  • This paper is to consider conceptually a formation of food-networks and border-crossing of transnational marriage migrant households on the basis of actor-network theory, and to analyze empirical data on the issues collected by interview with marriage migrant women living around Daegu, S.Korea. Some research results can be argued as follows: First, food can be seen, not as a single material object, but as a multiple and hybrid network of human and nonhuman (material and institutional) actors, in which activities of food cooking and eating are regulated by and (re)construct social relations and placeness of households. Secondly, food-networks in marriage migrant households implement relationships of micro-power (and attachment) in the process of its (re)formation, and hence the food-network, it can be argued, is a field of power in which conflicts and compromising around food cooking and eating are intersecting each others. Thirdly, food-networks in marriage migrant households in both their origin country and in the Korean home are not only affected by macro natural and social environments but also by micro placeness of the households, both of which constitute the food-networks and operate in relations with other actors in the netwroks. Finally, food-networks in marriage migrant households reflect multiple and multi-scalar spatial mobility and placeness of transnational food culture, through which they express topologically 'fluid space' and 'absent presence', in which marriage migrant women can (or cannot) conduct social and cultural border-crossing.

  • In order to develop the deep ocean water, the characteristics of vertical distribution of dissolved trace metals(Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) were investigated from Apr. to Oct., 2005 in the East Sea. Total six sampling sites were selected in Gangwon-Do and Gyeongsangbuk-Do. Accuracy of the analytical procedures was assessed by the SRM(CASS-4) for dissolved metals in seawater. The mean recoveries cf CASS-4 ranged from 89.4% for Co to 99.8% for Cd. In this study, the dissolved metal concentrations varied with space, time and element. The metal concentrations showed wide range in the surface. Cd, Ni and Zn showed a nutrient-type profile with surface depletion and enrichment at depths. However, Co, Cu and Pb were irregular in the vertical distribution. All metal concentrations studied in this study are lower than the criteria cf Korean drinking water.

  • Phthalate esters is recently considered as an environmental pollutant. This study investigated removal methods of phthalate esters in water environment. On tap water treatment condition with batch test, removal efficiency of coagulation precipitation of one oxidation were $26.6{\sim}33.8%$ and $10{\sim}15%$, respectively. Phthalate esters was effectively removed by the activated carbon adsorption process on tap water treatment condition. The operation of raw water with EBCT of 10 minutes on continuous process satisfied the standard of drinking water by the WHO and US EPA when the concentration of phthalate esters was $100\;{\mu}g/L$. On pilot plant test, coagulation precipitation process got $32{\sim}44%$ of removal efficiency, sand filtration process $6{\sim}10%$ and ozone oxidation process $8{\sim}10%$, respectively. DEP, DBP, BBP and DEHP were not detected after the raw water was processed with activated carbon. The actual survey of phthalate esters removal by advanced water treatment showed that $29{\sim}76%$, $3{\sim}29%$ and $17{\sim}22%$ of phthalate esters were removed on coagulation precipitation process, sand filtration and ozone oxidation process, respectively. DEP, DBP, BBP and DEHP were not detected after the raw water was processed with activated carbon.

  • Concentrations of formaldehyde and acetaldehy de were respectively analysed in forty-five alcoholic beverages obtained from the market. After derivatization with PFBHA, GC-ECD and GC-MSD were employed for analysis. The peak area of aldehyde oximes (derivatives with PFBHA) increased with the increasing ethanol content (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 40%). When three-point calibration corves for the selected ethanol concentration (5, 13, 21 and 40%, v/v) were studied, suitable linearity against ethanol concentration was observed only under 5, 13, and 21% (ethanol, v/v). After analysis, maximum content of formaldehyde (average of 0.272 ppm) and acetaldehyde (average of 15.262 ppm) among the observed 45 alcoholic beverages was found from whisk (2 species) while minimum content of formaldehyde (average of 0.009 ppm) and acetaldehyde (average of 0.805 ppm) was found from diluted soju (4 species).

  • To investigate the effect of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer extract (Ginseol K-b1), on skin functionality, we evaluated skin appearance and properties, such as wrinkle formation, skin moisture content, and skin elasticity in the skin of hairless mice damaged by UV irradiation. In addition, the effect of Ginseol K-b1 on collagen synthesis in human dermal fibroblasts was investigated. Female hairless mice were orally administered Ginseol K-b1 for 10 weeks with UV irradiation. Wrinkle formation in the Ginseol K-b1-treated group was significantly suppressed compared to the UV-irradiated group. Skin properties, including skin moisture content and elasticity, of the Ginseol K-b1-treated group were better than those of the control group. In the human fibroblast cells, Ginseol K-b1 treatment enhanced cell proliferation and significantly stimulated collagen synthesis. These results suggest that Ginseol K-b1 is a potent ingredient with anti-aging effects.

