  • A total of 230 randomly collected formalin-fixed fecal samples (submitted to the Severance Hospital, Yonsei University) were selected for tests for human cryptosporidiosis. The stool specimens were examined for Cwptosporidium oocysts by acid-fast (AF) stain, auramin-rhodamine (AR) stain, and monoclonal antibody (mAb) OW3 fluorescence method specific for oocyst wall. Of the 230 stool specimens, 21% were identified by the AF method, 22% were identified by the AR method, and 10% were Identified by the mob fluorescence method, indicating that human Crvptosporidium infections have been existing in Korea.

  • Fecal samples were collected from 257 dogs in four areas in Korea during the period of .january 1996 to November 1997 and examined by immunofluorescence assay for Crwptosporinium oocysts using a commercial diagnostic kit (Meridian Diagnostics, Cincinnati, Ohio) . Of the 257 samples, 25 (9.7%) were positive for Crvptosporiniun. Differences were noted in the prevalence of canine cryptosporidiosis in both areas and dog types. The results provide a further evidence of environmental contamination and widespread distribution of the parasite in Korea.

  • The prevalence of head louse (Pediculus hamanus var. capitis) infestation in preschool and school children in 9 urban and 8 rural areas of Korea, was investigated. Of 11,865 children who were examined for head lice and nits, 2,900 (24.4%) pere found infested. The over-all infestation rate of rural children, 58.9%, was higher than that of urban children, 14.4%. There also existed significant differences in the infestation rate among various regions of urban as well as rural areas. Females were more infested than males. But there was no difference in infestation rate in either sex of Preschool alee. The infestation rate increased gradually from the age of 6, reached a plateau between 9∼12 years of age and thereafter slowly decreased. The infestation rate of an orphanage children was higher than that of general childhood population. Health education and mass-delousing attempt are urgently required to lower such a high prevalence of head louse infestation in Korea.

  • In order to monitor the parasites, 635 fecal samples were taken from quail in Chonbuk area. The isolation and identification of the parasites were determined by the fecal examination using the floatation and microscopical examination, respectively. The detection rate of the eggs and unsporulated oocysts from the intestine and feces were 37.8%(240 heads). In the concerns of complicated infection, infection with single, double and triple were 43.4%(217 heads), 3.4%(22 heads) and 0.1%(1 heads), respectively. The parasites isolated were identified as eimeria spp from 205 heads, strongyloides avium from 36 heads and demanyssus spp from 23 heads.

  • A total of 2,026 leprosy patients of the National Sorokdo Hospital was examined their infestparasites by cellophane thick smear method in January, 1983. The egg positive cases of Taenia spp. were treated with bithionol and the segments of Taenia were collected for species identification. The results were as follows: 1. Total egg Positive rate of any kind helminth was 78.2% and cumulative total was 85.2%. The egg positive rate for each helminth was as follow; Taenia spp. 3.4%, Ascaris lumbricoides 4.5%, Trichuris trichiura 72.1%, Clonorchis sinensis 2.8% and other 0.05%. 2. A total of 66 Taenia eggpPositive cases was treated; out of them proglottids of Taenia were collected from 26 cases. All of the collected worms were identified as T. saginata. The results revealed signiBicantly high egg positive rate of T. trichiura. However, A. lumbricoides was found to be controlled considerably by repeated chemotherapy during past 3 years. If chromotherapeutic agent is replaced with oxantel-pyrantel tablet, better result is expected. No clue was found for prevalence of T. sodium from both human and the pig in the island.

Isolation and Identification of the parasites from the feces were determined by the fecal examination using the floatation and microscopical examination, respectively. The detection rate was 21.6%, and mixed infection rate was single 18.0%(15 heads), double 2.4%(2 heads), and triple 1.2% (1 head). The isolates were identified as Strongyloides axei from 7 heads. Trichuris spp from 3 heads, Entamoeba histolytica 3 heads, Toxacaris leonina from 3 heads, and Eimeria spp from 2 heads.

  • A small scale survey on intestinal parasitic infections was investigated by subjecting residents of North Korea to recommend a plausible control strategy. The Kato-Katz method was applied to 235 residents in a borderline city and 46 in a refugee camp in borderline China. Only eggs of Ascaris and Trichuris were detected in 41.1% and 37.6% respectively but most of them were light infected. Females were infected in 61.2% while 53.1% males were egg positive. By age, residents in their 30s showed highest egg positive rates. The survey confirmed high prevalence of soil-transmitted intestinal nematodes in rural areas in North Korea It is recommended to implement mass chemotherapy for al residents with a part sample examination in rural areas, North Korea.

  • In order to survey the prevalence of Buxtonelln sulcatc in Kyonggi-do in 1984 and 1994, the feces of cattle were collected and examined. Of 792 cattle in 1984 and 293 in 1994, cysts of B. sulcata were detected from 266 (33.6%) and 101 (34.5%) cattle respectively. The positive rates were 85.9% and 64.2% in breeder cattle, 44.8% and 9.4% in dairy cattle, 7.5% and 14.9% in Korean cattle and 1.8% in beef cattle. In spring, the cyst positive rates were 62.5% in 1984 and 27.8% in 1994; 20.1% and 66.7% in summer; 21.3% and 0% in autumn; and 34.8% 64.6% in winter. More cattle, 69.1%(184) and 55.5% (56) in 1984 and 1994, had diarrhea among the cyst postive cattle than those of cyst negative, 37.6% (198) and 32.3% (62).
