  • This paper discusses how we developed an index for measuring problem gambling severity and determined the cutoff score for identifying addicts. This index uses fewer items than the current index and will be particularly useful for telephone surveys. We selected four items among the nine Korean Problem Gambling Severity Index (K-PGSI) items based on our statistical analysis of a survey of 501 gamblers. We applied this four-item index to a survey of 1,584 adults. The analysis of this survey proved the validity of the reduced index. The sensitivity and specificity of this index was 1.00 and 0.99 respectively, showing again the usefulness of this scale.

  • The primary objectives of this study are twofold. One is to examine the psychometric properties of Family Empowerment Scale(FES) developed by Koren, DeChillo and Frisen(1992). The other is to develope a short-form FES. Data collected from 337 members of Parents' Solidarity of Children with Disabilities were used. FES had good internal consistency, but the results of confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) did not support the theoretical factor structure of the scale. Basic analyses such as correlation and descriptive analysis were performed to examine the characteristics of individual items and identify the limitation of the orignal FES. In addition, a series of CFA were carried out to develop a short-form FES. Finally 15 items were selected based on theoretical rationale and the results of CFA. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ and the model fit indices for the short-form FES indicated that this measure has good construct validity as well as internal consistency. In discussion, usefulness and potential contribution of this study were explored in relation to content development in the area of measuring instruments.

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to develop a short form of the normal depression scale for individual use in the school, health, industry, organization, and counseling settings, based on the original normal depression scale (17 items). Methods: To achieve this purpose, we selected five items from the original test and analyzed data using Mplus 7.4 and SPSS 21.0. Results: The normal depression scale-short form consists of 5 items. The reliability of the short form (test-retest reliability) was good. The content validity and internal structure validity (1 factor model) were verified. The cut score between normal and dysfunctional depression was determined to be 18. Conclusions: The normal depression scale-short form for individual screening is verified to have good reliability and validity, so it is expected to be useful to perform quick screening of normal depression in the practical settings.

  • This study was conducted to validate the Korean Love addiction Questionnaire-Short Form (K-LAQ-SF) applicable to Korean society. As a result of exploratory factor analysis for Love addiction 40 Questions(Peabody, 2005), the final 5 factors and 15 questions appeared, and the model fit of the final scale was confirmed through confirmatory factor analysis. The results of the equivalence test showed that the theoretical structure of the abbreviated scale works in the same way for each gender. The results of correlation analysis between K-LAQ-SF and original scale showed that the abbreviated scale represented the original scale relatively faithfully. Finally, the results of correlation analysis between this scale and relationship addiction, love type and depression showed that convergence, discrimination and criterion validity were secured. K-LAQ-SF is significant in that it can be usefully used to easily measure the characteristics of Korean adults' love addiction in a short time based on stable reliability and validity.

  • This study aimed to develop the short-form of age-friendly scale which was suitable for the Korean cities and to examine the validity. To develop the scale, WHO and Seoul welfare foundation's age-friendly city guide were compared and analyzed. The data for this study were collected on people aged over 55 years old living in Seoul. The results in exploratory factor analysis showed that seven-factor structure model was appropriate for the scale. Seven factors were outdoor amenity, transportation, leisure activity, social participation, social communication, health and welfare service, social exclusion. The results supported the construct and concurrent validity of the age-friendly scale. Also its good internal consistency was confirmed. The implication and limitation of the study and suggestions for the future studies were discussed.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the validity of WHOQOL-BREF (Brief form of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument) and to explore quality of life (QOL) by using WHOQOL-BREF in patients with stomach cancer after a curative resection. Materials and Methods: Fifty (50) patients with stomach cancer after a curative resection were recruited with informed consents. Age- and gender matched hospital staffs served as controls. The 100-item WHOQOL instrument was employed for the all subjects. The scores of the WHOQOL-BREF, which is a short version (26 questions) of the WHOQOL, and includes four domains (physical, psychological, social, and environmental), were compared with those of WHOQOL. Results: The scores of the WHOQOL-BREF were significantly correlated with those of the WHOQOL in all domains. Two domains, physical and social, were associated with worse quality of life in patients with stomach cancer after a curative resection. Conclusion: The WHOQOL-BREF is a valid instrument that is useful for evaluating the quality of life in patients with stomach cancer.

