  • The purpose of this study is to determine what children's rights to play are. For this purpose, we extracted the core contents of schools' play environments and we developed a checklist that schools can use to evaluate their own play environments. We reviewed the UN Committee on the Rights of Children and the General Comments No. 17. Through this process, we found 16 core contents that the play environment should have. We conducted focus group interviews with children, parents and teachers, who are principle people involved with school play. The focus group interviews discussed the basic elements of the school play environment. The contents' validity was reviewed by a group of professionals. Based on this, we created an evaluation checklist with 10 major areas of the school play environment. The 10 areas of the school play environment evaluation scale are as follows. The ten areas of the play environment assessment scale for the school environment to ensure children's right to play are sufficient play time, sufficient play space, a child's best interests and the child's participation, nondiscrimination, diversity and freedom, challenge and adventure, safety, school policy, the play has an educating component, and community cooperation.

  • This study was designed to examine the relationships between rough and tumble play and children's social language use. The subjects were 90 children in a nursery school in N city. The data was analyzed using the Pearson correlation and stepwise regression. The results were as follows. First, there was a significant positive relationship between rough and tumble play, and the children's social language use. Second, the children's social language use' sub valuables had an effect on rough and tumble play. In particular, 'demand of action' has negative effects on the 'pull and push', and 'catch'. Furthermore, 'rejection' has negative effects on 'collapse' and 'rush'. This suggests that a rough and tumble play program can be developed to enhance the children's social language use.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the insights that teachers has learned through developing preschooler's classroom into field-trip-oriented ones with role play areas. The data of this study was collected from participatory observation and in-depth interviews, which included videos, photos, teachers' journal, descriptive questionnaire, and interview records. The whole process of organizing role-play oriented class was composed of four steps: activities before the trip, activities on-the-spot, activities after the trip, and its evaluation. Firstly, activities before the trip were making the lists of questions, deciding children who ask the questions, making rules on the trip, understanding the purpose of the trip. Secondly, on-the-spot activities included having a tour of the place and asking the questions. Thirdly, activities after the trip was constructing the classroom into small real world with various sections. This required the teachers to reflect the field trips, make plans how to construct, prepare for the data, and furnish the classroom with role-play areas. In the process of furnishing the classroom with small real world, the field trips played a big role as the learning opportunities for language development, and keeping public rules.

  • Objective : The purpose of the study is to find out how group sensory integrative (SI) intervention enhances play skill and social interaction of the children with sensory integration disorders. Method : Three children who were showing problems related in sensory integration received 12 SI intervention sessions. The Sensory Profile (SP) and The Social Maturity Scale (SMS) were accomplished by the subject's primary caregiver. Test of Playfulness (ToP) and Peer Social Interactions Rating Scale (PSIRS) were utilized to investigate the children's play skills and social interactions with their friends. Goal Attainment Scale (GAS) is applied to assess the children's play skill, social interactions with peer, and sensory processing at each session. Data was collected before- and after the intervention and analyzed by the Wilcoxon matched-pair signed rank test with SPSS/WIN version 10.0 and Microsoft Excel. Results : The average scores of ToP, PSIRS, and SMS were increased after the sensory integrative intervention. However, there is no significant difference in the play skills and social interactions between data of pre-intervention and the one of post-intervention. The score of the GAS was frequently increased in terms of the play skills and sensory processing throughout the whole sessions. Conclusions : This study reveals a possibility of that the group sensory integrative intervention may affect not only sensory processing ability, but also play skills and social interactions of children experiencing difficulties of sensory processing. Future research should supplement limitations of this study regarding insufficient number of the subject and the short period of the experiment.
