  • Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to study cross sectional profiles and dimensions of fatigue striations in 2017-T351 aluminum alloy. Their widths(SW) and heights (SH, SH(sub)h, SH(sub)ι) were measured from the cross sectional profiles of three-dimension AFM images. The following results that will be helpful to understand the fatigue crack growth mechanism were obtained. (1) The relation of SH=$\alpha$(SW)(sup)1.2 was obtained. (2) The ratio of the striation height to its width SH/SW, SH(sub)h/SW and SH(sub)ι/SW did not depend on the stress intensity factor range ΔK and the stress ratio R( =P(sub)min/P(sub)max = K(sub)min/K(sub)max). (3) Effect of precipitate on the morphology of striation was changed by the relative dimensional difference between the striation width SW and the precipitates. From these results, the applicability of the AFM to nano-fractography is discussed.

  • Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] crops, grown in a rice soybean rotation, can suffer when grown in soil with excessive moisture. The objective of this work were to determine the reduction in growth and yield, responses of vegetative and reproductive growth of soybean to excessive soil moisture achieved by prolonged irrigation. Responses of different cultivars were determined at growth stages from V6 to R8 to clarify the sensitive growth stages or characteristics to excessive soil moisture. Cultivar differences in response to excessive soil moisture condition were conspicuous in seed dry weight and harvest index (HI) but not in the response of seed number or pod number per plant. The timing of irrigation causing the condition of excessive soil moisture influenced the vegetative or reproductive traits. Soybean plants were more affected by irrigation commencing at the pre-flowering than at the post-flowering stage. Post-flowering irrigation did not reduce growth of vegetative organs significantly; in fact the growth of stems and leaves was facilitated by the prolonged irrigation commencing at flowering. Differences between cultivar response to prolonged irrigation were assumed to relate to the reduced amount of assimilates translocated to the reproductive organ.

  • Worldwide, cyst nematode(Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) is the most destructive pathogen of cultivated soybean. In the USA, current annual yield losses are estimated to be nearly a billion dollars. Crop losses are primarily reduced by the use of resistant cultivars. Nematode populations are variable and have adapted to reproduce on resistant cultivars over time because resistance primarily traces to two soybean accessions. It is important to use diverse resistance sources to develop new nematode resistant cultivars. Soybean PI 494182 is a recent introduction from Japan and found to be resistant to multiple nematode populations. It is yellow seeded and maturity group 0. We have determined inheritance of resistance in PI 494182 using $F_{2:3}$ families derived from cross PI 494182 X cv. Skylla. Skylla is a susceptible parent. Three nematode populations, races 1, 3, and 5, corresponding to HG types 2.5.7, 0, and 2.5.7 were used to bioassay 162 $F_{2:3}$ families in greenhouse experiments. Based on Chi-square tests, a two-gene model is proposed for resistance to race 1 and a three-gene model is proposed for conditioning resistance to both races 3 and 5. Correlation coefficient analysis indicated that some genes conditioning resistance to races 1, 3, and 5 are shared or closely linked with each other. These results will be useful to soybean breeders for developing soybean cultivars for broad resistance to nematodes.

  • The ionic association constant (K) of N-methyl pyridinium iodide (NMPI) ion in several ethanol-water mixtures were determined by the combination of UV spectroscopy and conductance measurements using the Shedlovsky function as a correction factor. The measurement of electrical conductance and UV absorption were performed in 95, 90, 80 and 60 volume percentages of ethanol in the solvent mixture at 15, 25, 35 and 45 $({\pm}0.1)^{\circ}C$. The ion size parameter $(r_A+_D-)$ and the dipole moment $({\mu}_A+_D-)$ of NMPI ion were obtained from he linear plots of ln K vs. (1/D) and (D-1)/(2D+1), respectively. These ${\mu}_A+_D-$ values were in good agreement with the values of transition moment calculated from the equation, ${\mu}_{nm}=6.5168{\times}10^{-2}{\times}({\varepsilon}_{max}{\frac{\bar{\nu}_{\frac{1}{2}}}{\bar{\nu}_{max}})^{\frac{1}{2}}$ (Debye) which we have derived. The thermodynamic parameters indicate (1) that the water dipoles have an ordered rearrangement around the dipolar NMPI ions rather than the configuration existing in bulk free waters; and (2) that the equilibrium state between NMPI ion and its component ions are controlled by entropy.

  • By adding 1wt.% $HfB_{2}$ into $Nd_{3-4}Fe_{77-78.5}B_{18.5}$ alloys, the grain growth of $Fe_{3}B/Nd_{2}Fe_{14}B$ composite phases during annealing was found to be hindered by 40~50%. It is proposed that the addition of $HfB_{2}$ leads to the formation of fine dispersoids of $HfB_{2}$ in the $Fe_{3}B/Nd_{2}Fe_{14}B$ composite magnet. The maximum energy product($(B.H)_{max}$) as well as intrinsic coercivity($_{i}H_{c}$) for the $Nd_{3}Fe_{78.5}B_{18.5}\;+\;1wt.%\;HfB_{2}$ alloy were enhanced by more than 25% $(B.H)_{max}=10\;MGOe,\;_{i}H_{c}=2.5\;kOe)$ due to the addition of $HfB_{2}$ while remanent magntization($B_{r}$) was reduced slightly. Itis deduced that the formation of fine dispersoids will also play a role of magnetic domain pinning.

