In order to determine the proper treatment of the finished landfill, it is important to predict the trend and stability of the major sources of contaminant in the landfill. In this paper the fate of contaminant sources in the landfill is studied from various literatures by grouping the contaminants into waste, leachate, and landfill gas. One example site referred is Nanji landfill which is one of the representative finished landfills in our country and the trend of contaminant sources in this landfill at current stage is discussed.

The stabilization and reclamation of old disposal sites is becoming more important as significant numbers of disposal sites are closed and abandoned. This technical paper covers an overview of the key issues and methodologies for stabilizing and constructing facilities on old landfills. The slide portion of this presentation also include photographs showing actual construction activities. The key issues that are prevalent in remediating and closing old landfills are : correcting the stormwater flow, leachate breakout, constructing cover caps, controlling landfill gas migration and odors, cleanup groundwater and stabilizing side slopes. Some key techniques for constructing facilities on old landfills include： use of piling, installation of active landfill gas systems, providing LFG barriers under buildings, using utilidors and flexible utility interfaces and designing for site settlement. The largest installed bases of municipal waste Incinerators are located in Japan and the U.S. The volume of waste contained in a landfill can be estimated by load count tabulations, weight-and-volume measurements or a material balance analysis based on the trash profile of user categories. for an existing landfill, core samples may be collected and analyzed for use in a material balance analysis. Newly generated refuse contains approximately 50% of the heating value of coal.
