  • In school mathematics, the definition and concept of a differentiation has been dealt with as a formula. Because of this reason, the learners' fundamental knowledge of the concept is insufficient, and furthermore the learners are familiar with solving routine, typical problems than doing non-routine, unfamiliar problems. Preceding studies have been more focused on dealing with the issues of learner's fallacy, textbook construction, teaching methodology rather than conducting the more concrete and efficient research through experiment-based lessons. Considering that most studies have been conducted in such a way so far, this study was to create a lesson plan including teaching resources to guide the understanding of differential coefficients and derivatives. Particularly, on the basis of the theory of Historical Genetic Process Principle, this study was to accomplish the its goal while utilizing a technological device such as GeoGebra. The experiment-based lessons were done and analyzed with 68 first graders in S high school located in G city, using Posttest Only Control Group Design. The methods of the examination consisted of 'learning comprehension' and 'learning satisfaction' using 'SPSS 21.0 Ver' to analyze students' post examination. Ultimately, this study was to suggest teaching methods to increase the understanding of the definition of differentials.

  • Traditional morphological identification difficulties, such as phenotypic plasticity, misidentification of cryptic species, and larval stage species, can be compensated for by using DNA analysis techniques, such as DNA barcoding, in surveying zooplankton populations, including species identification. Recently, the rapid development of DNA sequencing techniques has allowed DNA-based community analysis not only for zooplankton assemblages in various aquatic ecosystems but also for the gut contents of zooplankton that are limited by conventional methods such as visual and microscopic identification. Therefore, the application of DNA sequencing can help understand biological interactions through the analysis of zooplankton food sources. The present paper introduces the major DNA-based approaches in zooplankton research topics, including taxonomic approaches by DNA barcoding, community-level approaches by metabarcoding, and gut content analyses, summarizes the analysis methods, and finally suggests the methodological topics that need to be considered for future applications.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate elementary school students' understandings about scientific inquiry. Data were collected from 119 elementary students who are in the 4th grade using the Views About Scientific Inquiry questionnaire for elementary students (VASI-E). We also conducted semi-structured interviews of 21 students from 119 students who responded to VASI-E. Students' responses were analyzed as naive, mixed, or informed views on each aspect of scientific inquiry that VASI-E includes. We found that, first, 53.8% of students have mixed views, and 30.3% of students have informed views, and 16% of students have naive views on the knowledge 'investigation begin with a question'. Second, 54.6% of students have naive views, 37.8% of students have mixed views, and 7.6% of students have informed views on the knowledge 'scientists use many methods to answer their questions.' Third, 47.9% of students have informed views, 34.5% of students have naive views, and 17.6% of students have mixed views on 'procedures guided by question asked.' Fourth, 55.5% of students have mixed views, 42% of students have informed views, and only 2.5% of students have naive views on 'conclusions must be consistent with data and explanations come from data and prior knowledge.' Based on the results, implications for teaching and learning scientific inquiry at elementary level in Korea were discussed.

  • This study is to investigate the effects and characteristics of science and engineering integrated lessons on elementary students' creative engineering problem solving propensity (CEPSP). The science and engineering integrated lessons used in this study was a 10 lesson-hours STEM program, co-developed by University of Minnesota and Purdue University. The program was implemented in the 6th grade science class of H Elementary School located in P Metropolitan city. The main data of this study are the pre-post CEPSP result and interview with 5 students collected before and after the research. The CEPSP result was analyzed by a paired-sample t-test and hierarchical cluster analysis. As a result of the t-test, it was found that overall, the program has a positive effect on the students' CEPSP score. As a result of cluster analysis, it was confirmed that studnets' CEPSP could be classified into two groups (lower and higher score cluster). Five students whose, CEPSP score has significantly improved after the lessons were interviewed to find out what the characteristics of the program that contribute the significant change are. As a result of conducting centroid analysis of the interview transcription and the hybrid analysis method, it was found that the meaningful experiences that the five students commonly shared were 'problem solving through collaboration' and 'through repeated experiments (redesign)', problem solving' and 'utilization of scientific knowledge'. As minor reactions, 'choice of the best experimental method' and 'difference between science and engineering' appeared.

  • The currently implemented Positive List System, sales manager training, and pesticide sales record systems focus on the safety of determined pesticide use, but the proposed agrochemical pharmacist (AP) system aims accurate diagnosis and reasonable prescription. In this study, 81% of famers claimed expert assistance for purchasing and applying pesticides, and 42~86% of sales managers insisted on the strengthening expertise in diagnosis and prescription. In the institutionalization of AP, a special implementation guideline is essential to embrace the present sales managers with long experience. Sales managers of commercial and agricultural cooperatives recognize the qualifications of agrochemical pharmacists as a strategy to differentiate themselves from competitors, and increase sales through market positioning of "pesticides prescribed by trustworthy agrochemical pharmacists", not sales managers anymore.

