Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of affective and cognitive empathy, and peer competence on behavioral problems among young children. Methods: The participants were 224 4- to 5-year-olds attending daycare centers in Gyeonggi-do. Children's empathy, peer competence, and behavioral problems were reported by their teachers. The collected data were analyzed using simple regression and three-step hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Results: The results showed that children who exhibited low affective empathy scored higher on peer acceptance and behavioral problems than children who had high affective empathy. This pattern of results was similarly found with cognitive empathy. Additionally, the effect of children's affective empathy on behavioral problems was fully mediated by peer competence, whereas the effect of children's cognitive empathy on behavioral problems was partially mediated by peer competence. Conclusion: These results suggest the need for peer-competence training based on affective empathy and training for both peer competence and cognitive empathy in reducing behavioral problems among young children.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of family economic distress, paternal depression, marital relationship, and controlling parenting style on behavioral problems in young children and to present a program for their reduction. The participants of this study were 344 fathers, whose young children were attending kindergartens located in Cheongju city. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, frequency, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and Pearson's productive correlation, t and F-tests via the SPSS 12.0 program, with the path model analyzed using the AMOS 7.0 program. There were six paths where family economic distress, mediated by paternal depression, marital relationship, controlling parenting style, had effects on the behavioral problems in young children. However, the path where family economic distress had an indirect effect on the behavioral problems in young children via paternal depression and marital relationship appeared to be the most influential. Also, paternal depression appeared to have the most impact on young children's behavioral problems.
The purpose of this study is to see how young children's playfulness and ability to creatively problem solve can affect their behavior. young children's playfulness in creases with in creasing creativity and personality traits and behavioral problems decrease with increasing of playfulness. Young children's behavioral problems increase with increasing of creative personality traits. In addition, young children's playfulness and creative personality characteristics affect their behavioral problems. The impact on the behavioral problems with variables for playfulness and creative personality traits has a negative correlation with creative curiosity, a sense of humor and expression of fun. The cognitive and physical spontaneity of the playfulness are correlated positively to young children's behavioral problems.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of mother's psychological control, children's behavioral autonomy and self control on children's behavioral problems(depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggression). The subjects were 293 6th graders residing in Cheonan. It was found that children's perceptions of mother's psychological control was significantly related with the level of children's depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggression. In addition, Children's behavioral autonomy was significantly predictor of depression and anxiety. Children's depression and aggression were influenced by self control of children. Finally the relative effect of mother's psychological control, children's behavioral autonomy and self control on problems behavior were as follows. Children's depression and anxiety were predicted by mother's psychological control. The other side withdrawal problem. was influenced by mother's psychological control on boys, by self control on girls. The children's aggression was influenced by self control in all cases.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the path of parental divorce on their children's emotional and behavioral problems through child-rearing behaviors and children's self-esteem. The participants were 162 children from divorced families and 194 from intact families. The Instruments used were CBQ (Children's Behaviour Questionnaire) (Rutter, 1967), Child-rearing rating scale (Park, 1995) and SEI (Self Esteem Inventory) (Coopersmith, 1967). The data were analyzed by ANCOVA and path analysis. The results were as follows. First, there were significant differences in children's emotional and behavioral problems and self-esteem, and caregivers' child-rearing behaviors between children from divorced and intact families. Second, parental divorce affected children's emotional and behavioral problems directly, as well as indirectly through child-rearing behaviors and children's self-esteem.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors of child behavioral problems and construct a descriptive model that explains child behavioral problems for school age children. Method: The participants in the study were 586 4th, 5th, 6th graders and their mothers. The children attended 8 elementary schools located in Taejon city and their mothers. The tools used in this study was the Mother's Child Raising Behavior Scale by Park, Seong-Yeon and Yi, Sook(1990). To measure child's self esteem, the Self Esteem Scale by Kim(1987) was used; child perceived social support was measured with the Social Support Evaluation Scale by Dubow and Ullman(1989), and childhood behavioral problems were measured with the Korean standardized of version of the Korean-Child Behavior Checklist(K-CBCL)(1997). Descriptive statistics and linear structural relationship(LISREL) modeling were used to analyze the data. SAS and LISREL 8.12a programs were used. Results: The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was good $>X^2=103.07(p=0.00)$, GFI=0.96, AGFI=0.94, RMSR=0.04, RMSEA=0.07, NFI=0.94, NNFI=0.95< Maternal child raising behaviors(T=2.21) and child perceived social support(T=10.29) had a significant, direct effect on a child's self esteem. Maternal child raising behaviors(T=-3.87), and child self esteem(T=-2.04) and had a significant total effect on child behavioral problems. These variables accounted for 63% of the variance of the child behavioral problems in the school age children. Conclusion: These finding have provided support for maternal child raising behaviors, child perceived social support, and child self esteem as predictive variables of behavioral problems in school age children.
