Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors related to depression of elderly patients in geriatric hospitals. Methods: The subjects were 195 elderly patients who met the inclusion criteria of scores more than 18 on the K-MMSE score and no reported mental disease. The data were collected from February 20 to March 20, 2009. The research instruments utilized in this study were depression (GDSSF-K), activities of daily living and self esteem (RSES), social support, life satisfaction. Data were analyzed Pearson correlation and Multiple Stepwise Regression using SPSS 15.0. Results: Depression score were negatively correlation with ADL, social support, life satisfaction and self-esteem. Among the factors studied related to depression, life satisfaction had highest explanatory power of 36.5% and it was followed by physical health status and activity of daily living. These explained 43.7% of the depression. Conclusion: The mean GDSSF-K 8.94, which indicates the higher than middle levels of depression. The findings suggest that it is important to develop educational programs to increase life satisfaction, physical health status and activity of daily living. Nursing interventions, including volunteer activities, health promotion program, and sports program could be useful in enhancing these factors.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify activities of daily living, depression and self-rated health and related factors for Korean Elderly. Methods: Data from the survey for the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging in 2010 were used. The data were analyzed using frequencies, weighted proportions, and hierarchical multiple logistic regression. Results: Significant difference was observed in health status induced by socioeconomic status between men and women, but not among age groups. Socioeconomic status was strongly associated with self-rated health among male and female elders. Being unschooled and low net family asset were significantly related with dependency in activities of daily living and depressive symptoms among men. Only low net family asset was significantly related with depressive symptoms among women. Family support provides a slight decrease to the negative relationship between socioeconomic status and health status, especially depressive symptoms. Conclusion: This study suggests that interventions to reduce health inequalities should target elderly with lower socioeconomic status and with poor family support, using a gender-specific approach.
Purpose: This study was to identify the quality of life and its related factors in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was utilized. Data were collected using questionnaires from 128 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia who visited an outpatient department at one general hospital in 2016. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results: Mean age of the participant was $67.81{\pm}6.94$. Mean years since diagnosis was $6.41{\pm}5.20$. The mean score of quality of life was $0.82{\pm}0.09$, indicating that QOL was relatively low. Lower urinary tract symptoms (p=.029), anxiety, depression, Activities of daily living were significantly correlated to with quality of life (p<.001). Activities of daily living accounted for 54% (p<.001) of the variance in quality of life as a result of hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that nursing intervention may improve the quality of life of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia by increasing their Activities of daily living.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the performance status and quality of life (QOL) of patients after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) according to period of survival. Methods: Participants consists of 83 HSCT patients who were being treated regularly at out-patient clinic in two general hospitals in D city. Data were collected using questionnaires that were modified by Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Bone Marrow Transplabtation (FACT-BMT) scale and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG). Results: The unrelated HSCT group's survival period was significantly worse than related HSCT group and autologous HSCT group. Performance status of the group with more than 3 years survival was significantly higher than that of the group with less than a year survival. The mean score of total QOL of HSCT patients was 2.69 out of 4. Total QOL was not significantly different among period of survival less than 1 year, 1-3 years, and more than 3 years. But BMT QOL was shown that the group with more than 3 years survival was higher than the groups with less than a year survival. Conclusion: Performance status and BMT QOL of the group with less than 1 year survival was significantly lowered than the groups with more than 3 years survival.
Purpose: This study examined the effect of a self-help management program which strengthens self-efficacy on the self-efficacy and the activities of daily living(ADL) in stroke patients. Methods: A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group, pre and post design was used. The subjects consisted of 47 stroke patients. Twenty-six patients were assigned to the experimental group and 21 patients were assigned to the control group. The self-help management program by strengthen self-efficacy and general hospital care were carried out on the experimental group. General hospital care was performed on the control group. The data was collected before and 5 weeks after the program. All subjects were questioned about the self-efficacy and ADL before and after the program. Results: The scores of the self-efficacy and ADL in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group. Conclusion: The self-help management program by strengthen self-efficacy is effective in increasing the self-efficacy and ADL. Therefore this program may be a useful intervention to increase the ADL in stroke patients.

Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the influencing factors of cognitive function and depression in elderly. Method: From 3 provinces, 282 elders who resided in community and facilities completed structured questionnaires, including cognitive functions, depression, self-esteem, ADL, and IADL. Data were analyzed by applying ${\chi}^2$-test, ANOVA, partial correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis with SAS 8.12. Results: Community dwelling aged people showed higher scores in MMSE-K, self-esteem, ADL and IADL, and showed lower scores in depression than facility elders. MMSE-K was positively correlated in self-esteem, ADL, and personal cognition of health, except depression. Major factors that affect cognitive function of elderly were residual type, age, and IADL. In addition, major factors that affect depression of elderly were self-esteem, personal cognition of health, and marital status. Conclusions: Based on the results above, it is necessary to identify the status of cognition and depression in the elderly, and to develop nursing intervention programs, which improve cognitive function and reduce depression for aged, especially for the facility admitted aged.
Purpose. The purpose of this study was descriptive research to evaluate the clinical competency and nursing professionalism values before and after nursing clinical practice in nursing students. The collected data were analyzed by paired t-test, ANOVA, correlation. Results. Clinical practice before performance was $3.48({\pm}.38)$, after practice $3.79({\pm}.40)$ was a professional nursing practice before intuition $3.90({\pm}.41)$, after the practice was $3.74({\pm}.40)$, clinical performance and the nursing profession is positive found to be correlated. Conclusions. This study suggests that development of research programs to improve care professional intuition in nursing college is necessary as results.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to identify nurses' empathy, attitude and pain management for patients with dementia and the factors associated with their performance of pain management. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional survey. The participants in the study were 114 nurses working at 12 geriatric hospitals. This study utilized the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), which measures four empathy factors. Nurses' attitudes toward pain and performance of pain management, and general and pain related characteristics were measured by self-administered questionnaires. Results: Barriers to pain management for patients with dementia were absence of guidelines, prejudice of pain in dementia, and lack of time and knowledge deficit. There was a significant positive correlation between empathic concern and attitudes, perspective-taking of empathy and pain management. There was also a correlation between empathy and pain management. Stepwise linear regression analysis indicated that the significant factors affecting the performance of pain management included perspective-taking of empathy, use of pain management in dementia guideline and attitudes toward pain. These factors explained 24.0% of variance. Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that empathy and positive attitude are the important provider attributes which needs to be enhanced by educational programs. It is also necessary to develop and disseminate guidelines for a dementia specific pain management.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of the role conflict among nurses in long-term care hospitals. Method: Data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine nurses in long-term care hospitals. Colaizzi's phenomenological method was used for data analysis. Result: In this study, five categories and twelve theme clusters were generated. The five categories consisted of 'Heavy workload,' 'Nursing job delegation of unclear regulations,' 'Unprotected doctor's job performance,' 'Non-systematic nursing assistants management' and 'Limit of competency.' Conclusion: These results will contribute to the role establishment of nurse in long-term care hospitals and the qualitative improvement of work by providing the grounds for the strategy development which improve working environment and job satisfaction of nurses in long-term care hospitals apposite to the case of Korea.
Purpose: This study attempts to examine the effects of a horticultural program on activities of daily living (ADL) and depression among older patients with mild dementia. Methods: This study adopted a quasi-experimental design-based nonequivalent control group pretest and posttest design, enrolling 30 older patients with mild dementia. The Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale was utilized, while the data was collected from the experimental group for 60 minutes, twice weekly for 6 weeks in 12 sessions. ADL and depression were assessed for both the experimental and the control group. Overall functions were assessed only for the experimental group. Results: The experimental group showed improvement in physical function, cognitive function, as well as psychological, emotional function and social function following each session (p<.001). The horticulture program was effective in both ADL ($Z^2=5.65$, p<.001) and depression (t=-5.24, p<.001). Conclusion: In this study, the horticultural therapy based on the Cox's interaction model had positive effects for older patients with mild dementia. Therefore, horticultural therapy may be commendably applied to older patients with mild dementia as a nursing intervention.
