased by Korea's Ministry of Environment. Although particulate matters(PM), one of the pollutants measured at the stations, have an significant influence on human body, the concentration of PM in Korea came in second among 35 OECD member countries. In this study, using the data of PM concentration from the stations, distribution maps of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations over Seoul were generated, and spatial factors potentially related to PM distribution were investigated. Based on a circumscribed hexagon about a circle in radius of 500 meters created as a basic unit, Seoul was sectionalized and PM concentration map was generated using the interpolation technique of 'inverse distance weighting'. The distributions of PM concentrations were investigated with commuting time by administrative district and the outcome was related with land-use type and volume of traffic. Results from this analysis indicated distribution pattern of PM10 concentration was different from that of PM2.5 by administrative district and time. The distribution of PM concentration was strongly related to not only the size of business and trafficked areas among the land-use type, but also the existence of urban green. Further analysis of the relationship between the PM concentration and detailed land-use and urban green maps can be helpful to identify spatial factors which have an impact on the PM concentration on the regional scale.

  • Donghae Port is adjacently located to a residential area wherein 26,933 generations are creating a living environment. The areas comprise Song-jeong village (5,754 generations) and Bukp-yeong village (21,179 generations). Major cargoes handled in Donghae Port are dusty limestone, cement, anthracite, and bituminous coal, etc. In the process of handling such cargoes, air pollutants including oxide dust and fine dust which adversely impact the living conditions and health of residents are generated, causing air pollution in the vicinity of the port. Currently, Donghae Port is making an effort to improve the operation environment of the infrastructure and equipment in stages, for the purpose of reducing air pollutant emissions caused by the port industries in a long-term perspective. In this study, the sphere of influence of fine dust exposure and the degree of air pollution in the surrounding area were analyzed such as the state of fine dust concentration and diffusion in the vicinity of Donghae Port, fine dust diffusion pattern and spatial distribution of high-concentration considering wind direction and speed characteristics during the day and seasonal cycles. A more effective plan to reduce the concentration of fine dust in nearby areas by combining reduction plan, is being developed in terms of improvement regarding port infrastructure and equipment, and reduction measures considering the characteristics of the atmosphere environment according to the daytime, nighttime and season.

  • The Japanese government's attempts to reduce fine particles (PM2.5) emission pollution in Japan have been largely ineffective. This is because PM2.5 in Japan originated from various sources including around half from oversea countries such as China. This prompts the Japanese government to start a new initiative to reduce PM2.5 at its origin by transferring local knowledge on air pollution reduction measures and technologies to China and working closely with the Chinese government. To promote further reduction in PM2.5, bilateral corporation between Japan and China should be extended to include Korea. It is recommended that an international convention should be in place to deal with transboundary air pollutants in East Asia. A successful East Asia corporation to reduce PM2.5 will not only contribute to clean air but also to future sustainable low carbon society in this region.
