Effects of Auricular Acupressure on Headache and Its Impact on Daily Activities of Nurses (귀 지압이 간호사의 두통과 일상생활 두통 영향에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of auricular acupressure on headaches and its impact on daily activities in nurses. Methods: The design of this study was a randomized controlled trial. Data were collected from April 1 to April 14, 2022. Nurses suffering from headaches were recruited from a hospital in a city. Twenty nurses were assigned to the experimental group and 20 nurses to the control group. The experimental group received auricular acupressure for 2 weeks, and the control group was put on the waiting list. Results: Auricular acupressure reduced headache over 2 weeks compared to the control group. Auricular acupressure reduced the effect of headache on daily activities compared to control group. Headache effect on daily activities in the control group did not change. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is suggested to repeat the study using various combinations of acupressure points other than the acupressure points used in this study or to use participants other than nurses.

Effect of a Spiritual Care Empowerment Program on Psychological Empowerment of Nursing Students (영적 간호임파워먼트 프로그램이 간호대학생의 심리적 임파워먼트에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to test the effects of a spiritual care empowerment (SCE) program on the psychological empowerment for nursing students. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The participants were 80 nursing students (41 in the experimental and 39 in the control group) recruited from the D and S universities. The SCE program used in this study was developed based on the Zimmerman's Psychological Empowerment Model. The experimental group attended 9 sessions of a SCE program. Sessions were 90 minutes each, held twice per week for 5 weeks. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, and t-test using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Intrapersonal (self esteem and existential well-being), interactional (empathy), and behavioral (spiritual care competence) components were significantly improved in the experimental group after the intervention compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results show that the SCE program could be effective in improving the psychological empowerment of nursing students. Accordingly, the SCE program would be applied to the nursing curriculum that enhances students' psychological empowerment.

In-home Use of Complementary Alternative Medicine by Stroke Patients (재가 뇌졸중환자의 보완대체요법 이용실태)

  • Purpose: The study was conducted to ascertain the use of the complementary alternative medicine (CAM) in stroke patients, in order to provide the appropriate CAM information to patients recovering from stoke. Methods: Subjects were 201 stroke patients who were randomly selected from a health care center and a welfare center. Data from a self-administered questionnaire collected from February to April 2009 was analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: Subjects averaged 67.4-yr-of-age. Of the 201 subjects, 69.2% had used CAM. CAM use was statistically significant in diagnosis, duration of post stroke, paralysis, and education about CAM. CAM was used in the mid-portion of treatment by 47.3% of the subjects, and 41.7% used it for more than a year. Of those using CAM, 52.7% of the subjects responded that their reason was the belief in the treatment's beneficial effects. Of the subjects 89.2% reported most frequent use of oriental medicine. Conclusions: The majority of stroke patients surveyed frequently and continuously used CAM in their mid-period of treatment expecting positive effects.

The Effect of Virtual Reality-Based Anatomy Education Program on Learning Presence, Technology Acceptance, Learning Motivation, and Knowledge for Nursing Students (가상현실(Virtual Reality) 기반 해부학 교육 프로그램이 간호대학생의 학습실재감, 기술수용성, 학습동기 및 해부학 지식에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of virtual reality (VR) based anatomy education program on nursing students' learning presence, technology acceptance, learning motivation, and knowledge. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pre-test and post-test design was employed. The study participants included 113 nursing students (56 in the experimental group and 57 in the control group) from Ansan City. Data collection was conducted from June 1 through 23. Data were analyzed using χ2-test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test using SPSS 23.0 program. Results: The experimental group had a significant increase in learning presence, technology acceptance, and knowledge before and after the intervention compared to the control group. Conclusion: Virtual reality based anatomy education is an effective learner-centered educational program. From an educational perspective, VR anatomy education programs can improve anatomy knowledge by increasing students' acceptance of VR technology and increase their motivation to learn by increasing their sense of presence.

Relationship among Yangsaeng, Activities of Daily Living, and Physical Function in Korean Elders (노인의 양생과 신체기능과의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify relationships among Yangsaeng, activities of daily living (ADL), and physical activity in the elderly in Korea. Methods: A total of 257 subjects (ranged 60-88 yr of age) was recruited through convenient sampling. Data were collected with a self-reported questionnaire from March 2 through 25, 2009. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS/PC WIN 15.0. Results: The level of Yangsaeng was significantly different according to the level of health recognition (p<.05). The level of ADL was differed significantly according to age, successful aging, cohabitation, and health recognition. Physical activity was also significantly different according to age, educational level, cohabitation, (r=.385; p<.05) and health cognition (p<.05). The level of Yangsaeng was significantly correlated with ADL (r=.448) and physical activity (r=.385; p<.05). Conclusions: These findings help in understanding the health status of community-dwelling elders and suggest that promoting the Yangsaeng can be an effective intervention as a health promotion program for the elderly in Korea.