  • The influence of crystallization treatment on the structure, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of $Gd_{71}Ni_{29}$ melt-spun ribbons has been investigated in detail. Annealing of the melt-spun samples at 610 K for 30 min, a majority phase with a $Fe_3C$-type orthorhombic structure (space group, Pnma) and a minority phase with a CrB-type orthorhombic structure (space group, Cmcm) were obtained in the amorphous matrix. The amorphous melt-spun ribbons undergo a second-order ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition at 122 K. For the annealed samples, two magnetic phase transitions caused by amorphous matrix and $Gd_3Ni$ phases occur at 82 and 100 K, respectively. The maximum magnetic entropy change $(-{\Delta}S_M)^{max}$ is $9.0J/(kg{\cdot}K)$ (5T) at 122 K for the melt-spun ribbons. The values of $(-{\Delta}S_M)^{max}$ in annealed ribbons are 1.0 and $5.7J/(kg{\cdot}K)$, corresponding to the two adjacent magnetic transitions.

  • This study aimed to estimate the photosynthetic capacity of tomato plants grown in a semi-closed greenhouse using temperature response models of plant photosynthesis by calculating the ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax), maximum electron transport rate (Jmax), thermal breakdown (high-temperature inhibition), and leaf respiration to predict the optimal conditions of the CO2-controlled greenhouse, for maximizing the photosynthetic rate. Gas exchange measurements for the A-Ci curve response to CO2 level with different light intensities {PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) 200µmol·m-2·s-1 to 1500µmol·m-2·s-1} and leaf temperatures (20℃ to 35℃) were conducted with a portable infrared gas analyzer system. Arrhenius function, net CO2 assimilation (An), thermal breakdown, and daylight leaf respiration (Rd) were also calculated using the modeling equation. Estimated Jmax, An, Arrhenius function value, and thermal breakdown decreased in response to increased leaf temperature (> 30℃), and the optimum leaf temperature for the estimated Jmax was 30℃. The CO2 saturation point of the fifth leaf from the apical region was reached at 600ppm for 200 and 400µmol·m-2·s-1 of PAR, at 800ppm for 600 and 800µmol·m-2·s-1 of PAR, at 1000ppm for 1000µmol of PAR, and at 1500ppm for 1200 and 1500µmol·m-2·s-1 of PAR levels. The results suggest that the optimal conditions of CO2 concentration can be determined, using the photosynthetic model equation, to improve the photosynthetic rates of fruit vegetables grown in greenhouses.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare and evaluate the dose change according to the gas volume variations in the rectum, which was not included in the treatment plan during radiation therapy for cervical cancer. Materials and methods: Static Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (S-IMRT) using a 9-field and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) using 2 full-arcs were established with treatment planning system on Computed Tomography images of a human phantom. Random gas parameters were included in the Planning Target Volume(PTV) with a maximum change of 2.0 cm in increments of 0.5 cm. Then, the Conformity Index (CI), Homogeneity Index (HI) and PTV Dmax for the target volume were calculated, and the minimum dose (Dmin), mean dose (Dmean) and Maximum Dose (Dmax) were calculated and compared for OAR(organs at risk). For statistical analysis, T-test was performed to obtain a p-value, where the significance level was set to 0.05. Result: The HI coefficients of determination(R2) of S-IMRT and VMAT were 0.9423 and 0.8223, respectively, indicating a relatively clear correlation, and PTV Dmax was found to increase up to 2.8% as the volume of a given gas parameter increased. In case of OAR evaluation, the dose in the bladder did not change with gas volume while a significant dose difference of more than Dmean 700 cGy was confirmed in rectum using both treatment plans at gas volumes of 1.0 cm or more. In all values except for Dmean of bladder, p-value was less than 0.05, confirming a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: In the case of gas generation not considered in the reference treatment plan, as the amount of gas increased, the dose difference at PTV and the dose delivered to the rectum increased. Therefore, during radiation therapy, it is necessary to make efforts to minimize the dose transmission error caused by a large amount of gas volumes in the rectum. Further studies will be necessary to evaluate dose transmission by not only varying the gas volume but also where the gas was located in the treatment field.

  • The quality and functionality of machined products is determined by surface finish. The surface roughness is characterized by roughness parameters such as R $_{a}$ and R $_{max}$. While such parameters are useful to define the quality of surface, they are nor sufficiently descriptive characteristics of surface. The fractal dimension which can describe characteristics od surface roughness than conventional roughness parameters has been applied. In this work, Relation between fractal dimension and surface roughness will be examined as a means of characterizing surface roughness.s.s.
