Application of Random Forests to Association Studies Using Mitochondrial Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms

  • In previous nuclear genomic association studies, Random Forests (RF), one of several up-to-date machine learning methods, has been used successfully to generate evidence of association of genetic polymorphisms with diseases or other phenotypes. Compared with traditional statistical analytic methods, such as chi-square tests or logistic regression models, the RF method has advantages in handling large numbers of predictor variables and examining gene-gene interactions without a specific model. Here, we applied the RF method to find the association between mitochondrial single nucleotide polymorphisms (mtSNPs) and diabetes risk. The results from a chi-square test validated the usage of RF for association studies using mtDNA. Indexes of important variables such as the Gini index and mean decrease in accuracy index performed well compared with chi-square tests in favor of finding mtSNPs associated with a real disease example, type 2 diabetes.

A study on improving leadership of reserve officers' training corps (ROTC) (학군장교 (ROTC) 리더십 향상 방안 연구)

  • ROTC is the system that selects the best students in university and implements the military training of two years and uses them as beginning commander of the army by commissioning as officers. ROTC makes up a very large portion of the army and society in Korea in terms of the size and role. Therefore, it is very important to enhance intangible combat power of the Korean army by improving leadership of primary grade officer from ROTC. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether or not ROTC candidate training program is providing the right training, so as to improve ROTC's leadership and present improvement plan. First, we divide ROTC candidate training program into three areas and take the 1st and 2nd survey. Then we compare and analyze the actual condition and recognition of investigation using statistical analysis methods such as chi-square test, ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test. Also, we analyze the element affecting the army leader's three qualities formation which are basic elements of ROTC cadet's leadership using multiple regression analysis.

The Diagnostic Assessment of Hand Elevation Test in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to establish the value of hand elevation test as a reproducible provocative test for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods : We had a prospective study of 45 hands of 38 patients diagnosed with CTS between April 2005 and February 2009. The diagnosis of CTS was based on the American Academy of Neurology clinical diagnostic criteria. Experimental and control group patients underwent Tinel's test, Phalen's test, carpal compression test and hand elevation test as provocative tests for CTS. Results : We used chi-square analysis to compare Tinel's test and Phalen's test, carpal compression test with hand elevation test. The sensitivity and specificity of the hand elevation test is 86.7% and 88.9% each. Tinel's test had 82.2% sensitivity and 88.9% specificity. Phalen's test had 84.4% sensitivity and 86.7% specificity. Carpal compression test had 84.4% sensitivity 82.2% specificity. Comparisons of sensitivity and specificity between hand elevation test and Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test had no statistically significant differences. To compare the diagnostic accuracies of four tests, the area under the non-parametric receiver operating character curve was applied. Conclusion : The hand elevation test has higher sensitivity and specificity than Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test. Chi-square statistical analysis confirms the hand elevation test is not ineffective campared with Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test.

  • We obtained medical test data of 150 male from National Health Insurance Corporation, that included physique, blood chemistry, and lifestyle. ${\chi}^2-test$ and logistic regression, and multiple regression were done to verify how CAD risks and/or lifestyle are different between obese and non-obese person. SPSS(version 18) was used for statistical procedures and p-value of .05 was regarded as good through. ${\chi}^2-test$ showed the frequency of hypertension, htperglycemia, hyperlipidemia were higher in obese person than in non-obese This result told us that lifestyle modification could be a key to prevent cardiovascular disease by controlling and managing body composition, especially abdominal obesity.

  • Background : The purpose of present study was to investigate the effect of quadriceps femoris taping in normal gait using 3D motion capture technique. Method : Twenty healthy volunteers, have no musculoskeletal problems, were recruited as subjects for this study. In experimental group, 20 healthy young(males 10 and females 10) were included. The subjects were assessed during two conditions: control tape(no muscle stretched) and quadriceps (muscle stretched)taping application. To obtain the dynamic data, we captured the motion of subject attached markers without taping during repeated gaits five times or more in 7 m Capture volume of gait analysis center. The result was obtained as a mean value in three times. After taping on quadriceps femoris, the same procedure was carried out. Statistical analysis were performed using statistical software packagess SPSS WIN 12.0(SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA). Differences were tested for statistical significance using paired t-test, independent t-test, chi-squared test for comparisons between the muscle stretched and no muscle stretched. Results : The date of 20 subjects who carried out the whole experimental course were statistically analyzed. 1. gait velocity was showed that muscle stretched group had more significantly increased than no muscle stretched group(p<.05). 2. step length was showed that muscle stretched group had more significantly increased than no muscle stretched group(p<.05). 3. cadens was showed that muscle stretched group had more significantly increased than no muscle stretched group(p<.05). Conclusion : kinesio taping on quadriceps femoris promoted cadence, gait velocity, step length in normal subject (muscle stretched) group.

