  • The mechanical floating-mass which is analogous to an electrical floating- capacitance may not come across because a mass element in a mechanical network must be attracted to rho ground which is the reference point. In this study the mechanical floating-mass is fonstructed by employing two simple support levers, one link, one mass, and four frictionless hearings. It also shows that the mechanical device can be used to give various equivalent masses by altering the arm ratio of the levers.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the equivalent energy of a 6MV X-ray beam in the experiment. The half-value layer (HVL) of lead for the 6 MV X-ray beam was measured using an ionization chamber. The linear attenuation coefficients were calculated with HVL. And, the mass attenuation coefficient was obtained by dividing the linear attenuation coefficient by the density of lead. The equivalent energy of mass attenuation coefficient was determined using the photon energy versus mass attenuation coefficient data of lead given by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In conclusion, the equivalent energy of the 6 MV X-ray beam was determined to be 1.61 MeV. This equivalent energy was determined to be about 30% lower than reported by Reft. The reason is presumed to be due to the presence of an air cavity between the lead attenuators.

  • The natural frequency of a beam plays a critical role in the dynamic analysis of beams. Especially it is a complicated and difficult task to analyse the natural frequency of a stepped beam with an irregularly varying section. The lumped mass methods, multi-degree of freedom analyses, are mainly used for the analysis of this kind of stepped beams. The accuracy of these methods are determined by the number of the partitions of elements, the number of the iterations in calculation, and the accuracy of assumed mode shapes. This study presents a method of transformation from symmetrically stepped beams to an equivalent beam and a method of the eigenvalue analysis. Appropriateness and utility of this method are demonstrated by comparing examples from other literatures and various models.

  • In this study, as part of the development of an autonomous flying personal aircraft, an equivalent model of the main wing assembly of an Optionally Piloted Personal Air Vehicle (OPPAV) was developed. Reliability of the developed equivalent model was verified by eigenvalue analysis. The main wing assembly consisted of a main wing, an inboard pod, and an outboard pod. First, for developing an equivalent model of each component, components to produce the equivalent model were divided into several sections. Nodes were then created on the axis of the equivalent model at both ends of each section. In addition, static analysis with unit force and unit moment was performed to calculate the deformation or the amount of rotation at the node to be used in the equivalent model. Equivalent axial, bending, and torsional stiffness of each section were calculated by applying the beam theory. Once the equivalent stiffness of each section was calculated, information of a mass and moment of inertia for each section was entered by creating a lumped mass in the center of each section. An equivalent model was developed using beam element. Finally, the reliability of the developed equivalent model was verified by comparison with results of mode analysis of the fine model.

  • In this work, a method of size optimization is proposed to maximize the natural frequency of a rod that consists of a hidden shape in one part and an exposed shape in the other. The frequency response function of a rod composed of two parts is predicted by using the frequency response functions of each of the parts instead of the shapes of the parts. The mass and stiffness matrices of the rod are obtained by using the mass and stiffness matrices of the equivalent vibration systems, which are obtained by applying the experimental modal analysis method to the frequency response functions of the parts. Through several numerical examples, the frequency response function obtained by using the proposed method is compared with that of a rod to validate the prediction method based on equivalent vibration systems. A size optimization problem is formulated for maximizing the first natural frequency of a combined rod, which is replaced with an equivalent vibration system, and a rod structure is optimized by using an optimization algorithm.

  • In this stury, control performance of tuned mass damper (TMD) with torsional rigidity for an eccentric structure showing torsional responses is investigated. To this end, an eccentric structure subjected to earthquake excitation is used to evaluate the control performance of torsional TMD by varying installed location and torsional rigidity of TMD, To reduce computational time required for repetitive time history analysis of an example structure having non-proportional damping system due to TMD, an equivalent analytical model is used in this study. Torsional properties of TMD usually neglected in typical TMD are verified to be effective in reduction of torsional responses of the eccentric structure. In the case of eccentric structures, it has been seen that the center of a plane of a structure may not be optimal location of TMD.

  • The simplest vibrtion absorber is the impact damper which consists of a small mass allowed to impact between two gaps sp that energy is dissipated by conversion into noise and heat. Impact damping is a passive vibration control technique to attenuate the vibrations of lightly damped. It has been investigated to reduce the excessive vibrations of turbin blades, radar antennas, machine tools and tall light poles. In this paper, the efficiency of impact vibration absorber was investigated. A steady state vibration of two equispaced impacts per cycle was assumed. The analysis based on the assumption has been considered and the theory is examined experimentally.

  • This paper presents the construction of consistent coefficient matrix elements for jointed structures using the reduction of flexibility and mass matrices. The reduced flexibility coefficient matrix hat little structural complexity than Guyan's stiffness matrix reduction since the only element of the original matrix, corresponding to the selected nodal degrees of freedom, contributes. The proposed method was applied to building equivalent coefficient matrices for a clamp jointed structure in finite element modal analysis of a cantilevered beam. The theoretical analysis results were compared with those experimental modal analysis, Comparison of both shows good agreement each other.

  • The fragility analyses for the partially filled horizontal cylindrical tank having a flexible wall were conducted to evaluate seismic performance. An equivalent simplified model with two lumped masses representing to impulsive and convective masses was used to represent the liquid storage system. This simplified model was validated by comparing its time history analysis results with the 3D FSI model results. The horizontal tank was analyzed under bi-directional excitations. Seismic fragility curves for the stability were developed in transverse and longitudinal directions. Fragility curves show that seismic damage for the horizontal storage system is more susceptible in the transverse direction.
