This study aims to develop an ecoregion classification using a multi-hierarchy of environmental factors for spatial patterns in the capacities and potentials of ecological systems in mountain regions. To achieve the objectives, we describe the spatial distribution of environmental factors and identify the multi-hierarchy of these factors using spatial statistics. Lastly, we assess ecosystem-units using both a forest type map (yung & kung) and a forest soil map in order to present a ecoregion classification. This study was performed at a $1,168km^2$ area in Gangwon-do, Korea. Sedimentary rocks, particularly limestone (36.6%) exist in high proportions in the research area. While higher mountains are present in the north and central Korean peninsula, plain areas show large proportions along Odae and Pyeongchang river. In a multi-hierarchy, geology and elevation are identified as upper levels and landform classification (surface curvature, upslope area) is considered as a lower level. 'Geology+elevation+landform' shows equally higher ${\chi}^2$ values than that of other classifications and we map ecoregions based on this result. Uniqueness of environmental characteristics in the research area such as high proportions of sedimentary rocks and higher elevations influences our ecoregion classification. We are looking forward to considering this study as an effective approach to integrating various ecological themes for mountain ecosystem management.

The continuous observations for atmospheric aerosols were conducted during 3 years (2009 to 2011) by using Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) multi-wavelength Raman lidar at Gwangju, Korea ($35.10^{\circ}N$, $126.53^{\circ}E$). The aerosol depolarization ratios calculated from lidar data were used to identify the Asian dust layer. The optical properties of Asian dust layer were different according to its vertical distribution. In order to investigate the difference between the optical properties of each individual dust layers, the transport pathway and the transport altitude of Asian dust were analyzed by Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. We consider that the variation of optical properties were influenced not only their transport pathway but also their transport height when it passed over anthropogenic pollution source regions in China. The lower particle depolarization ratio values of $0.12{\pm}0.01$, higher lidar ratio of $67{\pm}9sr$ and $68{\pm}9sr$ at 355 nm and 532 nm, respectively, and higher ${\AA}ngstr\ddot{o}m$ exponent of $1.05{\pm}0.57$ which are considered as the optical properties of pollution were found. In contrast with this, the higher particle depolarization ratio values of $0.21{\pm}0.09$, lower lidar ratio of $48{\pm}5sr$ and $46{\pm}4sr$ at 355 nm and 532 nm, respectively, and lower ${\AA}ngstr\ddot{o}m$ exponent of $0.57{\pm}0.24$ which are considered as the optical properties of dust were found. We found that the degree of mixing of anthropogenic pollutant aerosols in mixed Asian dust govern the variation of optical properties of Asian dust and it depends on their altitude when it passed over the polluted regions over China.

This paper deals with the classification and distribution of geomorphic surfaces and analysis on effects of geomorphic processes on the landforms in the inaccessable DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) to Wonsan Bay of East Sea coast of Chugaryeong Rift Valley, Central Korea. DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and Landsat images are used for the above anlaysis. The geomorphic surfaces are classified by TPI (Topographical Position Index) for the analysis of the convexity and concavity calculated using topographical elements such as elevation, steepness, and relief. In the Chugayreong Valley, 10 geomorphic surfaces are classified as steep valley, shallow valley, upland drainage, U-shaped valley, plain, open slope, upper slope, local ridge, midslope ridge, and high ridge. Zonal Statistics presents average characteristics of geomorphological processes of surfaces by the relationships between bedrock and relief, surface and relief, and between surface and NDVI. So, these analysis can help to understand geomorphological process such as dissection of lava plateau and watershed divide evolution.
We have studied the orientational characteristics of microcrack frequency, it's length and density in Tertiary crystalline tuff from the northeastern part of the Gyeongsang Basin. 134 sets of microcracks on horizontal surfaces of 3 rock samples from Heunghae-eup were distinguished by enlarged photomicrographs of the thin sections. The variability in patterns among microcrack length-frequency histograms for three rock samples from different altitudes were derived. The pattern of histograms changes progressively from negative exponential form to log-normal form in proportion to altitude. The distribution pattern for rock sample no.1 from lower altitude shows the broad length distribution characterized by higher mean and median, and higher standard deviation. Meanwhile, this distribution pattern corresponds with characteristics of joint length distribution in sedimentary rocks of the lower part of the Gyeongsang Supergroup. The occurrence frequency of shorter microcracks increases toward both NW and NE directions from the $N0{\sim}10^{\circ}W$, with the dominant direction of $N80{\sim}90^{\circ}W$ and $N80{\sim}90^{\circ}E$, respectively. This distribution pattern represents the relative differences in formation timing among microcrack sets and the result of the new initiation of shorter microcracks. Meanwhile, the longest microcracks within $N60{\sim}70^{\circ}W$($L_{max}$:1.18 mm) and $N0{\sim}10^{\circ}W$($L_{max}$:0.80 mm) directions are seen, but this kind of microcracks are very limited in number. Whole domain of the directional angle($\theta$)-frequency(N), length(L) and density($\rho$) chart can be divided into five sections in terms of phases of the distribution of related curves. From the distribution chart, density curve shows five distinct peaks in the WNW-ESE($N70{\sim}80^{\circ}W$), NS~NNE-SSW($N0{\sim}10^{\circ}W$, $N10{\sim}20^{\circ}E$), ENE-WSW($N50{\sim}60^{\circ}E$), and nearly EW($N80{\sim}90^{\circ}E$) directions, respectively. Especially, main directions of faults correspond with the directional angle showing high density. Consequently, these distribution patterns of density curve reflect the representative maximum principal stress orientations suggested in previous studies.
