  • The objective of this study was to investigate factors that could bring about successful implementation of extensive reading using online/offline blended English library system called 'Reading Gate' in primary and secondary schools. Although there are a great number of studies on effects of various extensive reading on linguistic, cognitive, and affective development, few studies have investigated how extensive reading programs can be implemented at large scale, e.g., whole school level. After analyzing students' reading levels in 200 schools using the same online extensive reading program called Reading Gate, results showed that while some schools were successful, others were not. Five primary and 13 middle schools were selected as successful schools. Data on implementation of the program of schools was gathered. Eighteen teachers and seven headteachers took part in the interview. After analyzing these data on the implementation of the extensive reading program, results revealed that the following five factors for successful implementation of blended extensive reading programs: online level-up system, teacher intervention, integration with the curriculum, school-level support, and parents' awareness of literacy. This suggests that each factor might have contributed to the successful implementation of the extensive reading program at large scale. Implications and applications of this finding are discussed in this study.

A reading program for children which was operated by a public library in Seoul was selected. The outcome evaluation was started with the analysis of the reading program process including planning, operation, and evaluation. Based on the analysis, a logic model framework for outcome evaluation was developed. For evaluation, user, bibliography, and circulation data were collected from the library KOLAS system. Additionally, the participant information were extracted from the final report drafted after the program. The research results show that the number of circulation of program participants was increased after the program. In addition, the range of reading topic was expanded. These findings indicate that the reading program is an effective program for promoting children's reading habit and that outcome evaluation might be a valid tool to measure the effectiveness of public library programs.

The object of analysis is the practice case of the reading program included in 'Occupying School Library by 1318 Bookworms' for recently 10 years. There are 375 cases. According to the analysis result, most of the reading programs have three layers made up of 'blend title- reading activities- educational activities'. And there are classified into eight types (lecture, viewing, presentation, exhibition, making sth, debating, answering a quiz, experience) of the reading activities. The type of reading program depend on how to combine to the educational activities(reading, writing, listening, watching, speaking, making). This attribute of educational activities match up with modularity, completeness itself and organizing system. Through modular process of educational activities, it's possible to design their own reading programs based on the reading activity by adding, compensating other educational activities.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand student's reading motivation by laying out self-selected reading program and running it at school libraries. The self-selected reading program based on self-determination theory ensures the autonomy of book selection. The self-selected reading program in this study provided a number of scope and recommended book lists in order to ensure the autonomy of book selection and developed integrated reading and writing. After finishing this program, the author measured 6 domains of reading motivation with participated students who completed this course. As a result, it turned out that autonomous motive domains excessively surpassed heteronomous motive domains. Such autonomy of book selection, one of the key features from self-selected reading programs, is expected to help making the best use of school library collections by recommended book lists and stimulating stable and sustainable reading habits driven by self-motivation.
