  • We investigated student's characteristics in each educational achievement level using the results of the NAEA (National Assessment of Educational Achievement) in 2009, 2010, and 2011 for Grade 6 students, and compared the characteristics between elementary and middle school students. The analysis of representative items for each educational achievement level of elementary and middle school students revealed that (a) advanced level students from both elementary and middle school could exactly understand the achievement criteria of the curriculum, (b) proficient level students from both elementary and middle school were understanding the achievement criteria of the curriculum superficially, for example, they could not understand concepts exactly but could memorize terms, and so should have compensational education under situations that ask for short answer or essay type items instead of multiple choice items, and (c) basic level students from both elementary and middle school almost could not understand the achievement criteria of curriculum, and so should have compensational education under situations that only deal with a simple situation. Science concepts treated in science curriculum are hierarchically organized by level of school, and simple compensational education for the students of below basic level will not solve learning deficits in science education. Differentiated education by educational achievement should be largely expanded instead.

  • This study aimed at examining the characteristics of the Korean home economics achievement standards at secondary education level, and comparing with those of U.S. home economics national standards. The specific research questions were as follows. First, the characteristics of Korean and U.S. achievement standards were examined respectively. Second, the standards of the two countries were examined in terms of the grades involved, development areas, specification level, sequence of courses, and format of statements, adopting the analysis framework of Lee, Jang, and Park(2012). Third, the achievement standards of the two countries for specific content areas, i.e. 'understanding adolescents' and 'understanding family' were compared in terms of the styles and format of statements. The findings suggest that in developing the Korean achievement standards, integration with the curriculum and detailed and specific statements are important to facilitate adoption at schools. The results of the comparison with the U.S. national standards indicates that it is important to emphasize academic rationale to home economics as a subject by clearly presenting the concepts, contents, and categories. Also, the standards will need to be stated in specific terms to allow practices and evaluations, rather than in terms that reflect value judgments.

  • In this study, we examined students' science academic achievement through an analysis of the national assessment of educational achievement(NAEA) from 2015 to 2018 when the 2009 revised curriculum was applied. This study analyzed achievement average scores by gender and region and also analyzed the trend of the rate of achievement level in order to understand the characteristics of students' academic achievement. In addition, we analyzed the characteristics of the affective aspect using a survey of students' attitudes (confidence, interest, value, and willingness to learn) toward science. The main findings are as follows; First, the average science score shows a tendency to decrease year by year at the middle school level. Second, when analyzed by achievement level, the decline in the advanced group was large, and the rate of the below basic group increased. Third, comparisons of the average achievement scores by gender, female students' scores were generally high and the difference in achievement scores between male and female students tended to increase. Fourth, a characteristic gap was found between regional scales that increased in the advanced group. The results of a questionnaire on students' attitudes show that the four constructs of the students' attitudes had a significant correlation with the average achievement scores. In addition, the mean and positive response rates on the confidence, interest, and value of science in the above proficiency group increased but decreased in the below basic group. These results can be used as basic data for revising the curriculum, improving teaching and learning, and establishing educational policies.

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the quality of understanding and implementation for teachers implementing the 2009 revised elementary science curriculum achievement standards. To achieve this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 participants, and the qualitative contents method was used to analyze interview contents. According to the interview contents, the results of this study can be described as a phenomenon that teachers implementing achievement standards regarded achievement standards as usual, while focusing on evaluation in school. To make clear of this phenomenon, we classified it into two main dimensions. One is the understanding of teachers by implementing the 2009 Revised National Curriculum achievement standards for elementary school science curriculum, the other is its application. Teachers regarded achievement standards as a criterion, but did not have much attention to it during class time. Furthermore, teachers point out the problems caused by lacking available support materials and the material about core achievement standards. When teachers implemented achievement standards, they prefer to give class to students based on textbooks rather than achievement standards, and they usually use it as evaluation criterion. Based on the results of this study, there were three suggestions and they are as follows: First, it is necessary to improve teachers' professionalism on curriculum and it is a must for teachers to have more concerns about achievement standards; Second, to develop accessible support materials for teachers; Third, to improve curriculum implementation systems.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that affected achievement of socially succeeded people, and to draw ways to improve gifted education. To do this, we interviewed 60 achievers. The interview was administrated as semi-structured deep interview about 6 areas - education, major, family and parent, personal relationship, leisure time activity, achievement and motivation of success. The results showed that achievers were active students during their school days. They thought differentiated education and student-centered lessons are important. Many achievers answered they do not have any personal mentee, and decision of majors and education should be matched with the perception of one's potential and interest. Exercises, music, and reading books were strongly suggested as leisure time activities, and the key inner factors for success were curiosity and self-confidence. Beneficiaries of gifted education perceived their experience of gifted education had a positive influence on their achievement. Based on the these results, ways to improve gifted education were discussed.

  • The purpose of this paper is the development of course data models and learning achievement computation algorithms for enabling the course-embedded assessment(CEA), which is essential of competency-based education in higher education. The previous works related CEA have weakness in the development of the systematic solution for CEA computation. In this paper, we propose data models and algorithms to implement competency-based assessment system. Our data models are composed of a layered architecture of learning outcomes, learning modules and activities, and an associative matrix of learning outcomes and activities. The proposed methods can be applied to the development of the course-embedded assessment system as core modules. We evaluated the effectiveness of our proposed models through applying the models to a practical course, Java Programing. From the result of the experiments we found that our models can be used in the assessment system as a core module.

  • This study is focused on the trends in education and polices for women in Korea. First, historical background of education for women in Korea revealed that a biased view of education for women was deeply rooted. Next, several findings such as international comparison of performance on the PISA, TIMSS, and National Assessment including gender differences especially in Mathematical and Science performance were analyzed. In international assessments, female students perform better in reading literacy, but still fall behind male students in mathematical and scientific literacy, and the gap between the genders are wider than most OECD countries. The change in status of women in contemporary Korea is examined focusing on educational system and women's educational and vocational performance, etc. Additionally, policies planned by Ministry of Science and Technology which show the many execution plans for training and supporting female professionals were presented. Finally, possible reasons for gender differences in educational performance is examined and some suggestions are provided to reduce the gender gap in mathematical and scientific literacy of Korean students.