Intensive numerical studies of optimal sufficient dimension reduction with singularity

  • Yoo (2015, Statistics and Probability Letters, 99, 109-113) derives theoretical results in an optimal sufficient dimension reduction with singular inner-product matrix. The results are promising, but Yoo (2015) only presents one simulation study. So, an evaluation of its practical usefulness is necessary based on numerical studies. This paper studies the asymptotic behaviors of Yoo (2015) through various simulation models and presents a real data example that focuses on ordinary least squares. Intensive numerical studies show that the $x^2$ test by Yoo (2015) outperforms the existing optimal sufficient dimension reduction method. The basis estimation by the former can be theoretically sub-optimal; however, there are no notable differences from that by the latter. This investigation confirms the practical usefulness of Yoo (2015).

  • The case study on ground subsidence was conducted and the cause of ground subsidence was evaluated, main cause were insufficient site exploration, inaccurate strength parameters, defective temporary wall, insufficient reaction for boiling and heaving, excessive excavation and so on. Risk factors during excavation were identified from the cause of ground subsidence and risk factors were site exploration, selecting excavation method, structure analysis, measurement plan, excavation method construction, underground water level change, natural disaster and construction management. The survey of the experts on risk factors identified was conducted to evaluate the importance of risk factors, and confidence analysis was performed to evaluate the significance level between survey result and survey respondent using Chi-square Test.

Factors Affecting Clinical Practicum Stress of Nursing Students: Using the Lazarus and Folkman's Stress-Coping Model (간호대학생의 임상실습 스트레스 영향요인에 관한 경로분석: Lazarus와 Folkman의 스트레스-대처 모델 기반으로)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to test a path model for the factors related to undergraduate nursing students' clinical practicum stress, based on Lazarus and Folkman's stress-coping model. Methods: This study utilized a path analysis design. A total of 235 undergraduate nursing students participated in this study. The variables in the hypothetical path model consisted of clinical practicum, emotional intelligence, self-efficacy, Nun-chi, and nursing professionalism. We tested the fit of the hypothetical path model using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and AMOS 22.0. Results: The final model fit demonstrated a satisfactory statistical acceptance level: goodness-of-fit-index=.98, adjusted goodness-of-fit-index=.91, comparative fit index=.98, normed fit index=.95, Tucker-Lewis index=.92, and root mean square error of approximation=.06. Self-efficacy (${\beta}=-.22$, p=.003) and Nun-chi behavior (${\beta}=-.17$, p=.024) were reported as significant factors affecting clinical practicum stress, explaining 10.2% of the variance. Nursing professionalism (${\beta}=.20$, p=.006) and self-efficacy (${\beta}=.45$, p<.001) had direct effects on emotional intelligence, explaining 45.9% of the variance. Self-efficacy had indirect effects on Nun-chi understanding (${\beta}=.20$, p<.001) and Nun-chi behavior (${\beta}=.09$, p=.005) through emotional intelligence. Nursing professionalism had indirect effects on Nun-chi understanding (${\beta}=.09$, p=.005) and Nun-chi behavior (${\beta}=.09$, p=.005) through emotional intelligence. The variables for self-efficacy and nursing professionalism explained 29.1% of the Nun-chi understanding and 18.2% of the Nun-chi behavior, respectively. Conclusion: In undergraduate nursing education, it is important to identify and manage factors that affect clinical practicum stress. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of Nun-chi, self-efficacy, emotional intelligence, and nursing professionalism in the development of an educational strategy for undergraduate nursing students.

A comparative evaluation of fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with different post core systems - an in-vitro study

  • PURPOSE. To compare the fracture resistance and the mode of failure of endodontically treated teeth restored with different post-core systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Root canal treatment was performed on 40 maxillary incisors and the samples were divided into four groups of 10 each. For three experimental groups post space preparation was done and teeth were restored with cast post-core (Group B), stainless steel post with composite core (Group C) and glass fiber post with composite core using adhesive resin cement (Group D). Control group (A) samples were selected with intact coronal structure. All the samples were prepared for ideal abutment preparation. All the samples were subjected to a load of 0.5 mm/min at $130^{circ}$.until fracture occurred using the universal testing machine. The fracture resistance was measured and the data were analyzed statistically. The fracture above the embedded resin was considered to be favorable and the fracture below the level was considered as unfavorable. The statistical analysis of fracture resistance between different groups was carried out with t-test. For the mode of failure the statistical analysis was carried out by Kruskal-Wallis test and Chi-Square test. RESULTS. For experimental group Vs control group the fracture resistance values showed significant differences (P<.05). For the mode of failure the chi-square value is 16.1610, which means highly significant (P=.0009) statistically. CONCLUSION. Endodontically treated teeth without post core system showed the least fracture resistance demonstrating the need to reinforce the tooth. Stainless steel post with composite core showed the highest fracture resistance among all the experimental groups. Teeth restored with the Glass fiber post showed the most favorable fractures making them more amenable to the re-treatment.

  • Computer programs for IBM PC/XT/AT or compatibles, are presented for running 9 nonparametric tests. They include sign test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, Mann-Whitney Wilcoxon test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov one sample and two sample tests, Kendall and Spearman rank correlation coefficient tests, and Chi square test for contingency table. Each program is written with BASIC language and is combined into a statistical package, 'NONPARA'. It is easily accessible through the menu programs. The alogorithms on which each test is based, are also explained and 3 examples are given.
