The purpose of this study was to analyze the use of analogies in high school science textbooks in explaining abstract science concepts. For this study, the analogies used in high school science textbooks of the 7th science curriculum were analyzed. The analogies were classified into the six following types: the nature of shared attributes, representation, analogy/target abstraction, number of analogies, with and without specified use of analogy, and casual relations. A total of 189 analogies were found in the 7th science textbooks. This means that 16.9 analogies were used for each book. In analyzing the analogies, we found some analogies were appropriate, while others were ambiguous and inadequate in explaining the various science concepts. The number of analogies used varied considerably according to the publishing company and the science domain. For more effective understanding of various science concepts, it is necessary to develop more analogies and research the application of analogy.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning achievement of students who has taken the play-based and activity-oriented programs in the class. These new science class programs and instrument to measure student learning achievement were developed for the "Constellation Favorite" lesson of 4th grade students and Those are verified by science education experts, teachers in serve. The subjects of this study consist of 121 students in four classes who were selected on the basis of midterm examination result before teaching treatment. They were divided into two categories with two classes per each category, one class for experimental group and the other class for control group. The experimental groups were given five classes including five play-based class programs. The control groups were given five conventional instruction-type classes. The students were given questionnaires to test their interest ratings. The results show about 17% increase of their learning achievement with (p<0.005) by independent sample T-test method and 40% increase of interest rating in play-based class sample compared to normal class sample. In conclusion, the play-based science class program is found to enhance the students' learning achievement and to interest the students more effectively.

The study developed and analyzed programs that incorporate observable worldviews-based science education and education for sustainable development(ESD) in science classes to emphasize integration with the background of the times and achieve effective goals of science education aimed at cultivating scientific literacy. As a result of applying the program to actual high school students, students were able to see the transition to the worldviews of ecology in the process of considering various values and making decisions by identifying their own values. Students' worldviews were found to be at odds during the process of identifying their worldviews and approaching values in various aspects of the class due to the conflicting values of each curriculum and teacher worldviews. In the area of individual values, the worldviews should be applied in science education and understanding of the worldviews of teachers and curriculum contents is also required. Through this study, we hope that access to the area of individual values represented by the worldview in science education will help students change fundamental.

The purpose of this study is to construct a Teachers' Learning Community (TLC) with three teachers from the same school and to develop a joint teaching plan for students through the TLC. The conclusions from this study are as follows: The TLC with the same grade helps teachers to implement STEAM classes, where teachers overcame difficulties of STEAM lessons and successfully implemented them. Teachers in this study expressed difficulties of STEAM lessons including lack of time, difficulties of STEAM lesson implementation, and difficulties of developing a good STEAM lesson. Teachers worked together to develop a common teaching plan, to overcome the burden of teaching, and to plan better lessons through discussions and cross-checking. In addition, teachers newly discovered difficulties of lesson implementation as they watch each other teaching using a joint lesson plan. Teachers will conduct a better lesson as they improve these difficulties, where a better lesson means having students reach learning goals and learn from the lesson. Teachers in TLC felt that their lesson improved and they themselves growing through a series of courses of watching and learning each other's lessons.