Effects of Team-based Simulation Training on Patient Safety Confidence and Nursing Competency among Nursing Students (팀 기반 시뮬레이션 실습교육이 간호학생의 환자안전 자신감과 간호역량에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of team-based simulation training (TBST) on patient safety confidence and nursing competency among nursing students. Methods: This study used a one group pretest-posttest design. Among the senior nursing students enrolled in an academic course in one nursing school, the convenience sample of 114 students was recruited. Participants received 15-session TBST (2 hours per session) over 8 weeks and completed the patient safety confidence and nursing competency scales, and a questionnaire of participants' responses to TBST. Data were analyzed using a descriptive statistics test, a paired t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: The results of this study showed that patient safety confidence and nursing competency significantly improved after TBST and there was a positive correlation between these variables. Conclusion: The findings indicate that TBST is effective for improving nursing students' patient safety confidence and nursing competency, and thus, team-based strategies can be useful to attain the goals of nursing education. Furthermore, the results of this study suggest further research to refine the relations between patient safety and nursing competency.

Development and Application of Simulation-based Nursing Education Program for Post-myomectomy Care in Nursing Students (간호 대학생의 시뮬레이션 기반 자궁근종절제술 후 간호교육 프로그램 개발과 적용)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and apply simulation-based nursing education program for post-myomectomy care in nursing students. Methods: One group pre-post design was utilized. One hundred and thirty two participants consisting of 66 nursing students 132 participants consisting of 66 nursing students team were recruited. The data were collected from March 2 to June 12, 2015. Eight hours of simulation-based education program for post-myomectomy care was operated. Forty five items of Clinical Competence Assessment Scale was developed and content validity was tested using the content validity index. Results: The total score of Clinical Competence Assessment Scale was 90 and mean score of it was 82 (SD 4.2). The item showing the lowest mean score was 'education for Foley catheter management'. Mean score of performance was 92.7%, education 90.2% and assessment 89.9% respectively. Conclusion: The findings suggest that it would be useful to use the simulation-based education program for post-myomectomy care for evaluating clinical performance in nursing students.

Factors Influencing the Professional Self-Concept among Nursing Students (간호학생의 간호전문직 자아개념과 임상실습만족, 자아존중감 간의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing nursing students' professional self-concept. Methods: This study was conducted through a survey on 365 nursing students. The data were collected by self-reporting questionnaires and analysed by the SPSS WIN 17.0 program using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean score of professional self-concept was 2.83. Professional self-concept showed that there were differences according to grade, satisfaction on college life, motivation on choice of nursing, satisfaction on nursing, school work credit, interpersonal relationship, health status. There was a significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and between satisfaction with clinical practice. Significant positive correlations between professional self-concept and self-esteem, satisfaction with clinical practice and self-esteem were found. The significant factors influencing professional self-concept were self-esteem, satisfaction on clinical practice, satisfaction on nursing, interpersonal relationship, which explained 45.1% of the variance. Conclusion: This study suggests that a strategy increasing self-esteem is needed to enhance nursing students' professional self-concept.

The Relationships of Korean Medicine (KM) Nursing Knowledge, Nursing Practice and Role Conflict with Retention Intention in KM Nurses (한방병원 간호사의 한방간호지식, 한방간호업무수행과 역할갈등이 재직의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of Korean medicine (KM) nursing knowledge, nursing practice and role conflict with retention intention among KM nurses. Methods: The study used a survey design with a sample of 152 nurses working at Korean medicine hospitals in Kyunggi province and Seoul. The data were collected from January 15 to March 18, 2016 and were analyzed with SPSS WIN 21.0. Results: The factors that influenced on retention intention were knowledge (${\beta}=.36$, p<.001) and role conflict (${\beta}=-.18$, p=.020) of KM nursing which explained 25.3% of retention intention in KM nurses (F=6.06, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings suggest that it is necessary to develop and offer KM nursing education programs for increasing retention intention among nurses in Korean medicine hospital. It is also important to specify the roles of KM nurses for reducing role conflict.

Nursing Problems in Oriental Nursing Practice Based on Nursing Documentation (간호기록을 이용한 한방 간호 실무에서의 간호 문제에 대한 조사 연구)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the types of nursing problems in oriental nursing practice. Methods: This study employed a descriptive survey design. Nursing documentation was retrospectively reviewed for patients discharged from an oriental medicine hospital during three months. Nursing diagnoses documented were mapped into the Clinical Care Classification System. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics. Results: Data were collected from 110 patients using nursing documentation. The number of nursing diagnoses documented was 204 with a mean of 1.9 per patient. The frequently occurring nursing diagnoses were 'risk for trauma' (48.0%), 'pain' (13.7%), and 'urinary elimination alteration' (7.8%). According to the Clinical Care Classification system, the safety component (51.5%) was the most common nursing problem in oriental nursing practice. Conclusion: The study finding suggested that major nursing problems in oriental nursing practice were related to patient safety. Therefore, oriental nursing education on patient safety should be emphasized to improve the quality of nursing care in oriental medicine hospitals.
