The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) with the traditional laboratory experiment on science classes in middle school. MBL tools were developed and applied for five experiment subjects chosen from middle school science textbook for MBL experiment classes, while usual experiment methods suggested in the textbook were used in traditional experiment classes. In order to evaluate the effects of MBL experiment class, achievement, graphic ability, science process skills, affective aspect related to science were tested before and after applying the MBL experiment. The result revealed that MBL experiment class was more effective than traditional experiment class in improving student's science achievement, science process skills, and graphic ability. The result also indicated that there was a significant difference between experiment and control group with regards to the effect on affective aspect related to science. From the above result, we can find the positive implication of applicability of MBL experiment as a new experiment tool at the early stage of introduction in a real context.
The purpose of this study was to analyze 'how STEAM activities affect students' science process skills and science-related attitudes'. For more accurate, we have set 31 sixth-grade students from Gyeong-gi Province as an experiment group, and another 31 as a comparative group. We developed a STEAM program based on the educational concepts: Creative Design and Emotional Touch. Through pre-post experiment design, we have introduced TSPS, and Test of Affective Aspects. For TSPS, the comparative group scored higher average grade before the process. After the process, however, the experiment group exceeded the other. The result was considerable enough to verify that the science process skills were bolstered through the STEAM program(p<.05), Similar result was derived regarding the science related attitude. Students in the comparative group originally showed higher degree of interest to science. When the STEAM program was carried out, the standing reversed. The increase in the number of science related attitude indicates the program valid(p<.001). Furthermore, when we asked the students who participated in the experiment how they recognized the STEAM activity, we received positive answers: they consider the program efficient and well suited to the class environment. Conclusively, the STEAM program was proven to be effective for improving science process skills and attitude, and was perceived affirmative.

This study aims to investigate the effect of inquiry-based biology program of pre-service science teachers' perceptions on the nature of science and their affective domain of science. For the study, sixty-seven pre-service science teachers were sampled from students who enrolled in the 'Biology Laboratory', Spring semester, 2011. The experimental group taught by inquiry-based experiment and control group by observation-based experiment were composed. At the beginning and end of semester, pre- and post-tests on the nature of science and affective domain of science were administered. The average scores of experimental group were higher than those of control group in the post-test of the nature of science, but there were no significant differences between both groups (p>.05). For the post-test results of both groups' affective domain of science, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores than the control group in self-efficacy in science, importance of science, and importance of science for careers (p<.01). The inquiry-based biology program did not influence pre-service science teachers' perception on the nature of science, while it was effective for positive changes on pre-service science teachers' affective domain of science.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of experimental learning using the small-scale chemistry (SSC) on high school students' academic achievement, scientific attitude and science-related attitude in high school chemistry I. For this study, two high school 2nd grade classes were divided into an experimental group and a control group. Experimental learning using the SSC in the experimental group, traditional experimental learning presented in the textbook in the control group were performed. The results showed that experimental learning using the SSC compared to traditional experimental learning was effective in improving academic achievement. The experimental learning also was effective in improving voluntary, patience, cooperativity in the scientific attitudes and social implications of science, attitude for science curriculum, attitude toward science in the science-related attitudes. Therefore, experimental learning using the SSC is necessary to actively utilize in high school chemistry curriculum.
We believe that science experiments in a laboratory are essential for science education. Scientific experiments begin with situations set by selecting and locating tools and reagents. and by proper experimental behavior, and thereafter situations are changed by natural laws and intermediate experimental behavior. While scientists and students do experiments, they build a cognitive model internally, do causal reasoning on the model to derive system behavior, and then learn scientific truth. We suggest not only a representation method for a 2-dimentional model and for ontological entities necessary in causal reasoning, but also an inferencing method to derive behavior. Chemistry experiments are chosen for the implementation. For the ontological entities, we consider experimental tools, reagents and their heirarchical structures, physics and chemistry natural laws, and functional abstraction knowledge. In order to show the usefulness of our methods, we have developed a program, called ACUArtificial Chemistry Laboratory), which provides an experiment environment where students can do non-predetermined experiments, and shows experiment려 system behavior similar to what happens in the same situation in a real world and descriptions about why it happens.

Two biology modules were developed previously for the purpose of improving creativity and scientific thinking of secondary school students. A hypothetical-deductive experimental procedure was reflected in the module when students themselves can perform a series of activities of making hypothesis and designing an experiment to solve the questions. They followed a series of scientific processes to determine some characteristics regarding plant pigments and the transport process of materials in living organisms. Four classes of 9th graders in'S' Science High School were divided into the experimental and the control group. The same contents of the modules were taught to the control group by the traditional experimental way. The students' creativity, scientific thinking, scientific inquiry skill and knowledge achievement were examined before and after the interventions. As results, the experimental groups showed more significant improvement on the areas of the students' creativity, scientific thinking, scientific inquiry skill and achievement than the control groups. Results indicated that the specially designed modules in terms of hypothetical-deductive experimental procedure were effective to improve science high school students' creativity and scientific thinking abilities.
The purpose of this study was to find out the factor that causes the difference on understanding the aim and perception of laboratory activities between teachers and students. For this study, in-depth interview was conducted for sixth grade students and teachers of 10 classes. The questionnaire of the interview can be divided into 3 sections: the aim of laboratory activities, whether teachers present the aim of laboratory activities, the method of laboratory class progress and the evaluation method. The factors that bring about the difference between the teachers and the students on perception of the aim are the absence of proper guidance on the aim of laboratory activities, the laboratory classes that the progress out of teachers' intention and evaluation method that is the performed without any relationship with the aim of the laboratory activities. Because the teacher-intended aim of laboratory activities is not properly presented, students can't percept the accurate aim. Even though teachers recognize the importance of the improvement of science process skill acquired through laboratory activities, this is not delivered practically in the class and students also can't percept the importance of science process skill.
This paper is focused on the development of sea wave experimental module for the science gifted students and the potential of its application in high school earth science. Sea wave experimental module for the gifted was characteristics by five phases: Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Expansion. Subjects were 16 gifted students, who were 10th graders and have been taught in the adjacent Education Institute for the gifted of Education Districts, Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education The changes of inquiry ability and knowledge achievement were analyzed according to analysis of experimental report and pre-test and post-test. Experimental module for the gifted was very effective on inquiry skills as follows: control of variables, experimental designing, and selecting tools of experimental process. And also it was positively effective on achievement. The result of this study suggested that experimental module for the science gifted should be very meaningfully to improve scientific ability of them, and the development and application of experimental module for the science gifted be needed for them.