  • The purpose of this study is to design textbook metadata as a basic task for building a textbook database. To this end, reading textbooks were defined as a category of textbooks, and a metadata development methodology was established through previous research. In order to ensure that bibliographically essential elements are not omitted, the catalog description elements of institutions that collect, accumulate, and service textbooks such as the National Library of Korea were investigated. The elements of Dublin Core, MODS, and KEM were mapped to derive elements suitable for describing textbooks. Finally, a set of textbook metadata elements consisting of 14 elements in three categories - bibliography, context, and textbook characteristics were presented by adding publication type, genre, and curriculum period elements. The 14 elements are titles, authors, publications, formats, identification sign, languages, locations, subject names, annotation, genres, table of contents, subjects, curriculum period, and curriculum information. In this study, we contributed to this field by discussing how to organize textbook resources with national knowledge resources, and in future studies, we proposed to evaluate usability by applying metadata elements to actual textbooks and revise and supplement them according to the evaluation results.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the perception and the knowledge of the Korean traditional foods in elementary school students. For the investigation, 373 fifth-grade elementary school students in Incheon were surveyed by a questionnaire, and the data were analized by the SPSS 10.0 program. The result showed that 85% of the surveyed schoolchildren showed the interest in the Korean traditional foods. It also revealed that female students are more interested in the traditional food than male students and the children of the career woman are more interested than those of the housewives. As for the motive of their interest, 39.7% of the subjects answered 'through mass media'. Male students and the children of the housewives got the interest through their mother, and female students and the children of the career woman got the interest through their hobby of cooking food. Among the traditional foods, 76.4% of the children designated kimchi as the most proud traditional food. As for the reasons of reducing traditional food use, 39.9% of students responded because of 'not-tasty' and 28.7% of students replied because of 'not enough time to cook'. But 62.2% of the subjects thought the traditional foods should be more used in the future. As for the succession and development of the traditional foods, 33.8% of the subjects said it should be carried out by the family. The basic knowledge score of the traditional foods was 5.78 on a scale of 10, which showed relatively low level. The lower their basic knowledge, the less their interest in the traditional foods was. The samgyetang, ogokbap and bindaetteok were the most perceived traditional foods. The cheonggukjang, nabakgimchi and jindallaehwajeon were the foods they had seen, but the they didnot have heard or seen the others. Among the traditional foods, susugyeongdan, jindallaehwajeon and dasik were more perceived by the schoolchildren in the rural area than those in the urban area. The jindallaehwajeon and dasik were more perceived by female students than by male students. Therefore, in order to make elementary schoolchildren take the traditional foods with pride by increasing their perception and knowledge of them, the family should give them many opportunities to eat traditional foods. The school also should try to establish a cooperative relationship to the family of schoolchilderen and use more Korean traditional foods in the school's meal program. Furthermore, the society's concern and support are necessary and also the role of mass media, which have great influence on children, is important.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the change in the classes of the beginning science teachers through a cooperative mentoring program that induces the practice of reflective thinking. Participants in this study included three mentor-teachers, two teachers in doctorate or masters courses, one university professor, and three mentee-teachers who had less than four years of teaching experience. We collected data such as video recordings of mentee-teachers' classes and transcription, lesson plans, recording of one-on-one mentoring and transcription, mentor's and mentee's journals, and RTOP class observation reports. RTOP was used for the class analysis, and the cognition and changes in mentee-teachers' classes were determined from their journal entries and one-on-one mentoring interview materials. According to mentee-teachers' recognition of changes in their classes during the mentoring program, they themselves recognized their teacher-centered teaching styles, misconception, and lack of content knowledge. Furthermore, there were changes in the mentee-teachers' classes through their reflective practice and improvement. Based on the result of this study, however, the teachers' reflection was not all accompanied with reflective practice even if the beginner science teachers made some partial changes in reflective practice by reflection. This means that it is hard to instill a reflective practice in mentee-teachers through mentoring in a short period. Therefore, we consider that more systematic and long-term mentoring is necessary for beginner science teachers.

  • The purpose of this study is to search for the factors that influence students' understanding of the nature of science through the experience of the cognitive processes of authentic open inquiries. The freshmen of a science high school practiced authentic open inquiries reflecting epistemological characteristics of authentic science. The case study was conducted with four focus students who were successful or unsuccessful at learning the nature of science during the authentic open inquiry activity. Questions that the focus students asked during the inquiries as well as students' answers to pre- and post-VNOS (C type) were analysed, and then elaborated in the semi-structured interview. The findings suggest that open inquiry activities provide the inquiry contexts that help science high school students to understand the nature of science, and that the characteristics of students' cognition influence the understanding of the nature of science. For instance, designing experiments with their own research questions had an influence on the students' understanding about the scientific methods and the diversity of research types, and drawing conclusions from their own data made students experience scientific reasoning. In addition, the experience of collecting anomalous data helped students to understand the role of inferences in generating scientific knowledge and the creative nature of scientific knowledge. In this inquiry context, the reflective thinking that came from proactive discussion among students, made students think about the validity of the designing experiments and interpreting data, and helped them to understand the uncertain nature of reasoning and the diverse nature of scientific methods. Moreover, divergent thinking linked to analogical thinking helped students to understand the creative nature of science.
