A Study on Lightning Overvoltage Characteristics of Grounding Systems in Underground Distribution Power Cables

  • This paper investigates the transient characteristics of grounding systems used in under-ground distribution power cables. Recently, two kinds of grounding system are used for underground distribution cables in Korea. The first one is conventional multi-point grounding system, the other is newly proposed non-bundled common grounding system. The non-bundled common grounding system has an advantage the decreasing the power loss due to decrease of the shield circulation current. In this paper, the lightning overvoltage induced in neutral wire (in case of non-bundled common grounding system, overvoltage between opened neural wires and grounding in each phase) of these two kinds of grounding systems are estimated and compared by field tests and EMTP simulations. The EMTP simulation methods are firstly verified by comparison of measurement and simulation. Finally, the insulation level against lightning is expected by EMTP simulation results using verified model.

  • The study for ubiquitous computing infra is proceeding actively, it make possible to use service and access network anywhere, anytime because of wire/wireless communication technology and progress of hardware. Domestically, study for the network mobility support technology which is the key technology for future ubiquitous computing realization have progressed, but that is insufficient. Especially, there is no study for independent mobility support study about railway wireless network. So, this study propose network mobility management technology for mobile network infra in railway and proper network model in train.

  • With the proliferation of nonlinear loads, high neutral harmonic currents in three-phase four-wire distribution system have been observed. It has been. known that the ground impedance has an effect on the neutral currents of a system which operates with harmonics present. On-site measurements of harmonic currents and voltages according to the fell-of-potential method under case study system were made and the ground impedance modeling using the pattern search method for the harmonic analysis was developed. The ground impedance model obtained by the proposed method was compared with the frequency characteristics by field tests and has shown appropriate results, and would be applicable to evaluate the harmonic and transient response characteristics of the ground system.

A Study on the Elasticity Disuniformity for Catenary using by Beam Model (빔 모델을 이용한 전차선 불균일율에 관한 연구)

  • A catenary system should be designed to be an uniform elasticity over a span in order to maintain the lowest possible loss of contact between a pantograph and a contact wire. A elasticity disuniformity of a catenary can be regarded as a important design factor used for predicting the current collection performance for a catenary. There are a couple of formulas to calculate elasticity disuniformity of a catenary according to the literature survey, The effectiveness of these formulas is reviewed by performing catenary elasticity and loss of contact analysis for 5 different configurations of catenary systems using a beam element based FEM program, KRRI developed program, and the loss of contact by GASENDO, RTRI developed program, respective]y. The results reveals that these formulas are not suitable to predict the current collection performance for a catenary. Therefore, a new formula based on the standard deviation of the elasticity over a span is proposed in this study. The analysis results show that the new formula for an elasticity disuniformity of a catenary is very effective in predicting the current collection performance for a catenary.

Mathematical Models for Optimal Bead Geometry for GMA Welding Process

  • A major concern in Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding process is the determination of welding process variables such as wire diameter, gas flow rate, welding speed, arc current and welding voltage and their effects on the desired weld bead dimensions and shape. To successfully accomplish this objective, 81 welded samples from mild steel AS 1204 flats adopting the bead-on-plate technique were employed in the experiment. The experimental results were used to develop a mathematical model to predict the magnitude of bead geometry as follows; weld bead width, weld bead height, weld bead penetration depth, weld penetration shape factor, weld reinforcement shape factor, weld bead total area, weld bead penetration area, weld bead reinforcement area, weld bead dilution, length of weld bead penetration boundary and length of weld bead reinforcement boundary, and to establish the relationships between weld process parameters and bead geomery. Multiple regression analysis was employed for investigating and modeling the GMA process and significance test techniques were applied for the interpretation of the experimental data.

A Study on Flow Induced Vibration of Cantilever Plate with Angle of Attack (받음각을 갖는 평판보의 유동 여기진동에 관한 연구)

  • Experimental studies are conducted to investigate the Flow-Induced Vibration mechanism for cantilever plate model with the angle of attack (.alpha.=10.deg., 20.deg., 30.deg.). Research is divided into two parts. First, the flow fields around two dimensional flat plate model are investigated using LDV system. Second, the vortex shedding frequency and response spectra of cantilever plate are obtained experimentally using gap sensor and hot wire anemometer. Finite element method program was used in order to predict the flow field and pressure field around thin flat plate. And some predicted results were compared with the experimental data. The aspect ration of test model is d/t=25 (d; width, t; thickness). From the measurement of the flow field it was found that in the case of small inclined (.alpha.=10.deg., 20.deg.) relatively, the separated boundary layer at sharp leading edge developed smoothly downstream. With increasing the angle of attack of the plate, stagnation region was appeared on the back side of the plate and separated boundary layer was extended downstream. These trends are a good agreement with the computational results. It was found by analysis of response spectra of cantilever plate that the influences of vortex shedding frequency were important at the large of attack (.alpha.=30.deg.), and two peak values appear in entire test model at 24Hz, 150Hz.

  • Tandem arc welding is a guarantor for high efficiency and cost saving since the quantity of wire which is deposited in the welding is approximated 30% greater that in conventional welding. The welding process is now being successfully applied in many industries. However, in the case of tandem arc welding, good quality and high productivity should depend on the welding parameters. Therefore, an intelligent algorithms for the automatic tandem arc welding process has been necessarily required. In this study, a predictive model based on the neural network by using the data acquired during tandem gas metal arc (GMA) welding process has been developed. To verify the reliability of the developed predictive model, a mutual comparison with the surface of the top-bead width obtained from actual experiments has been analyzed.

Application of Electromagnetic Wave for Evaluating Necking Defects in Bored Piles (현장타설말뚝의 네킹 결함 평가를 위한 전자기파의 적용성 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to demonstrate the suitability of electromagnetic waves for evaluating necking defects in bored piles using electromagnetic waves. Experiments are conducted with small-scaled defective model pile with diameter of 150 mm and length of 270 mm. Two necking defects are generated at the upper and lower positions on two different sides of the model pile, respectively. The other two necking defects are generated at the upper and lower positions on the same side of the model pile. Electrical wires are installed alongside the stainless steel wire of a steel cage to configure a two-conductor transmission line. A time-domain reflectometer is used to generate and defect electromagnetic waves. The experimental results show that electromagnetic waves are reflected at the necking defects and the end of the model pile. In addition, calculated defect locations are almost the same as actual defect locations. This study demonstrates that electromagnetic waves can be effective tool for evaluating necking defects in bored piles.

  • The image information acquired by a model submarine is transmitted through the repeater. The control signal of a position for submarine and its speed is also controlled by the repeater. Shooting images of underwater circumstances are transmitted to the repeater where the received signal controls a position and speed of underwater submarine. This repeater is combined by a buoy that is floating on the surface to relay the signal of image as well as control between a control unit and a submarine whereas the repeater communicates wirelessly with a control unit. Due to wire communication between the repeater and the submarine, the underwater exploration can be smoothly carried out without a risk of loss of a model submarine. Also, connecting to the repeater and control unit wirelessly makes it possible to conduct easily the underwater exploration. The convergence technology that combines a wireless communication and a control as well as a model submarine is designed.
