  • This study aims to derive the main factors for predicting student departure of university freshmen and provide the basis for establishing policies to prevent student departure at the institutional level. For this purpose, a random forest model is developed with the data observed for 2 years at a four-year private university in Seoul. In the prediction model, 6 variables of school adjustment factors and 12 variables of institution satisfaction factors are applied. The top 6 variables presenting the highest MDA turn out to be emotional stability, financial conditions, assurance in the choice of major, satisfaction with the choice of university, educational method(systematic teaching method), educational method(effectiveness of major education). Based on the results of this study, it is suggested the necessity of institutional design supporting freshmen to adapt to university life and stably continue their studies.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship among major satisfaction (MS), clinical competence (CC), career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMS), and career decision level (CDL) for undergraduate nursing students. A self-report instrument was used to measure MS, CC, CDMS, and CDL. Questionnaires were completed by 307 nursing students in three nursing colleges, and path analysis was employed to validate the proposed model and analyze the causal relationships among variables. Four constructs (MS, CC, CDMS, and career decision) were analyzed. To build a path model, MS and CC were linked to CDMS and career decision. The initial analysis suggested that the modification needed modification; therefore, a covariance link was added. The overall goodness of fit for indices indicated satisfactory path analysis. The indices were revealed as $x^2=2412$, GFI=0.996, AGFI=0.961, and RMSEA=0.068. As a result, the proposed model was acceptable with a good fit, and there were significant direct and indirect effects of paths in the model. Specifically, MS and CC had a direct influence on CDMS, and MS and CDMS directly affected CDL. Moreover, MS and CC had indirect effects on CDL through CDMS. These results imply that students' CDMS should be seriously considered when designing counseling programs for career guidance, and substantiality of CC education is needed to improve CDMS. These results may provide a practical guideline to provide educational intervention for nursing students.

  • Labor market participation and occupational status for workers majoring in(natural) science and engineering are estimated and compared with workers of other majors at three levels: employment, prestigious occupations, and good occupations. For this, we utilized 2% Public Use Sample of 2000 Korea Census. The results of two-stage probit models, which adjust sample selection bias, do not support the argument that graduates of science and engineering majors are relatively disadvantaged. Workers of engineering majors are more likely to have 'good occupations' at their early job careers, but their advantages fade away quickly as they are aging. Especially at their 40s, their probability of having 'good occupations' start to be likely lower than workers of social science majors. This may be due to low human capital accumulation rates at work places along with quickly outdated skills which are acquired in colleges.

  • To provide baseline data for interventions to improve nursing students' satisfaction with their major, this descriptive correlational study analyzed the relationships among emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and major satisfaction. To set up the research data, questionnaires were collected from 232 nursing students in 3 nursing colleges of cities K and B from May 15th, 2014 to June 15th, 2014. SPSS 21.0 was used to analyze the data for the descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson correlation coefficients. The results are as follows. First, the mean scores of emotional intelligence (4.93), critical thinking (3.43), and major satisfaction (3.76) were above the moderate level but showed significant differences according to gender, grades, and motivations for choosing the major and challenges in college life. Positive correlations were observed among emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and major satisfaction Therefore, when designing an intervention program to improve the major satisfaction, it is recommended to consider a plan that enables them to develop emotional intelligence and critical thinking.