One of the important competencies in knowledge and information society is the competency of Knowledge information processing. This is closely related to science education and described as one of the core competencies in the 2015 national curriculum revision. Even with a general agreement of the educational necessity of this competency, its practice in class depends mostly on teachers' will. Therefore, we surveyed science teachers' perceptions and classroom condition about the competency of Knowledge information processing, and we analyzed the questionnaires of 64 middle and high school teachers in Seoul and interviewed three teachers. As a result, all teachers shared the importance of Knowledge information processing competency and explained it in terms of social paradigm and goal of the subject. However, there were not many cases of actual practice in class. The teachers answered that time for Knowledge information processing competency is not enough in class and they also lack of PCK on this competency. About half of the teachers had experiences in teacher training about Knowledge information processing competency but most of their experiences are related to information utilization literacy. The importance of Knowledge information processing competency was very high in three factors (collection, analyzation, and utilization), among which information analysis was the highest. Middle school teachers showed higher scores in most questions even though the differences were not significant, and high school teachers showed higher scores in the importance of information sources at a significant level. In order to cultivate competencies, it is necessary to expand the meaning of science inquiry so as to cover this competency and to consider ways of linking with other subjects and develop methods of teaching and learning.
The purpose of this study is to develope and apply NIE programs related to sub-chapter 'The Change of Weather and Circulation of Water' in 2nd grade science text book of middle school, and thereby to investigate the effects of NIE approach on science-related attitude and teaming achievement of students, and interaction between treatment methods and students' learning ability. Subjects consisted of 2nd grade students of four classes in a girls middle school located at the southern part of Seoul. Four classes were divided into experimental and control groups by two classes randomly. The experimental groups have been instructed on the related-general concepts for six times and then received seven NIE programs developed by researcher for seven times. The control groups have received the instruction through the conventional teaching method. The NIE learning has been progressed following the steps using in the Iowa Chautaugua Program, e.g. invite, explore, propose explanation and solutions, and take action. NIE programs, e.g. project studying, topic studying and a crossword puzzle have been developed and applied using 'science first' approach of the STS instruction. Twenty questions related to social implications of science and leisure interest in science within seven frameworks of TOSRA have been used in this study as an evaluation instrument of science-related attitude. Learning achievement has been evaluated using an instrument developed by researcher. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. (1) NIE approach was more effective in progressing learning achievement of middle school students than conventional teaching method (p<.01). (2) Experimental groups show statistically significant improvement on science-related attitude than control groups (p<.01). There were no significant interactions between treatment methods and students' learning ability on learning achievement and leisure interest in science. The NIE approach were more effective than the conventional one on social implications of science, especially to low ability students.
This study explored the effects of pre-service elementary teachers' inquiries into science class dilemmas. By closely examining the characteristics of the pre-service teachers' inquiry processes and changes in their educational decisions, the effectiveness of using dilemmas as part of teacher education was determined. Twenty fourth-year university pre-service teachers participated and conducted inquiries into science class dilemmas over seven weeks. Based on pre- and post-questionnaires, KWHL tables, inquiry reports, discussions, and group class presentations, the major factors that influence the pre-service teacher's decision-making changes were extracted. The pre-service teachers found the science inquiry process meaningful when exploring the science topics covered in the dilemmas, and claimed that elementary school students would be able to engage in meaningful science explorations if they learned science through inquiry. Furthermore, the pre-service teachers explored the thinking processes and background knowledge of the students in different ways. Documents such as teacher's guides and the curriculum were examined and the students' thought processes were identified through interviews with the teachers and students, which were found to reflect their educational decision-making. Moreover, it was recognized by the pre-service teachers that depending on the situation, alternative teaching methods were possible. The focus on the unstructured dilemma problems provided the pre-service teachers with problem-solving situations that triggered scientific inquiry and exploration of student thinking and revealed the complexity of science teaching and learning. Based on these results, the teacher education implications for using dilemma cases are discussed.
The science teachers' perceptions and the status of formative assessment in science teaching were identified through a questionnaire. The majority of teachers thought that the most important goal of assessment in education was to identify to what extent pupils achieved learning objectives. They suggested that formative assessment was the most appropriate method regardless of the purposes of assessment. They thought that formative assessment was an assessment carried out at the end of lesson to identify to what extent pupils achieved learning objectives. The teachers stressed the need for formative assessment to identify what pupils achieved. But they carried out formative assessment about once a week and there were very few teachers carrying out formative assessment during the lesson. They responded that it was difficult to carry out formative assessment because of large class size, lack of time and difficulty in preparation. And they used the information from formative assessment to judge the level of attainment.

This study investigated the effects of the instructions using analogies in learning the concept of saturated solution by the analogy presentation types and the verbal learning styles upon the mapping understanding, the mapping errors, and the perceptions of the instruction. Fifth graders (N=123) at an elementary school were selected and assigned to VA (n=63) and VPA (n=60) groups. As a pretest, a test on the verbal learning style was administered. The students in the VA group learned the target concept with a verbal analogy, while those in the VPA group learned it with a verbal/pictorial analogy. After the students learned it, a mapping understanding test was administered. The students in the VPA group also administered the test on the perceptions of the instruction and some of them were interviewed in depth. The results revealed that the scores of the students with strong verbal learning preference in the VPA group were significantly lower than those in the VA group in the mapping understanding test. However, the scores of the students with weak verbal learning preference were not significantly different between the two groups. Five types of mapping errors were identified: failure to map, mismapping, rash mapping, impossible mapping, and mapping of a surficial feature. According to students' verbal learning styles, there were some differences in the frequencies of mapping errors in the two groups. Many students in the VPA group, regardless of their verbal learning styles, had positive perceptions of the instruction in various cognitive and motivational aspects. However, some of them also pointed out a few difficulties of the instruction. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