Geomorphological properties for the phylite-derived soil were examined to relate processes to four landscape positions, shoulder, backslope, footslope, and toeslope in Chungbuk. The distribution of Ogcheon-geology system was 216 thousand ha in South Korea. 2 orders, 3 suborders, 4 great groups, 5 subgroups, and 9 series were mapped. Soil color was interlocked by landscape. Soil color index values and $Fe_2O_3$ contents increased with soil-drainge class. Silt/clay and Ca/Mg ratios tended to narrow wish elevation and decreased with depth. Therefore, profile development or age on the landscape position was shoulder>backslope>footslope>toeslope. Color index(C2m) has a sighificant correlation with $Fe_2O_3$, in soil profile($r=0.777^{**}$). Pedologic type was continuity/discontinuity and soil property changes of depth<12cm would have a continous function.
The objective of this study is to test the flood forecasting capability of TOPMODEL on a single watershed in Korea. The selected study area is the Soyang River basin with outlet at Soyang Dam site. The three daily hydrographs and the three hourly flood events during 1990~1996 are selected for model calibrations and performance tests. The model parameters are estimated on 1990 daily event by manual fitting technique and the effects of topographic index distribution to river flow simulations are investigated on the study area. The model performance on correlation coefficient between the observed and the simulated flows for the verification periods are above 0.77 on the 95-, 96-daily events, while above 0.87 for 90-, 95-, 96-hourly events. By the consideration of flood flow characteristics in Korea, the physical interpretation of the model concept, and the model performance, it can be concluded that the TOPMODEL is feasible as a flood forecasting model in Korea. This study was intended to set development priorities for five undeveloped neighborhood parks scattered throughout the downtown area of Cheongju City using a PDPI(Park Development Pressure Index). In order to calculate the PDPI, this study employed an additive integration method. The PDPI was graded from 1 to 5, based on the evaluation scores in accordance with nine indicators selected through literature reviews and interviews with public officials. The indicators have been classified into three categories: physical environment, utilization possibility, and facility distribution. The indicators are as follows: 1) 'altitude and inclination' and 'NDVI' as physical environment indicators; 2) 'ratio of residential area', 'forecasted utility population', 'undeveloped period', 'redevelopment near parks', 'ratio of area divided by main streets', reflecting utilization possibility; and 3) 'Distance between Neighborhood Parks' and 'Distribution of alternative facilities' as facility distribution. The following results were found: 1) three neighborhood parks including 'Sagic 2', 'Sachen', and 'Dangsan' were ranked in the first grade of PDPI; and, 2) one neighborhood park 'Samsungdang' was ranked in the fifth grade of PDPI. The above results mean that among undeveloped neighborhood parks, three have been exposed to extremely strong park development pressure, and that while two neighborhood parks have had strong exposure to park development pressure due to potential users according to their close location to Sagic Ro, an east-west main axis of Cheongju City, one neighborhood park has had weak exposure to development pressure because of the close location to 'Chuungbuk National University' and a lack of residential areas, showing a low possibility for development.
In this study we performed risk evaluation based on parameters using the SINMAP, GIS-based extended program in order to predict ground disaster that is frequent recently. As for the risk evaluation, in order to understand the effects of parameters, we defined that the ranges of internal friction angles and T/R values as important variables had three and four patterns, respectively. The results of the interpretation were compared with those of the existing landslide in order to identify landslide flow and to evaluate the applicability of the parameters. The analysis of the geomorphologic saturated zone showed that the boundary saturated zone and the saturated zone were almost consistent with the site of avalanche of earth and rocks and the area of underground water convergence was correlated to the area where collapse started, indicating that the geomorphologic saturated zone may serve as an index for estimating possibility of landslide when used with slope distribution, colluvial soil, and structures inducing landslide in combination. When the lower limit of the internal friction angle increased more, the upper threshold decreased by 50 to 70% and the influence on the stability index was higher, but the influence was declined within the range of lower wetness index. The analysis of changes based on wetness index range showed that all the groups have similar SI distribution, except for the one in which mean altitude values are applied, indicating that the results are susceptible more by the internal friction angle than by the wetness index.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics and spatial changes of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in mountainous areas with altitude more than 200 meters in South Korea. In order to analyze the spatial distribution patterns, spatial analysis was performed on 203 Automatic Mountain Meteorology Observation Station (AMOS) points from 2012 to 2016 by Euclidean distance analysis, nearest neighbor index analysis, and Kernel density analysis methods. As a result, change of the average distance between 2012 and 2016 decreased up to 16.4km. The nearest neighbor index was 0.666632 to 0.811237, and the result of Z-score test was -4.372239 to -5.145115(P<0.01). The spatial distributions of AMOSs through Kernel density analysis were analyzed to cover 129,719ha/a station in 2012 and 50,914ha/a station in 2016. The result of a comparison between 2012 and 2016 on the spatial distribution has decreased about 169,399ha per a station for the past 5 years. Therefore it needs to be considered the mountainous regions with low density when selecting the site of AMOS.