  • The root of Playtcodon grandiflorum, called Platycodi radix, has been a favorite edible plant in Asia and contains a large amount of saponins. Melanoma cells (B16F10) were used to investigate the inhibitory effect of aged black Platycodi radix extract (ABPRE) on oxidative stress and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Platycodon radix has been known to have a variety of medicinal effects such as prevention of gastric ulcers, antiallergenic activities, histamine release inhibition, and antioxidant effects. However, the mechanism of its action remains unclear in humans. ABPRE was prepared using ethanol extraction of aged black Platycodi radix. In an antioxidant effect study of ABPRE, it was observed that ABPRE specifically exhibited the scavenging activity of DPPH radical, but did not inhibit the production of malondialdehyde from lipid peroxidation. DNA oxidation was also blocked in the presence of ABPRE. In addition, ABPRE decreased the expression and activation of MMP-2 stimulated by phenazine methosulfate. Furthermore, ABPRE revealed the inhibitory effect on melanin production induced by L-dopa via antioxidant effect and the reduction of tyrosinase expression. Especially, the expression of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD-1 and SOD-2 regulated by Nrf2 was increased in the presence of ABPRE. Therefore, it appears that ABPRE may be a possible chemopreventive agent for the prevention of metastasis related to oxidative stress.

  • In this study, we collected the tap water that treated from water plant in Seoul, Incheon, Taejon, Kwangju, Taeku and Pusan and supplied each house. The sampling period was June and September, 1997. The concentration of THMs formed by chlorination in drinking water was determined with the purge and trap method with GC/MSD recommended by the us EPA 542.2 method. Chloroform is the most of THMs (47.43%~93.11%) and the content order is bromodichloromethane > chlorodibromomethane > bromoform. In Incheon, Taejon, Kwangju, Taeku and Pusan, the content of bromodichloromethane, chlorodibromomethane and bromoform was higher than Seoul. But, in June and September, the concentration of THMs in six cities is not over Korea Drinking Water Regulation $100{\mu}g/L$. The calculated human exposure for each substances were chloroform $6.14{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$, bromodichloromethane $1.01{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$, chlorodibromomethane $0.29{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$, bromoform $0.01{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$ and THMs $7.98{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$.

  • Inorganic nitrogens resulting from fertilizers are possible contaminants of bank-filtered ground water, which is an alternative source of safe drinking water. We conducted a laboratory study to determine the fate of inorganic nitrogens in the near field of bank filtration sites and we consequently illustrated the effects of these possible contaminants on the water quailty of bank filtration. Soil properties were found to be well equivalent to those of other cultivated field soils in Korea. Surface soil pH was about 4.3 which is slightly lower than average level. Overall, diverse concentrations of $NO_3$-N and $NH_3$-N were measured, and $NO_2$-N was nearly undetected. $NH_3$-N level in the field decreased, while $NO_3$-N increased along with increasing depth of unsaturated zone. Numbers of viable and nitrifying bacteria ranged from 6.73$\times$$10^{6}$to 10.7$\times$$10^{6}$ and 0.44$\times$$10^{4}$ to 5.21$\times$$10^{4}$ respectively, and both of them were highly correlated ($R^{2}$=0.992). Nitrifying potential assayed by batch test showed relatively lower than other reported results. The oxygen uptake potential of surface and subsurface soil was measured in the presence of ${(NH_4)_2}$$SO_4$. The results demonstrated that surface soil required shorter lag period and uptaked more oxygen than subsurface's.

  • Water quality standards (WQS) are mandatory to guarantee the human health and protection of aquatic ecosystems, and maintain the condition of suitable water quality. The present WQS for the protection of human health in Korea contain nine substances (As, Cd, $Cr^{6+}$, CN, Pb, Hg, ABS, organophosphorus compounds and PCBs), but it is insufficient to preserve the human and aquatic ecosystem from a variety of chemicals. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the substance of WQS for the protection of human health. In this study, we chose the 20 chemicals from 43 chemicals of the project entitled 'Development of Integrated Methodology for Evaluation of Water Environment'. The methodology for calculating water quality criteria was amended from the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)'s equation for deriving ambient water quality criteria for the protection of human health. The factors including fish intake, drinking water intake, and human body weight used in the equation reflected Korean situations. The monitoring values were derived from the water quality monitoring data in Korean four main rivers. The orders of priorities of chemicals were evaluated by human health risk assessment, and the proposed WQS was derived by technical and economic analyses. These results were reflected to expand the WQS for the protection of human health.

  • Citarum river in West Java, Indonesia plays strategic roles for Jakarta metropolitan areas. Besides it provides major source of water supply such as domestics and drinking water including Jakarta, it also provides water for hundreds of industries through its cascade reservoirs. However, recently, Citarum river basin has been seriously suffering from water and groundwater pollution as well as the lowering-down of groundwater level due to the extreme use of water resources in dry season by domestic and industrial activities. This project objectives are design and installation of industrial wastewater treatment/recycle facilities to overcome the problem of water pollution and the lowering-down of groundwater level in Bandung. For these, cyclone type dissolved air flotation (DAF), CYFLOAT, was successfully installed as the appropriate technology for the target textile industry with 100 ton/day of capacity. The CYFLOAT system can remove the 96.8% of particulates, which are known as a critical factor to recycle the wastewater, within 40 min of residence time. Furthermore, The CYFLOAT system can reduce the operational cost and land use. The project was carried out in strong partnership with local institute including UNPAR, IBT, and PUSKIM for the sustainability of the technology to textile industry complex in Indonesia.