In infants and young children, bedtime problems and night waking are common and the main presentations of insomnia. Poor sleep may critically impact the daytime functioning and mood of the child and their caregivers. A comprehensive sleep history, a sleep diary/log, and the BEARS (Bedtime problems, Excessive daytime sleepiness, Awakenings during the night, Regularity and duration of sleep, and Sleep-disordered breathing) sleep screen are useful for diagnosing sleep problems in young children. Behavioral therapies for this type of insomnia include extinction, bedtime fading with positive routines, and scheduled awakening. Previous studies of behavioral interventions for young children showed significant improvements in sleep-onset latency, night waking frequency, and night waking duration. Parent education about their child's sleep, bedtime routines, and sleep hygiene is essential for treatment.
The current study examined the effects of socio-demographic characteristics and peer relations on the emotional, behavioral, and comorbid disorder symptoms among low-low-SES children, using the Young Lives Survey: an International Study of Childhood Poverty: Round 1, 2002. Participants were 1,000 8-year-old children (502 boys and 498 girls) from low-low-SES families. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, t-tests, post hoc test (Scheffe's method), correlations, and multiple logistic regression analyses according to the analysis strategy. There was a moderate correlation between selected socio-demographic variables and emotional/behavioral disorder symptoms, and the caregiver's marital status, child's health compared to others, child's work status corresponded to significant differences in their emotional/behavior levels. Regarding the logistic regression analysis, in addition to the effects of socio-demographic variables reflecting the characteristics of less-developed countries, marital status, child's working status, and conflicts with peers proved to be detrimental to emotional, behavioral, or comorbid disorder symptoms in low-SES children, who have been lack quality parenting, social resources, and child human rights. Results indicated the need to develop health care services that would address those problems and appropriate intervention and prevention programs targeting children in low-income families. Moreover, careful assessment and intervention for child's health status, child's working status and peer relationship problems are suggested as possible strategies for helping children at risk of exhibiting further problematic behaviors.
The subjects in this study of parenting attitudes, children's behavior problems and attention ability were 111 5-year-old children and their parents. Data was analyzed by mean, frequency, percent, three-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation. Results showed that behavior problems and attention ability of children varied by the parenting attitude of mothers and fathers. Behavior problems of boys were higher than girls, and boys' attention abilities were lower than girls.' Interaction effects were found between parenting attitudes and gender in children's behavior problems and attention ability : fathers' autonomy correlated negatively with boys' behavior problems (r=-.47), task processing speed (r=-.37), and attention inconsistency (r=-.36). Children's behavioral problems correlated positively with attention inconsistency (r=.28).
The purpose of this study was to examine whether there was a difference in the recognition and teaching strategies for the young child's behavioral problems according to teachers' socio-demographic variables and ego-resiliency level by analyzing survey responses from 238 teachers of 3, 4, and 5-year-old children. This study found that the group of teachers with the education level of junior college graduation or higher showed higher degree of recognition of children's behavioral problems than the group of teachers with a lower level of education. And the group of teachers at kindergartens showed a higher degree of recognition of children's behavioral problems than the group of teachers at day care centers. Regarding the difference according to the level of ego-resiliency, the group of higher ego-resiliency showed higher degree of recognition of children's behavioral problems than the group of lower ego-resiliency. In terms of teachers' teaching strategies for the behavioral problems, differences were recognized at sub-categories. To explain, differences were recognized in accordance with the teachers' age and career as well as their education level and work place; the higher the teachers' age, career, and education the more often they used the positive prevention strategy I. And teachers at kindergartens resorted to the negative response strategies more often than those at day care centers. Finally, the teaching strategies for the behavioral problems according to the teachers' ego-resiliency, group differences were seen in all the sub categories. The result of this study suggested that the need to develop and apply such programs for pre-service teachers and for teacher reeducation reflect those variables.
