  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data necessary for improving the oral health of the elderly and quality of their lives by analyzing the relationship among the geriatric denture-related characteristics, denture satisfaction, and geriatric oral health assessment index. For this study, the elderly aged 65 or higher who resided in Euseong-gun, Yeongju-si, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do were surveyed from March 25, 2013 to May 9 of the same year. The results of this study showed that the denture satisfaction had high correlation with the 'satisfaction with denture attachment', 'satisfaction with aesthetic function of pronunciation', and satisfaction with masticatory function. Moreover, the causative relation was found to exist among the geriatric denture-related characteristics, denture satisfaction, and geriatric oral health assessment index. Thus, it is considered necessary to establish the institutional system and take measures that can improve the awareness towards the geriatric oral health education and geriatric oral health state with respect to effective use and management of denture.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the association between metabolic syndrome and its components and health-related quality of life in Korean adults. Metabolic syndrome defined in accordance with NCEP-ATP III, and HRQOL was evaluated using EQ-5D. Data on 16,657 adult, extracted from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys in 2016-2018, were analyzed and showed that 34.3% of subjects were metabolic syndrome, with males higher than females. The average score of HRQOL was 96.7 for men and 94.5 for women. Multiple logistic regression analysis was results, The OR of impaired HRQOL in women who metabolic syndrome was 1.27(95% CI: 1.09-1.46) compared to who women without metabolic syndrome. Among the components of metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity (OR=1.72, 95% CI: 1.50-1.97) and high blood pressure (OR=1.26, 95% CI: 1.06-1.50) were associated to impaired HRQOL. But, there were no significant in men. In conclusion, In order to improve women's HRQOL, it suggests that an approach strategy is necessary to reduce the risk factors of metabolic syndrome, which take into account women's characteristics.

  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the changes of the heart rate, hand function, and health related quality of life of the people with intellectual disability through the increase of the auditory stimulation. The subjects were 16 people with intellectual disability. The increase of the auditory stimulation was modulated through the music sound and the intensity was consisted of 60dB, 65dB and 70dB. The wist heart rate and blood pressure monitor was used to measure the heart rate during the application of the auditory stimulation increase. The hand function of right and left hand was measured by the Purdue pegboard. Health related of quality of life was measured by the short form-8 health survey. As the results, the increase of the heart rate was showed by the increase of the auditory stimulation and the decrease of the hand function and health related quality of life was showed. For these, the increase of the auditory stimulation acts as a psychological distress, thereby the increase of the heart rate and the reduction of the hand function and health relate quality of life showed. Thus, to decrease of the heart rate and increase the hand function and the health related quality of life of the people with intellectual disability, the intensity of the auditory stimulation should be considered in the environmental stimulation.

  • This study aims to discover the relations between physical activities of the elderly and their health-related quality of life. For the study, it targeted 720 of the 778 elderly persons whose ages were above 65 for a final analysis except 58 whose physical activities and health-related quality of life could not be evaluated from the data of the first year of the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES IV-1), 2007. As a result, it was discovered that there were significant differences in the elderly's health-related quality of life according to age, education, sleeping hours, stress, the number of chronic diseases and subjective awareness of health. In particular, there were significant differences in their health-related quality of life between the group with high physical activity level and the group with low physical activity level. Based on the results above, it is suggested that the persons with higher performance ability of physical activities can have higher quality of living along with increase of energy and further studies dealing with more factors, ranges and periods are needed.

  • Purpose: The aims of this were to analyse the quantitative research trends and describe the factors influencing health related to quality of life (HRQoL) and instruments used to HRQoL after Intensive care units (ICU) discharge. Methods: This study were included 84 published papers regarding HRQoL after ICU discharge from initial data to December 2015. Results: The majority of papers were performed abroad. Only 4 papers with regard to HRQoL of ICU survivors were performed by nurses. 36 studies (42.8%) were used to measure HRQoL ICU survivors using the SF-36. 29 studies (34.5%) were used to measure HRQoL at 3~6 months after ICU discharge. Older age, longer length of stay at ICU, severity of illness, anxiety and depression were main risk factors to lower HRQoL in ICU patients. Conclusions: This study provides a better understanding of quality of life follwing critical illness. Therefore, further stduy is needed to develop patient centered intervention considered patients'health status and recovery phase. Additionally, large prospective multicenter cohort studies should be required.

  • This study is to examine moderating effects of income and mediating effects of health related quality of life in the relationship between depression experience and suicidal behavior among menopausal middle-aged women in Korea. This study employed 1,182 middle-aged women aged 40 to 60 of the third year (2015) data from the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES VI). The results are that first, depression experience were significantly associated with suicidal behavior. Secondly, health related quality of life appeared to mediate the relationship between depression experience and suicidal behavior. Thirdly, income was significantly moderated the relationship between depression experience and suicidal behavior in relatively low income group below average income after controlling for mediating effects of health related quality of life. These results showed that there is a need to enhance health policy for mental health care in middle-aged women and to expand intervention program for improvement of health related quality of life, and especially, intervention for improving mental health of low-income group.

  • This study is a secondary data analysis study to examine the relationship between oral health behaviors, quality of life, and depression in adult men using data of the first year (2016) of the 7th national health and nutrition examination survey. The analysis was conducted on 2,647 of above the age 19 in men. The data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18.0. Results were positive correlation between the quality of life (EQ-5D) and oral health behavior (0.142, p <0.01), and a negative correlation with the depression (PHQ-9) (-0.347, p). <0.01). The higher the rate of oral health behavior, the higher the quality of life and the lower the depression. These findings suggest that the level of practice of oral health behavior is closely related to the quality of life and depression, this will be used as basic data for developing health policy for oral health and general health improvement for adult males.

  • In literature, empirical studies investigating how stress affects HRQOL (health related quality of life) through physical activities are insufficient. In this sense, on the basis of KNHANES dataset for 2008 ~ 2013, we conducted an empirical study. Empirical results revealed that in the male group with stress experience, HRQOL was significantly influenced by age, household income, education, occupation, physical activity level. To do so, we adapt the chi-square analysis and the logistic regression analysis. Meanwhile, in the stress non-experience group, the low level activity has lower HRQOL than the high level activity(male: OR=1.15 p<0.001, female: OR=1.18 p<0.001). In the stress experience group, the male has the same pattern of effect compared to the stress non-experience group(OR=1.79 p<0.01). However, in the female, the low level activity has the higher HRQOL than the high level activity(OR=1.18 p<0.05). Therefore, we confirmed that physical activity has a different effect on HRQOL through stress experience.
