  • The present work extends the recent variational formulation to more general time-dependent problems. Thus, based upon recent works of variational formulation in dynamics and pure heat diffusion in the context of the extended framework of Hamilton's principle, formulation for fully coupled thermoelasticity is developed first, then, with thermoelasticity-poroelasticity analogy, poroelasticity formulation is provided. For each case, energy conservation and energy dissipation properties are discussed in Fourier transform domain.

  • Volcanic rocks formed from magma near the earth surface commonly show vesicular structures due to exsolution of gaseous phases in magma. The distinction and the amount of vesicles are greatly various, but there are few researches on the effect of volume percentage of vesicles on the mechanical properties. In this study, mechanical characteristics of volcanic rocks in relation to the porosity are investigated through experimental tests with Jeju basalt. Two methods (the buoyancy method and the caliper method) are adopted for measuring porosity. And unconfined compressive strength, elastic modulus, tensile strength, and elastic wave velocity are plotted against porosity in order to propose the empirical relations after the regression analysis. Also, unconfined compressive strength and the elastic modulus in relation to the elastic wave velocity are proposed with the analysis. In the case of vesicular rocks with more than 5% porosity, it is found that the buoyancy method provides more accurate estimation of porosity than the caliper method. The unconfined compressive strength, the elastic modulus, and the elastic wave velocity decrease curvilinearly with increasing in porosity. Also, the unconfined compressive strength and the elastic modulus increase linearly with increasing in elastic wave velocity.

  • Rock physics serves as a useful tool for seismic reservoir characterization and monitoring by providing quantitative relationships between rock properties and seismic data. Rock physics models can predict effective moduli for reservoirs with different mineral components and pore fluids from well-log data. The distribution of reservoirs and fluids for the entire seismic volume can also be estimated from rock physics models. The first part of this report discusses the Voigt, Reuss, and Hashin-Shtrikman bounds for effective elastic moduli and the Gassmann fluid substitution. The second part reviews various contact models for moderate- to high-porosity sands. In the third part, constant-cement model, known to work well for the sand that gradually loses porosity with deteriorating sorting, was applied to the well-log data from an oil field in the North Sea. Lastly, the rock physics template constructed from the constant-cement model and the results from the prestack inversion of 2D seismic data were combined to predict the lithology and fluid types for the sand reservoir of this oil field.

  • A coupled T-H-M(Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical) analysis was carried out for KENTEX (KAERI Engineering-scale T-H-M Experiment for Engineered Barrier System), which is a facility for validating the coupled T-H-M behavior in the engineered barrier system of the Korean reference HLW(high-level waste) disposal system. The changes of temperature, water saturation, and stress were estimated based on the coupled T-H-M analysis, and the influence of the types of mechanical constitutive material laws was investigated by using elastic model, poroelastic model, and poroelastic-plastic model. The analysis was done using ABAQUS, which is a commercial finite element code for general purposes. From the analysis, it was observed that the temperature in the bentonite increased sharply for a couple of days after heating the heater and then slowly increased to a constant value. The temperatures at all locations were nearly at a steady state after about 37.5 days. In the steady state, the temperature was maintained at $90^{\circ}C$ at the interface between the heater and the bentonite and at about $70^{\circ}C$ at the interface between the bentonite and the confining cylinder. The variation of the water saturation with time in bentonite was almost same independent of the material laws used in the coupled T-H-M processes. By comparing the saturation change of T-H-M and that of H-M(Hydro-Mechanical) processes using elastic and poroelastic material mod31 respectively, it was found that the degree of saturation near the heater from T-H-M calculation was higher than that from the coupled H-M calculation mainly because of the thermal flux, which seemed to speed up the saturation. The stresses in three cases with different material laws were increased with time. By comparing the stress change in H-M calculation using poroelasetic and poroelasetic-plastic model, it was possible to conclude that the influence of saturation on the stress change is higher than the influence of temperature. It is, therefore, recommended to use a material law, which can model the elastic-plastic behavior of buffer, since the coupled T-H-M processes in buffer is affected by the variation of void ratio, thermal expansion, as well as swelling pressure.

  • In order to estimate the hydrocarbon reserves, the porosity of the reservoir must be determined. The porosity of the area without a well is generally calculated by extrapolating the porosity logs measured at wells. However, if not only well logs but also seismic data exist on the same site, the more accurate pseudo porosity log can be obtained through artificial neural network technique by extracting the relations between the seismic data and well logs at the site. In this study, we have developed a module which creates pseudo porosity logs by using the polynomial neural network method. In order to obtain more accurate pseudo porosity logs, we selected the seismic attributes which have high correlation values in the correlation analysis between the seismic attributes and the porosity logs. Through the training procedure between selected seismic attributes and well logs, our module produces the correlation weights which can be used to generate the pseudo porosity log in the well free area. To verify the reliability and the applicability of the developed module, we have applied the module to the field data acquired from F3 Block in the North Sea and compared the results to those from the probabilistic neural network method in a commercial program. We could confirm the reliability of our module because both results showed similar trend. Moreover, since the pseudo porosity logs from polynomial neural network method are closer to the true porosity logs at the wells than those from probabilistic method, we concluded that the polynomial neural network method is effective for the data sets with insufficient wells such as F3 Block in the North Sea.

  • The paper discusses a data processing methodology that derives a three dimensional porosity volume information from the 3-D seismic dataset. The methodology consists of preprocessing and inversion procedures. The purpose of the preprocessing is balancing the amplitudes of seismic traces by using reflectivity series derived from sonic and density logs. There are eight sonic logs are available in the study area; therefore, we can compute only 8 balance functions. The balance function for every seismic trace was derived from these 8 balance functions by kriging. In order to derive a wide-band acoustic impedance --similar to the one can be derived from a sonic log- from a band-limited reflection seismogram, we need to recover missing low- and high-frequency information of the seismic trace. For that Purpose we use the autoregressive method.

  • The dynamic properties of soils are affected by parameters like, gradation characteristics, void ratio, confining pressure, etc. . This study mainly investigated experimentally the effect of gradation on the dynamic properties of sands with the effect of void ratio and confining pressure. Test results showed that shear modulus/damping ratio was increased/decreased with the decrease of void ratio and with the increase of confining pressure. When the fine content increased, shear modulus/damping ratio was decreased/increased. This study explained this phenomenon by the concept of the "effective number of contacts" and the "dead space".ot;dead space".uot;.

  • Determination of dynamic shear modulus of soil was made by measuring directly the velocity of ultrasonic shear waves transmitted through the specimen. The PUNDIT, a generator and detector of ultrasonic waves, has been used to measure the propagation velocity. Forty -six tests of compacted soil at seven different void ratios and seven varying degrees of saturation with four types of materials were made in this study. The primary importance in this study was the investigation of the relations among the para meters which influenced G-modulus, As a results of analysis, the dynamic shear modulus of soil tends to decrease with an increase of void ratio, and also it is affected by soil types. In case of using PUNDIT, the proper range of the specimen length is from 5cm to 8cm. And the degree of saturation doesn't affect the dyn- amic shear modulus of soil.
