  • The oral cavity is a window into the health of the whole body and a gateway for many harmful bacteria. It is a very important part of our body. The biggest advantage of genetic testing is that it can systematically prevent and manage diseases by examining bacteria in the oral cavity and predicting systemic diseases that may occur in our body through big data AI algorithm analysis. Therefore, in this paper, the researcher's family conducts genetic testing directly to derive the results. In this study, in November 2022, 4 family members of the researcher listened to a prior explanation from 1 dentist and 1 dental hygienist at J Dental Clinic, a preventive dental clinic located in Seoul, and after filling out the consent form, oral examination and genetic testing were performed. Genetic testing was performed with Dr.*** for adults and He***** products for middle and elementary school students. Genetic testing, which is currently being conducted in Korea, has the advantage that subjects can access it relatively easily without drawing blood, but it also has limitations such as time and cost. Nevertheless, I think it is a part to be highly evaluated in that systemic diseases can be predicted through oral microorganisms.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of oral health education feedback using $Qraycam^{TM}$. The middle school students 118 were divided into intervention group (59) and control group (59) subjects evaluated the dental plaque score using $Qraycam^{TM}$ after oral health education at baseline. Then, the $Qraycam^{TM}$ images view only sent to students and parents of the intervention group by text message. After 4 weeks both intervention group and control group were evaluated dental plaque by $Qraycam^{TM}$ re-taking. Then, they filled out the questionnaire. Both ${\Delta}R$ value and SPS(Simple Plaque Score) were statistically significant reduced in groups performed feedback(p<0.001). The oral health behavior, toothbrushing of intervention group was significantly higher compared to the control group(p<0.001). Also the importance of oral health was significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group(p<0.001). The effect of dental plaque reducing, toothbrushing time and subjective oral health importance were higher in the intervention group who received feedback using $Qraycam^{TM}$ image. Therefore it was expected to be able to utilize $Qraycam^{TM}$ image as a visual feedback tool of oral health education.

  • The purpose of this study is to use basic data of dental hygiene curriculum with a new technique called motivational interviewing of communication skill to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method of oral health care. In this study, we performed oral health care program that has been made in dental hygiene department to university students. It was assigned to the control group and 66 and 32 experimental group based on the date of the first visit time. It conducted motivational interviewing of a total of three times in the experimental group. The analytical results of the measurements obtained in the oral examination and questionnaires. The results were as follows: The experimental group measured value was reduced after the intervention compared to before the PSR to evaluate the state of periodontal, gingival index, calculus index, plaque control record (PCR; O'Leary plaque index), simple plaque scor of Quantitative Light Induced Fluorescnece Digital measurement value (p<0.05). Experimental group decreased more and more the result of changes in the reduction of the average of the PCR. But control group was reduced to 3 weeks and increased back to the middle 16 weeks. There was also support interaction between the measurement point and the groups (p<0.05). Re-visit adherence of fit, 12.1% in the control group, the experimental group was 43.7% in the period of participation in the oral health care program. Thus, visit adherence of the experimental group was higher. In this study, a group that has motivational interviewing, It was able to confirm the improvement of oral health state. Discussion of the motivational interviewing can be applied to oral health care program.

  • The changes of the microorganism composition after therapeutic radiation for oral cancer patients are not well known and the long-term follow-up data are not reported. To obtain basic data for understanding of pathogenesis and prevention and treatment of dental caries and mucositis occuring after radiation therapy, 7 of the oral cancer patients presented at the Seoul National University Oral & Maxillofacial Department between 1997 and 1998 whose treatment plan included radiation therapy were recruited to investigate the changes in bacterial composition(total aerobic count, Candida, Staphylococci, Lactobacilli, S. mutans, and S. salivarius (mitis, sanguis)) of the saliva before, during, and after radiation therapy. The basic data obtained from this study on identification and composition change of the bacteria in saliva of patients treated with radiation therapy can be used (1) as a reference for deciding on the ideal anti-microbial spectrum of the oral rinsing agent to be used in patients treated with radiation therapy for malignant tumor of the head and neck region. (2) to enhance the understanding of increase of opportunistic infection after immunochemical changes of the saliva and its relation to specific bacterial infection. (3) as a reference in prescribing prophylactic antibiotics in immunodepressed patients after radiation therapy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of a toothbrush with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on periodontitis-associated dental biofilm attached to a zirconia surface by static and dynamic methods. Materials and Methods: Zirconia disks (12 mm diameter, 2.5 mm thickness) were inserted into a 24-well plate (static method) or inside a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) biofilm reactor (dynamic method) to form dental biofilms using Streptococcus gordonii and Fusobacterium nucleatum. The disks with biofilm were subdivided into five treatment groups-control, commercial photodynamic therapy (PDT), toothbrush alone (B), brush with LED (BL), and brush with LED+erythrosine (BLE). After treatment, the disks were agitated to detach the bacteria, and the resulting solutions were spread directly on selective agar. The number of viable bacteria and percentage of bacterial reduction were determined from colony counts. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to visualize alterations in bacterial morphology. Results: No significant difference in biofilm formation was observed between dynamic and static methods. A significant difference was observed in the number of viable bacteria between the control and all experimental groups (P < 0.05). The percentage of bacterial reduction in the BLE group was significantly higher than in the other treated groups (P < 0.05). SEM revealed damaged bacterial cell walls in the PDT, BL, and BLE groups, but intact cell walls in the control and B groups. Conclusion: The findings suggest that an LED toothbrush with erythrosine is more effective than other treatments in reducing the viability of periodontitis-associated bacteria attached to zirconia in vitro.

  • The main object of this study is to render a better dental education to mental disabilities, teachers, and their parents. By providing a better dental education to them, mental disabilities would understand the importance of their oral hygiene. The study was held in Seoul at two different locations, named H and E mental welfare facilities. Ninety Three mental disabilities were studied by observing their oral behavior, simple oral hygiene index and plaque index prior and post to dental education. At the end of education, following result were gathered from two mental facilities. First, the level of oral behavior in Class 1,2, and 3 mental disabilities were observed prior and post to the dental education. Overall, there was no significant difference among Class 1 mental disabilities with the dental education. Second, in simple oral hygiene index, the severity of mental illness has affected on their oral behavior (F=6.322, p<.001). Third, in simple oral hygiene index, the frequency of dental education, regardless of severity of mental illness has affected on their oral hygiene (F=5.961, p<.01). Fourth, the plaque index also illustrated that the frequency of dental education, regardless of severity of dental illness has affected on their oral hygiene (F=5.126, p<.05). Finally, the general characteristics of mental disabilities according to changes in oral health awareness to gender, age, disability type, educational level do not statistically significant in all variables. Their simple oral hygiene index and plaque index advanced, although after a while they started to lose focus, which brought back their old habits. Nevertheless, in conclusion I believe that helping mental disabilities more frequently to constant reminder, will not only keep them entertained, but help them realize how important oral hygiene practice is, hopefully increasing and benefiting those with mental disabilities for future reference.
