Numerical taxonomy of tribe Forsythieae (Oleaceae) in Korea (한국산 개나리족(Tribe Forsythieae; Oleaceae)의 수리분류학적 연구)

  • Numerical analysis based on 33 morphological characters from 25 populations of 8 species of tribe Forsythieae in Korea was conducted to investigate the taxonomic delimitation and discuss the systematic relationships. In this study, Fontanesia phyllyreoides Labill was adopted as comparing outgroup to discuss the taxonomic status of Abeliophyllum distichum and elucidate the taxonomic relationships between tribe Forsythieae and tribe Fontanesiae. Based on the results of PCA, the sum of contributions for the total variance of three major principal components was 79.6% (PC1 54.2%, PC2 15.4% and PC3 10.0%, repectively). Two dimensional plotting from PCA results recognized three distinct generic clusters. Among the populations of Forsythia, two distinct groups were clustered as I. koreana-saxatilis-viridissima and II. ovata-nakaii. However, 15 populations of Abeliophyllum distichum were arranged randomly without any tendency, and the infraspecies of Abeliophyllum distichum could be recognized as individual variations. Fontanesia phyllyreoides Labill was clustered independently and intertribal limitation was clearly distinguished.

  • Cytological characteristics of Abeliophyllum distichum (Oleaceae), endemic to Korea, was examined. Somatic chromosome numbers was 2n = 28 which corresponds to diploid based on x=14. Chromosome length was varied continuously from $1.00{\mu}m$ to $2.03{\mu}m$. Karyotype of Abeliophyllum distichum was investigated in this study for the first time. The cytological characteristics including basic chromosome number, continuous variation of chromosome length, diploid and karyotype were similar to those of the genus Forsythia, which indicated the close relationship between Abeliophyllum and Forsythia, and consequently the two genera seemed to be included to same tribe.

Comparative anatomy of petiole in Forsythieae, Fontanesieae and Myxopyrum (Oleaceae) and its systematic implication (개나리족, 향선나무족, Myxopyrum속(물푸레나무과) 엽병의 해부학적 형질 및 분류학적 유용성)

  • A comparative study of the petiole anatomy in the tribes Forsythieae (Abeliophyllum, Forsythia) and Fontanesieae (Fontanesia), including one related genus Myxopyrum belonging to Myxopyreae, was carried out using light microscopy. The anatomical characteristics of the distal, medial and proximal parts of the petiole were studied to document any differences. We are described in detail based on their quantitative and qualitative characteristics. Three crystal types (acicular, druse, and prismatic crystals) were found in both Fontanesia and Myxopyrum within all of the studied taxa. Uni-cellular non-glandular trichomes were found in Abeliophyllum and three Forsythia taxa (F. europaea, F. giraldiana, and F. japonica). All features were compared and the vascular patterns of the petiole were distinguished in two types: Type 1A: Trace continuous arc - without crystals (Abeliophyllum, Forsythia), 1B: with crystals (Myxopyrum), Type 2: Trace invaginating at ends with crystals (Fontanesia). A detailed anatomical description of the studied taxa is provided, and its systematic importance is also briefly discussed. In conclusion, some petiole anatomical characteristics (e.g., the main vascular patterns, the presence/absence of crystals) can be useful for diagnostic features as well as partly for supporting the recently proposed molecular phylogeny.

Studies on Anatomical Properties of Forsythia in Korea (한국산(韓國産) 개나리속(屬)의 해부학적(解剖學的) 성질(性質)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • These experiments were carried out to investigate anatomical properties of Forsythia in Korea. The results obtained were summarized as follows: It was estimated that the vessel of cross section was almost simple pore and multiple pores which were compounded two or three units were showed sometimes and arrangement of vessel were ring porous wood. In the mean length of vessel, Forsythia koreana was ranged $539.98{\pm}154.71{\mu}$ and Forsythia ovata $602.22{\pm}157.38{\mu}$ and Forsythia nakaii T. Lee $465.50{\pm}83.02{\mu}$. In the mean length of fiber wood, Forsythia koreana $387.40{\pm}68.23{\mu}$, and Forsythia ovata was $533.90{\pm}106.77{\mu}$ and Forsythia nakaii T. Lee was $482.40{\pm}72.33{\mu}$. The type of Ray parenchyma was heterogeneous ray I tissue. The mean length of procumbent ray cell in the radial section was $42.14{\pm}8.30{\mu}$ and that of rectangle type in up right ray cell was $45.76{\pm}7.19{\mu}$ and that of square type was $26.66{\pm}2.99{\mu}$. The mean height of ray parenchyma in the tangential section was $174.80{\pm}37.51{\mu}$ and the width of ray parenchyma was $17.25{\pm}3.59{\mu}$ and the mean number of ray parenchyma was $14{\pm}3$.

