  • In the present study, when the surface of kenaf, which is an environmentally friendly natural fiber, was treated by using adhesive solution containing Chemlok 402, the effects of fiber surface treatment, fiber content and fiber length on the cure characteristics, hardness, tensile modulus and abrasion resistance of kenaf/natural rubber composites were investigated. The kenaf fiber contents consisting of the composites were varied with 0, 5, 10, 15, and 29 phr at a fixed fiber length of 2 mm and also the fiber length was varied with 2, 35, and 70 mm at a fixed fiber content of 5 phr. The Tmax and tc90 values, Shore A hardness, tensile modulus, and abrasion resistance of natural rubber composites strongly depended on the kenaf fiber content and length. The characteristics of the composite with kenaf fibers treated with the adhesive solution containing Chemlok 402 were higher than those untreated. This is ascribed to the improved interfacial adhesion between the treated kenaf fiber and the rubber matrix. This study suggests that an appropriate use of adhesive solution may be possible to increase the properties of natural fiber-reinforced composites.

  • As the enhancement of indoor air quality is increasingly compelling the use of natural materials without any emission, this study reports the preparation and performance of natural garlic adhesives for wallpaper. The natural garlic adhesives were successfully prepared by the extraction of the clove of raw garlic with water to isolate carbohydrates and proteins. Properties of the prepared garlic adhesives such as the non volatile solids content, viscosity, density, and pH were 62%, 2,789 mPa.s, $1.3g/cm^3$, and 6.6, respectively. The non-volatile solids content has a great impact on the adhesion performance of the prepared garlic adhesives, which was adequate about 60%. Bonding strength of prepared garlic adhesives was greater than the requirement of a Korean standard for wallpaper. In addition, the garlic adhesives showed antibacterial activity inheriting from the garlic. It is expected that the prepared garlic adhesives could be used as safe and natural adhesives without emitting any volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde gas.

  • Effects of the ratio of rubber composition on covulcanization and ozone resistance were studied in this study. Specimens used in this study were rubber compounds(specimen-A) blended with various ratio of NR, SBR, BR, IIR, and EPDM, unsaturated rubber compounds(specimen-B) with NR/BR/SBR, and saturated rubber compounds(specimen-C) with NR/IIR/EPDM. PAD adhesion specimen was prepared from vulcanizing specimen-A and B, and specimen-A and C, respectively. Using same adhesion specimen, peel strength was measured and tested ozone resistance. In specimen-A, peel strength was higher with increasing NR ratio for NR and BR contained blends. In other specimen-A containing NR and SBR, the peel strength was also increased with increasing SBR ratio. NR/BR/IIR/EPDM rubber compounds had also better adhesion property than NR/SBR/IIR/EPDM compounds. As more unsaturated rubber was blended, the peel strength was higher but ozone resistance was worse. Optimum ratio of unsaturated and saturated rubbers for the peel strength and ozone resistance was 60/40.

  • Latent fingerprint left on the adhesive sides of tapes can be easily found at a crime scene. Small Particle Reagents(SPR) based on iron oxide($Fe_3O_4$) is a technique for the detection of a latent fingerprint adhesive surface. In this study, found out that the causes affecting the quality of the fingerprints developed when used SPR based on iron oxide. To a suspension of 0.5g of iron oxide in 100ml of distilled water, 0.5ml or more surfactant were added can be developed latent fingerprints of good quality. In addition, using surfactants HLB(hydrophile-lipophile balance) value of 11~18 showed good contrast to the background and latent fingerprint.

  • In a natural fiber-reinforced composite material, many studies have been devoted to improving the interfacial adhesion between natural fiber and polymer matrix and the composite properties through various fiber surface modifications. In the present study, waste wool-reinforced polypropylene matrix composites were fabricated by compression molding and their mechanical and impact properties were characterized. As a result, the tensile and flexural properties and the impact strength of waste wool/polypropylene composites strongly depended on the treatment medium, alkali treatment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and silane treatment with 3-glycidylpropylsilane(GPS). The composite with waste wool by silane treatment exhibited higher mechanical properties and impact resistance than that by alkali treatment. The fracture surfaces of the composites support qualitatively the increased properties, showing the improved interfacial bonding between the waste wool and the polypropylene matrix.

  • This study evaluated the influence of the type of restoration and the amount of interdental spacing on the stress distribution in maxillary central incisors restored by means of porcelain laminate veneers and direct composite resin restorations. Three-dimensional finite element models were fabricated to represent different types of restorations. Four clinical situations were considered. Type I, closing diastema using composite resin. Labial border of composite resin was extended just enough to cover the interdental space; Type II, closing diastema using composite resin without reduction of labial surface. Labial border of composite resin was extended distally to cover the half of the total labial surface; Type III, closing diastema using composite resin with reduction of labial surface. Labial border of the preparation and restored composite resin was extended distally two-thirds of the total labial surface; Type IV, closing diastema using porcelain laminate veneer with a feathered-edge preparation technique. Four different interdental spaces (1.0, 2.0. 3.0, 4.0 mm) were applied for each type of restorations. For all types of restoration, adding the width of free extension of the porcelain laminate veneer and composite resin increased the stress occurred at the bonding layer. The maximum stress values observed at the bonding layer of Type IV were higher than that of Type I, II and III. However, the increasing rate of maximum stress value of Type IV was lower than that of Type I, II and III.

  • Epoxy matrix based composites were fabricated by adding SiC nano fillers. The interfacial properties of composites were varied with different shapes of SiC nano fillers. To investigate the shape effects on the interfacial properties, beta and whisker type SiC nano fillers were used for this evaluation. The dispersion states of nano SiC-epoxy nanocomposites were evaluated by capacitance measurements. FE-SEM was used to observe the fracture surface of different structures of SiC-epoxy nanocomposites and to investigate for reinforcement effect. Interfacial properties between carbon fiber and SiC-epoxy nanocomposites were also evaluated by ILSS (interlaminar shear strength) and IFSS (interfacial shear strength) tests. The interfacial adhesion of beta type nanocomposites was better than whisker type.

  • Two polymeric interfaces with single component homo-polymers were prepared to control the orientation of block copolymer thin-film nanostructures. Poly(4-acetoxy styrene) (OH-PAS) and poly(4-methoxy styrene) (OH-PMS) which have the average chemical composition of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) were precisely synthesized through nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization. After dehydration reactions between above polymers and SiOx layers of silicon wafers, the polymer-modified interface induced partial (30%) vertical orientation of PS-b-PMMA thin film in the case of OH-PMS and wholly parallel orientation in the case of OH-PAS. Chemical compositions of polymeric interface layers are regarded as the key parameter to control the orientation of nanostructures of block copolymer thin film.
