  • Even though patterns and correspondence serve a fundamental basis of function for elementary students, there has been lack of research in this field. This study explored prior studies to extract the key instructional elements on how to teach patterns and correspondence. This study then analyzed the unit of 'patterns and correspondence' in the mathematics textbooks in terms of four key instructional elements (i.e., relation to real-life contexts, diversity of pattern tasks, exploration for a correspondence relationship, and teaching variables). The results of this study showed that topics dealing with patterns and correspondence were represented with relation to real-life contexts but diversity of pattern tasks and exploration for a correspondence relationship were needed to be further considered in the textbooks. Another noticeable result was that teaching variables was not explicitly addressed in the textbooks. Based on these results, this study provides textbook writers with implications on what to further consider in dealing with patterns and correspondence.

  • This study compared the characteristics of an experiment f or determining whether gas occupies space presented in elementary school science textbooks to examine the validity of the experiment, identify and improve problems in its presentation, and verify its effectiveness. This study interviewed third-year elementary school teachers who had experience teaching this experiment to students. Based on teachers' opinions and observations, this study identified issues with the current experiment, developed an improved experiment, and determined its effectiveness. Through this analysis, three key findings emerged. First, the study found that the original experiment on gases was presented in the same or highly similar manner in 5 of 7 textbooks (71.4%). Thus, while various textbooks have been developed with the aim of promoting diversity and creativity in scientific literature, most experiments presented in these books are identical. Second, the existing experiment was not suitable for its target audience (third-year elementary school students) and was difficult to observe directly. The interviewed teachers also deemed the validity of the experiment to be considerably low. Finally, the original experiment was improved; this improved version was determined to be highly valid, showing a statistically significant difference compared with the original experiment. The improved experiment was effective for students as it involved activities suitable for their intellectual level and was directly observable through the senses. Thus, the study analyzed and improved an existing science experiment f or elementary students, providing insights into the 2022 revised science authorized textbooks and implications for future textbook development.

  • This paper analyzed the contents and instructional methods of various plane figures presented mainly in a series of elementary mathematics textbooks on the basis of the analysis of related contents in the 2007 revised national mathematics curriculum. As such, this paper provided detailed analyses of how textbooks would implement the vision and intention of the curriculum, how the definition of each plane figure in the textbooks might be different from its mathematical definition, and how textbooks would introduce each plane figure. It is expected that the issues and suggestions stemming from this analysis will be informative in designing new instructional materials.

  • This study investigated the effects of problem-solving competency of students when they studied with digital textbook contents and digital inking in collaborative learning. The experimental group solved the math problems using basic digital textbook contents and digital inking while the control group solved the math problems using basic digital textbook contents alone. The result of analysis and comparison is as follows, the experimental group with basic digital textbook contents and digital inking showed more improved problem-solving competency than that of the control group with basic digital textbook contents alone, the experimental group showed recorded a higher satisfactory level than that of the control group.

  • We aim to investigate whether the activities in the 2015 revised elementary English textbooks are reflected in terms of Multiple Intelligences. Specifically, we analyze three types of activities including project, game, and cultural activities in three types of the 5th grade English textbooks. Additionally, we compare the differences in the Multiple Intelligences according to three different publishers. The data includes three different sorts of fifth-grade English textbook activities. We found that verbal-linguistic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and visual-spatial intelligence are heavily involved in project activities. Verbal-linguistic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, visual-spatial intelligence, and kinesthetic intelligence are all utilized in game activities. Lastly, cultural activities demonstrate verbal-linguistic and visual-spatial intelligence. In consideration of the diversity of students, we suggest that English textbooks need to consider diverse and well balanced approach to incorporating Multiple Intelligences in order to make the textbooks to meet the needs of the diversity of learners.

  • This paper analyzes the activities for (fraction) ${\times}$(fraction) in Korean elementary textbooks focusing on the connection between visual models and the algorithm. New Korean textbook attempts a new approach to use length model (as well as rectangular area model) for developing the standard algorithm for the multiplication of fractions, $\frac{a}{b}{\times}\frac{d}{c}=\frac{a{\times}d}{b{\times}c}$. However, activities with visual models in the textbook are not well connected to the algorithm. To bridge the gap between activities with models and the algorithm, distributive strategy should be emphasized. A wealth of experience of solving problems of fraction multiplication using the distributive strategy with visual models can serve as a strong basis for developing the algorithm for the multiplication of fractions.

  • We have analyzed affecting factors of boiling point measurement and proposed to improve these after identifying errors of boiling point experiment in 7th grade science textbooks of 2009 revised curriculum. In the result of analyzing affecting factor of boiling point measurement for nine kinds of science textbooks, we have identified six affecting factors like as types of thermometer, heating instrument, sealing or not of stopper, position of thermometer, shape of container, and volume ratio of material and container. When performing experiment of boiling point measurement, we identified the best results when heating with a hot plate, positioning thermo sensor of MBL near neck branch after filling and sopping 10% volumes of material in round bottom flask. Based on this result, we have compared nine kinds of 7th grade science textbooks and found many errors that must be corrected in most of textbooks. Therefore it should be improved the experiment of science textbooks to enhance the understanding of students and to prevent from misconceptions for boiling point measurement.

  • Problems in mathematics textbooks are very important because there is a high reliance on textbooks in elementary school mathematics classes and there is a strong belief that mathematics is to find the solution to problems. Considering this importance, we analyzed problems in elementary mathematics textbooks quantitatively and qualitatively. Concretely, problems of addition and subtraction with carry on in the range of two digit numbers in the mathematics textbooks from the 1st to the 2015 national revised curriculum were analyzed. As a result, the problems in each textbook were found to reveal important features of the textbook reflecting changes in curriculum and educational background. And the problem of textbooks has changed in the direction of enhancing students' reasoning, communication, and problem solving ability. Based on these results, we suggested several implications for dealing with problems in elementary mathematics textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze tasks reflected in Korean and US textbooks according to the mathematical modeling perspectives, and then to compare the diversity of learning opportunities given to students from both countries. For this, we analyzed mathematical modeling tasks of textbooks based on three aspects: mathematical modeling process, data, and expression. Results are as follows. First, with respect to modeling process, Korean textbook provides a high percentage of the task at all stages of modeling than US textbook. Second, with respect to data, both countries' textbooks have the highest percentage of matching task. Korean textbooks have a large gap in data characteristics by textbook. Third, with respect to expression, both countries' textbooks have the highest percentage of text and picture. Korean textbooks have a large gap in the type of expression than US textbooks, and some textbooks have no other expression except for text and picture. Fourth, tasks were analyzed by integrating the three features. The three features were not combined in various ways. It is necessary to diversify the integration of the three features.
