Purpose: This research provided basic data for refraction by comparing the corrected diopter of trial lens and phoropter. Methods: We compared the corrected diopter of trial lens and phoropter, and analyzed statistical significance and relations of the spherical lens corrected diopter and cylindrical lens corrected diopter according to the types (trial lens and phoropter) of subjective refractive instruments. Also we analyzed statistical significance and relations between cylindrical lens corrected diopter at the astigmatism and the types (trial lens and phoropter) of subjective refractory instruments. Results: When we measured the corrected diopter of simple myopia, the mean value for corrected diopter was S-2.74D using the trial lens and S-2.65D using the phoropter. So the corrected diopter was 0.09D smaller when measured by phoropter. The degree of astigmatism was measured C-0.81D using the trial lens and C-0.77D using the phoropter which showed that the measured value was 0.04D smaller using the phoropter. On correlation analysis between the refractive instruments (trial lens and phoropter) and the corrected diopter, there was significant (p<0.01) strong correlation between refractory machine and corrected spherical diopter (r=0.996) and the correlation between refractory machine and corrected cylindrical diopter was r=0.986 and was also significant (p<0.01). Conclusions: The use of phoropter than trial lens was more desirable when performing refraction on high myopia (simple refractive error, high astigmatism), and when using trial lens, you should consider the vertex distance and the gap between overlapped lenses before prescription.
The purpose of this study was to investigate sole effect of therapy of spectacles correction on the refractive amblyopia. Spectacles were prescribed to give the same effect as the occlusion therapy undercorrecting in the case of hyperopia, and effectiveness of the therapy was compared with occlusion therapy without additional prescription. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The higher anisometropic power was the lower initial visual acuity was. 2. Anisometropic power did not influence final visual acuity. 3. The latter beginning time of therapy was the higher astigmatism was. 4. Therapy of spectacles correction on the hyperopic amblyopia was quite effective.
Purpose: This study was conducted to estimate the changes of corrected diopter and corrected visual acuity with the change in vertex distance. Also we aimed to provide basic data for refraction test. Methods: Using the trial lens, we measured the corrected diopter and corrected visual acuity after performing binocular balance test. We measured the changes of corrected diopter and corrected visual acuity in change of vertex distance. We analyzed statistical significance and relations between vertex distance and corrected diopter and corrected visual acuity. Results: There was no difference in corrected diopter with the change of vertex distance within -1.00D, but the corrected diopter increased with it over - 1.25D. In particular, the change of diopter was largest when the vertex distance increased 15 mm. At over 11.00D, there was large changes of diopter with the changes of vertex distance at 5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm. On correlation analysis between the vertex distance and the corrected diopter, there was strong correlation (r=0.999 at 5 mm increase of vertex distance, r=0.982 at 10 mm increase and r=0.957 at 15 mm increase) and also there was significant (p<0.01). At the change of visual acuity in increased of vertex distance, the range of a decrease in visual acuity was large when the changes of vertex distance was largest. On correlation analysis between the vertex distance and the corrected visual acuity, there was strong correlation (r=0.969 at 5 mm increase of vertex distance, r=0.985 at 10 mm increase and r=0.994 at 15 mm increase) and also there was significant (p<0.01). Conclusions: The vertex distance was very important at the refraction test and at wearing spectacle. On correlation analysis between the vertex distance and the corrected diopter, and the corrected visual acuity, there was strong correlation and statistically significant. Therefore, the vertex distance should be kept at the refraction using trial lens, and the best fitting was made not to slipping forward, and so we suggested regular refitting of spectacle and the managing method of spectacle were educated to the spectacle wearers.

We investigated the effect of age at initial correction, of 44 refractive amblyopic patients duration of correction on corrected visual acuity with the lapse of time for mean 33months(3months-59months). Full cycloplegic corrections were prescribed at the initial visit to all subjects. The distribution of initial corrected visual acuity was 0.02 to 0.5. Age at initial correction varied from 3 years to 12 years. The refractive error appeared to have the greatest influence on the visual outcome, showing continuous visual improvement after initial correction. But the age at initial correction did not appear to influence on the initial and final corrected visual acuity showed a significant difference, irrespective of age at the initial correction Or degree of anisometropia.
Ablation depth of cornea in refractive keratectomy was calculated by Munnerlyn formula. The calculations were preformed for various optical diameter (4 mm~8 mm) and various amount of corrections (-1 Dptr ~ -12 Dptr). The results to be compared with the Munnerlyn approximated formula had little effect within lower corrections, but in higher corrections > 6 Dptr can be occurred the error of 1 Dptr. Although ablation depth were evaluated, the results were only calculated by mathematical model of geometric assumptions. Because ablation depth can vary with operation conditions, the correction factor should be considered not only ablation depth by Munnerlyn formula but also surgeon-specific factor.