  • The purpose of the current study was to validate Fetzer Institute & National Institute on Aging Working Group[NIA](1999)'s Brief-Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality Scale (BMMRS) in Korean adults. The Korean version of BMMRS, Spiritual Well-Being Scale(SWS), Korean Sprituality Scale(KSS), Penn State Worry Questionnaire(PSWQ), and Intolerance of uncertainty Scale(IUS) were administered to the 286 students and community samples. A principle axis factoring analysis with direct oblimin rotation and Kaiser normalization identified a six-factor solution accounting for 66.24% of the variance in scores, labeled as: positive spiritual experience, negative spiritual experience, forgiveness, religious practices, negative congregational support, and positive congregational support. Confirmatory factor analysis results showed that 6 factor model of BMMRS have a good fitness. Also, the internal consistency(.64~.97) and the test-retest reliablity was adequate.(.72~.88) Korean version of BMMRS has adequate psychometric characteristics so it can be used to verify the effects of various compassion-related psychotherapeutic approaches.

  • This study validates an abridged version of the age integration scale by Chung et al. (2015), which constitutes sub-dimensions of age flexibility and age heterogeneity-from Riley et al. (1994)-and observes disparities in the perception of age integration among different socio-cultural characteristics. This study analyzed 1,433 people in the "Age Integration and Generation Integration Survey" data, with the support of the Social Science Competency Enhancement Project (SSK) (supported by the Korea Research Foundation). This paper analyzed the data using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, multiple-group factor analysis, and a compare means test. The results are as follows. First, the scale was abridged to 13 items from 28, of which eight items concern age heterogeneity and five concern age flexibility. Second, the multi-group analysis did not show a significant difference among younger, middle, and older age groups, therefore allowing the scale to be used among all age groups. Third, when sociocultural characteristics were observed, younger adults showed differences in their levels of age integration, age heterogeneity, and age flexibility regarding their residential area. Middle-aged adults showed dif f erences in their levels of age integration, age heterogeneity, and age flexibility regarding their residential area and social status. Older adults showed differences in their level of age integration regarding their residential area, education level, and social status. They also showed differences in the level of age flexibility regarding their residential area and social status and differences in the level of age heterogeneity regarding their residential area and education. Based on the results of the study, political and practical measures to promote perception on age integration in the future were suggested.

  • The aim of this study was to validate the Korean Version of the Empathy Quotient-Short form(EQ-Short-K) in a sample of Korean nursing students. A total 528 students(494 female, 34 male) were studied by 2 groups. To provide a validity of the Empathy Quotient-Short form in Korean sample, exploratory factor analysis, reliability test and Pearson correlation coefficient were conducted. In study 1 (N=298), the finding of factor analysis confirmed that 11 of the 22 EQ-Short items were presented as a single-factor structure. The reliability estimate of the EQ-Short-K was high(.88). In terms of criterion validity, the EQ-short-K correlated positively with Interpersonal Reactivity Index(IRI)(r=.279, p<.000). In study 2 (N=230), the finding identified that the EQ-Short-K correlated positively with Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire(ICQ)(r=.351, p<.000). It suggested that the EQ-Short-K had satisfactory internal consistency and validity, thereby the EQ-Short-K can be used as a meaningful measure for empathy among Korean nursing domain.

  • In this study, a Korean abbreviation scale to measure love and compassion toward other person was developed based on a critical review on Compassionate Love Scale(CLS; Sprecher, & Fehr, 2005). In the study 1, 12 items were selected from the original version of 21 item CLS by surveying a sample of 207 college students on the basis of several psychometric characteristics (i.e., discriminability, coefficient of factor loading, and contribution to internal consistency). In the study 2, the validity of 12 item version, ACLS (Ajou Compassionate Love Scale), was confirmed by examining the factor structure, reliability, and correlations with other related scales. The results clearly showed that ACLS not only had a sufficient psychometric properties as the CLS, but also superior to the CLS in terms of parsimoniousness. Limitations and implications for future research of ACLS were discussed.
