  • This study is a study to collect information about 'Limitations of functions' related learning. Especially, this study was conducted on three students who can find answers by algebraic procedure in the process of extreme problem solving. Students have had the experience of converting from their algebraic procedures to graphical expressions. This shows how they reflect on their algebraic procedures. This study is a study that observes these parts. To accomplish this, twelfth were teaching experiment in three high school students. And we analyzed the contents related to the research topic of this study. Through this, students showed the difference of expressions in the method of finding limits by using algebraic interpretation methods and graphs. In addition, we examined the connectivity of the limitations of functions problem solving process of functions using algebraic procedures and graphs in the process of converting algebraic expressions to graph expressions. This study is a study of how students construct limit concepts. As in this study, it is meaningful to accumulate practical information about students' limit conceptual composition. We hope that this study will help students to study limit concept development process for students who have no limit learning experience in the future.

  • This study was designed to gain insight to adopt CAS into secondary level algebra education in Korea. Most inactive usage of calculators in math and most negative effects of calculators on their achievements of Korean students were shown in International studies such as TIMSS-R. A comparative study was carried out with consideration of mathematical backgrounds and technological environments. 8 Korean students and 26 US students in Grade 11 were participated in this study. Subjects' Problem solving process and their strategies of CAS usage in classical Box-problem with CAS were analyzed. CAS helped modeling by providing symbolic manipulation commands and graphs with students' mathematical knowledge. Results indicates that CAS requires shifts focus in algebraic contents: recognition of decimal & algebraic presentations of numbers; linking various presentations, etc. The extent of instrumentation effects on the selection of problem solving strategies among Korea and US students. • Homological algebra has emerged and developed since 1950s. However, in 1890's Hilbert investigated the resolutions in his Syzygy Theorem which is a vital ingredient in homological algebra. In 1956 Serre has proved the finite global dimension of regular local rings. His result give a basic tool in homological algebra. This paper also deals with the depth formula that was raised by Auslander in 1961.

  • Linear Algebra are arguably the most popular math subjects in colleges. We believe that students' learning and understanding of linear algebra can be improved substantially if we incorporate the latest advanced information technologies in our teaching. We found that the open source mathematics program 'Sage' (http://sagemath.org) can be a good candidate to achieve our goal of improving students' interest and learning of linear algebra. In particular, we developed a simple mobile content which is available for Sage commands on common cell phones in 2009. In this paper, we introduce the mobile Sage which contains many Sage functions on a smart-phone and the mobile linear algebra content model(lecture notes, and video lectures, problem solving, and CAS tools) and it will be useful to students for self-directed learning in college mathematics education.

  • In this paper, we deal with various contents relating to the group concept in school mathematics and teaching of algebraic structures indirectly by combining these contents. First, we consider structure of knowledge based on Bruner, and apply these discussions to the teaching of algebraic structure in school algebra. As a result of these analysis, we can verify that the essence of algebraic structure is group concept. So we investigate the previous researches about group concept: Piaget, Freudenthal, Dubinsky. In our school, the contents relating to the group concept have been taught from elementary level indirectly. Tn elementary school, the commutative law and associative law is implicitly taught in the number contexts. And in middle school, various linear equations are taught by the properties of equality which include group concept. But these algebraic contents is not related to the high school. Though we deal with identity and inverse in the binary operations in high school mathematics, we don't relate this algebraic topics with the previous learned contents. In this paper, we discussed algebraic structure focusing to the group concept to obtain a connectivity among school algebra. In conclusion, the group concept can take role in relating these algebraic contents and teaching the algebraic structures in school algebra.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the error happening in the process of solving the simultaneous inequality with two unknown qualities and to propose the correct teaching method. We first introduce a problem about the simultaneous inequality with two unknown qualities. And we will see the solution which a student offers. Finally we propose the correct teaching method by analyzing the error happening in the process of solving the simultaneous inequality with two unknown qualities. The cause of the error are a wrong conception which started with the process of solving the simultaneous equality with two unknown qualities and an insufficient curriculum in connection with the simultaneous inequality with two unknown qualities. Especially we can find out the problem that the students don't look the interrelation between two valuables when they solve the simultaneous inequality with two unknown qualities. Therefore we insist that we must teach students looking the interrelation between two valuables when they solve the simultaneous inequality with two unknown qualities.

  • This study proposes a self learning material for understanding the key contents of Galois theory. This material is for teachers who have learned algebraic structures like group, field, and vector space which are related with Galois theory but do not clearly understand how algebraic structures are related with the solvability of polynomials and school mathematics. This material is likely to help them to overcome such difficulties. Even though proposed material is used mainly for self learning, the teachers may be helped once or twice by some professionals. In this article, two expressions 'solvability of polynomial' and 'solvability of equation' have the same meaning and 'teacher' means in-service mathematics teacher.

  • Given the importance of early experience in algebraic thinking, we designed six consecutive lessons in which $4^{th}$ graders were encouraged to recognize patterns in the process of finding the relationships between two quantities and to represent a given problem with various mathematical models. The results showed that students were able to recognize patterns through concrete activities with manipulative materials and employ various mathematical models to represent a given problem situation. While students were able to represent a problem situation with algebraic expressions, they had difficulties in using the equal sign and letters for the unknown value while they attempted to generalize a pattern. This paper concludes with some implications on how to connect algebraic thinking with students' arithmetic or informal thinking in a meaningful way, and how to approach algebra at the elementary school level.