First Report on the Shoot Blight Disease of Gaenari (Forsythia koreana) Caused by Septotinia sp. in Korea (Septotinia sp.에 의한 개나리 가지마름병(가칭) 발생)

  • In early spring, water-soaked lesions appeared on the petals and leaves of gaenari (Forsythia koreana), and the tissues were necrotic and dry. Cankers appeared on the infected branches around late spring and the above part of a branch withered and died. However, it was very rare that the base of the cankered-branch died. The identical fungi were isolated from the lesions on various tissues, and they grew with white colonies on potato dextrose agar medium. The fungus grew most actively at 23℃ and produced many sclerotia of various sizes. In a pathogenicity assay in which mycelial and sclerotial suspensions were inoculated on each organ of forsythia, it was found that the pathogen infects the flower only, but not the leaves or branches. Symptoms on the flowers spread to the next leaves and branches over time and the infected branches were eventually withered. To identify the isolates, DNA sequences of four phylogenetic markers including ITS, LSU, Tub2, and CAL were analyzed and all isolates were identified as a species in the genus Septotinia. This is not only the first report of gaenari (forsythia) shoot blight caused by the fungus Septotinia sp., but also the first report on the genus Septotinia as a plant pathogen in Korea.

A taxonomic study of Abeliophyllum Nakai (O1eaceae) based on RAPD analysis (RAPD분석에 의한 미선나무속의 분류학적 연구)

  • Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai (O1eaceae) is a monotype of Korea and is distinguished from related genus Forsythia Vahl by the morphological characters such as fruit shape, flower color and etc. Even though several intraspecific taxa were reported according to the color of flowers and shape of fruits, there have been many controversals on the taxonomic indentity and status of rank on those taxa. In the present study, we performed the RAPD analysis to delimit the infraspecific taxa of Abeliophyllum distichum and to investigate the genetic polymorphism and relationships among 12 populations. 212 scorable RAPD markers with 70 common markers were found from the PCR reactions with 16 random oligoprimers and were analyzed by Nei's genetic distance. From 0.108 to 0.321 of genetic variations were showed among the taxa. Some regional groups instead of same taxa were clustered from the phonogram of UPGMA analysis. Also, we could not find distinct lineage among intraspecific taxa. The result from RAPD analysis supported that the infraspecific taxa of Abeliophyllum distichum might be the individual variations and treated as the same taxa. RAPD analysis was very useful to confirm the high gene pool with diverse genetic polymorphism among Abeliophyllum distichum populations.

Scale Insects (Sternorrhyncha) Occurring on Flowering Plants in Korea (국내 화훼류에 발생하는 깍지벌레(진딧물아목)의 종류)

  • A total of 45 scale insects belonging to 29 genera of five families were recognized on 15 kind of flowering plants on the basis of specimens collected in 2003 and specimens deposited in the Insect Collection of NIAST in Korea. Three species were recognized on Korean forsythia, four on chrysanthemum, 15 on common camellia, seven on kobus magnolia, three on rose of sharon, one on Indian lilac, six on rose, seven on rhododendrons, two on bamboo palm, three on benjamin tree, 12 on evergreen euonymus, five on Japanese yew, two on corn plant, six on orchids and two on cacti. Pulvinaria floccifera (Westwood) and Pseudaonidia paeoniae (Cockerell) on common camellia and Pulvinaria citricolar Kuwana on rose of sharon are reported for the first time from the Korean Peninsula.

The systematic consideration of leaf epidermal microstructure in the tribe Forsythieae and its related genera (Oleaceae) (개나리족 및 근연분류군(물푸레나무과)의 잎 표피 미세구조에 대한 분류학적 검토)

  • A comparative study of leaf epidermal microstructure in tribes Forsythieae (Abeliophyllum: 1 species, Forsythia: 12 taxa - 10 species, 2 varieties), Fontanesieae (Fontanesia: 2 species) including one related genus Myxopyrum belonging to Myxopyreae (Myxopyrum: 5 taxa - 4 species, 1 subspecies) was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to evaluate their significance in the taxonomy. The leaves of investigated taxa are either hypostomatic or amphistomatic, but former is more frequent. The size range of the guard cells is 17.14-47.58 ${\times}$ 11.59- 44.25 ${\mu}m$: the smallest one was found in Forsythia giraldiana (17.48-22.96 ${\times}$ 11.64-12.88 ${\mu}m$), while the largest one was measured to Myxopyrum pierrei (31.50-41.75 ${\times}$ 32.53-44.25 ${\mu}m$). Anomocytic stomatal complex are most frequent type (rarely paracytic), usually both anomocytic and anisocytic occur in one leaf. In surface view both adaxial and abaxial anticlinal walls of the subsidiary cells are variable (e.g., straight/curved, undulate, sinuate, undulate/sinuate). Three types (simple unicellular and multicellular non-glandular, subsessile glandular) of trichomes are found in leaves. Finally, the systematic significance of the leaf epidermal micromorphological characters in idenfitication and elucidation of these tribe, between or within the genera including among the species is also briefly discussed.
