This study investigated the perception level of family resilience and family strength, the difference in the family strength between the resilient group and non-resilient group and the effect of family resilience on family strength. The study results were as follows: First, the students' perceptions of family resilience and family strength were moderately high. Second, the students with positive perceptions of all three family resilience sub-factors (resilient group) also had a higher perceived family strength than the non-resilient group. Third, gender was found to have an influence on family strength, with the male students having a higher perceived family strength. All three sub-factors of family resilience were statistically significant and the belief system and organizational pattern had a strong influence on the family strength. In particular, the belief system was the most powerful factor affecting the family strength. The role clarity, family cohesion and family resource of the family organizational pattern were significant factors. Moreover, collaborative problem solving and open emotional communication also had a significant influence on family strength.

  • There are two main purposes in this study. First, we compare the effects of wives' characteristics with the effects of the husbands' characteristics on the induced abortion. Second, we analyze whether the determinants of the induced abortion have changed according to parity and conception period. The main findings are follows. First, both wives' and husbands' socioeconomic characters have insignificant effects on the induced abortion at parity 0, in the 1997 and 2000 Korean Fertility Survey data. Second, during the periods of the lowest-low fertility, after 2000 in Korea, wives' employments have positive effects at parity 0 and 1, while husbands' educational levels have negative effects at parity 1 on the induced abortion. The implications are as follows. First, having children had been the universal social phenomenon before 2000 in Korea. however, after 2000, reproductions have become the women's choice, lather than the duty of married women. Women must weight the balance between the benefits and the costs of children so that women's fertility behaviors become a rational choice. Women's employment is the most important factor in these rational calculations. Second, both Western individualism and the traditional Korean familism have significant effects on the fertility behavior and the induced abortions in Korea. This rejects the diffusion theory, which tells that the traditional familism must be replaced by the Western individualism in order to decline the fertility rates in developing countries.

Forty-one 6- to 7-year-old children and their mothers were interviewed and observed in their home settings. Results indicated that the quality of the home environment was positively related to the moral development of children. Mothers who provided a more stimulating home environment had children who received higher scores on the Moral Development Scale. Regression analyses indicated that the quality of the home environment was the most significant predictor of the moral development of young children.

To achieve this, we chose these research questions. To verify these research questions, data were collected by distributing 470 questionnaires to Social Service Agent serving in service organizations located in Seoul. Four hundred twenty-seven surveys were used for statistical analysis. The results of this study are as follows: First, Social Service Agents were shown to generally adjust well to service, as self-differentiation and ego-resilience were slightly higher than the median, while service maladjustment behavior was slightly lower than the median. Second, when the effects of sociodemographic characteristics, self-differentiation and ego-resilience on service maladjustment behavior were studied, all values of sociodemographic characteristics, self-differentiation and ego-resilience affected all lower factors of service maladjustment behavior with significance. For social withdrawal, the effectiveness of interpersonal relations, optimistic attitude, and the degree of family regression had a negative correlation, and emotional divorce, education level, and term of service had a positive correlation. The degree of family regression, anger management, and cognitive function vs. emotional function had a negative correlation with hyperactivity while self unity had a positive one. Family regression, cognitive function vs. emotional function, anger management, and family's economic level negatively correlated with aggression. Family regression, optimistic attitude, cognitive function vs. emotional function, family's economic level and term of service had a negative correlation with obsession and compulsion.

  • This study examined the level of social support for grandparent-headed families and its effects on the grandparents' physical and mental health. For this purpose, the survey data was collected from 141 grandparents raising their grandchildren in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The study generated several findings. First, grandparent-headed families tended to rely on formal support system rather than informal one. Second, grandparent's physical health was found to be very poor that 82.3% of the grandparents reportedly needed some assistance in at least one ADL, and their mean score of depression measured by CES-D was 27.4, indicating a moderate level of psychological distress. Third, among the sociodemographic and stressor variables, grandparents' sex, the number of their children and household keeping burden were statistically significant predictors of their ADL restriction. As for depression level of the grandparents, their monthly income, parenting duration, the number of their children, economic difficulties, household keeping burden and social restrictions were found to be statistically significant. Fourth, grandparents who reported of having more social support from their friends, a higher level of satisfaction of the friends' social support and also of being satisfied with social support from their religious associations tended to experience significantly less ADL restrictions. The more kinds of social support received from friends and social welfare agencies and the less satisfied they were with social support from governmental sector, the higher their depression level was. Implications for social welfare services and programs for grandparent-headed families were discussed.