Purpose : The purposes of this study were to evaluate the changes of intraocular pressure according to corneal ablation amount after corneal refractive surgery and the changes of intraocular pressure according to refractive errors before corneal refractive surgery. Methods : The mean age of adults who underwent LASIK corneal refractive surgery were $37.34{\pm}7.42years$, and 108 adults(48 males, 60 females) were participated in this study. Refractive errors, intraocular pressure, and corneal ablation amount were measured using an autorefractor, a noncontact tonometer, and an excimer laser. All test values were considered statistically significant when p<0.05. Results : The mean intraocular pressure before corneal refractive surgery was $15.08{\pm}2.60mmHg$ in males and $14.16{\pm}2.67mmHg$ in females. The decrease of intraocular pressure after corneal refractive surgery were 4.22mmHg in males and 3.61mmHg in females. Spherical equivalent power were $-3.89{\pm}2.17D$ in males and $-4.45{\pm}2.92D$ in females before corneal refractive surgery, and $-0.10{\pm}0.46D$ in males and $-0.04{\pm}0.46D$ in females after corneal refractive surgery. The corneal ablation amount after corneal refractive surgery were statistically significant, with $53.95{\mu}m$ in males and $61.26{\mu}m$ in females. There was significant correlation between corneal ablation amount and decrease of intaocluar pressure(r=0.2299, p<0.001). As the growth of corneal ablation amount in males, the decrease of intraocular pressure was significantly increased. As the growth of refractive error, the amount of decrease in intraocular pressure was also significant. The decrease of intraocualr pressure were $3.04{\pm}2.18mmHg$ in low refractive error, $4.10{\pm}2.16mmHg$ in middle refractive error, and $4.65{\pm}3.29mmHg$ in high refractive error. Conclusion : We found that intraocular pressure decreased after corneal refractive surgery by noncontact tonometer and the change of intraocular pressure which is an important index for glaucoma diagnosis, may affect the judgment of eye disease. We think that a preliminary questionnaire whether corneal refractive surgery is necessary for the measurement of intraocular pressure.
Purpose: To investigate the corneal recovery after discontinuing orthokeratology (OK) lenses wear in children for long-term period. Methods: Among the OK lens wearers who wear over 8 months and showed successful refractive correction, 25 subjects were selected who want to discontinue the OK lenses. Uncorrected visual acuity, refractive correction, corneal curvature (Sim K), central corneal thickness and corneal eccentricity were measured during the OK lens wearing period and after discontinuation for 1 month. Results: Uncorrected visual acuity and corneal shape had remodeled significantly during the OK lens wear and recovered significantly during the first week of discontinuation. Uncorrected visual acuity and refractive correction had achieved full recovery 2 weeks after discontinuation of lens wear and were highly correlated with the changes in corneal thickness. But corneal shape recovered slowly, eccentricity had recovered fully after 1 month and corneal curvature and central thickness had not been achieved full recovery until 1 month after discontinuation. Conclusions: Recovery of after longterm use of OK lens is rapid for refractive change, but slow for corneal curvature and central thickness that to refit the contact lenses, practitioners need patience.
In this study, corneal power and eye refraction error were studied on myopic of unaccommodated koreans. The mean of refraction error power is -2.39D(male : -2.75D, female : -2.02D). The mean of corneal refraction error power is +43.90D(male : +44.07D, female : +43.71D). It is +0.90D higher than that of the model eye by Gullstrand(about + 43.00D).
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of age in the response to long-term overnight orthokeratology (OK) lens wearing. Methods: Among volunteers, ninety-five healthy subjects who had no eye diseases and could wear OK contact lens at least for 8 hours every day were divided into three groups children, youngsters and young adults. Unaided logMAR visual acuity, refractive error, apical corneal radius, corneal asphericity and central corneal thickness were measured with different period; before and after one day, one week, two weeks, one month, three months and six months of OK lens wear. Paired student t-test, ANOVA analysis and Pearson correlation were used with a critical p value of 0.05 for statistical analysis. Results: All groups showed statistically significant (p<0.001) improvement in unaided visual acuity, a trend for flattening in the apical corneal radius, decrease in central corneal thickness and less prolate after OK lens wear. The child group showed significantly rapid change (p<0.001) in visual acuity, and apical corneal radius showed that they reached the targeted refractive change earlier compared with youngster and adult groups. The visual effect of OK lens was significantly related with the change in central corneal thickness after long-term OK lens wear, especially in child and youngster group, and central corneal thickness were highly correlated with the targeted refractive change. Conclusions: Visual acuity change is statistically correlated with the central corneal thickness change, which is highly correlated with targeted refractive change in the long-term orthokeratology and younger lens wearers showed a rapid response to OK lens wear, suggesting a reduced epithelial response with increasing age. The results found this study extends our understanding and development in the long-term orthokeratology.
Purpose: This study are to analyze and to compare between pupillary size, reaction time, refractive error, corrected vision, dominant eye, static visual angle (SVA) and kinetic visual acuity (KVA) of male and female college students, to measure KVA of them in full correction and to identify changes of KVA by +0.50 D and -0.50 D spherical power addition respectively in full correction condition. Methods: KVA, SVA, pupillary size, reaction time, refractive error, corrected vision and dominant eye of 40 male and 40 female optical science students were measured by utilizing KOWA AS-4A, reaction time measurement program, subjective refractometer, and objective refractometer, and KVAs were measured when +0.50 D/-0.50 D were added in both eyes respectively. Results: Binocular KVA of whole subjects was $0.45{\pm}0.22$, and in monocular KVAs were $0.36{\pm}0.19$ for right eye and $0.34{\pm}0.19$ for left eye, and binocular KVA was significantly higher than monocular KVA. It appeared that the better SVA was, the better KVA was in significant way, and in terms of refractive error the less myopia amount was, the better KVA was, but it was not significant statistically. The lower astigmatism was, the slightly and significantly higher KVA was when dividing between equal or less than -1.00 D astigmatism group and over -1.00 D astigmatism group. In resulting from correction condition of refractive error KVAs were $0.45{\pm}0.22$ for full correction, $0.26{\pm}0.15$ for +0.50 D addition, $0.48{\pm}0.22$ for -0.50 D addition which indicates that KVA in over myopia correction was significantly the highest and followed by full correction and under correction. Similar findings were revealed in both male and female, and KVA of male was better than female in comparing between male and female. There was no significantly different KVA between dominant eye and non-dominant eye. Conclusions: Accordingly, it is concluded that KVA is related with far distance SVA, astigmatism amount, and refractive error amount except a dominant eye. Through this research, it was found that prescription for enhancing KVA is to make full correction or to overcorrect slightly myopia.
