TWO-FLUID CLOSURE PARAMETERS FOR DIFFUSIVE ACCELERATION OF COSMIC RAYS

  • In order to explore the time dependence of the closure parameters of the two-fluid calculations for supernova remnants and the terminal shocks of stellar winds, we have considered a simple model in which the time evolution of the cosmic-ray distribution function was followed in the test-particle limit using the Bohm diffusion model. The particles are mostly accelerated to relativistic energy either in the free expansion phase of the SNRs or in the early phase of the stellar winds, so the evolution of the closure parameters during these early stages is substantial and should be followed correctly. We have also calculated the maximum momentum which is limited by either the age or the curvature of these spherical shocks. We found that SNRs expanding into the medium where the gas density decreases with the distance from the explosion center might be necessary to explain the observed power-law distribution of the galactic cosmic rays. The energy loss due to the escaping energetic particles has been estimated for the terminal shocks of the stellar winds.

Some recent extreme wind events in New Zealand

  • Damaging winds, associated with a variety of weather phenomena, are frequently experienced in New Zealand. Observations and modelling of two recent extreme wind events; the Taranaki tornado outbreak of July 2007, and the Greymouth down-slope easterly wind storm of July 2008 are described in detail here. Post-event engineering damage surveys, rare for New Zealand, were done for these storms and the results are summarized here. Finally, the issue of sampling extreme wind events is raised and the need to include detailed numerical modelling analysis to understand wind gust climatologies at observing sites and extending these to wider regions is discussed.

Radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of ram pressure strippin on star-forming galaxies

  • Recent observational studies suggest that the environmental effects can shape the evolution of galaxies in clusters. In an attempt to better understand this process, we perform idealized radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of RAM pressure stripping on star-forming galaxies using RAMSES-RT. We find that extended HI disks are easily stripped by moderate ICM winds, while there is no significant decrease in the total mass of molecular gas. RAM pressure tends to compress the molecular gas, leading to enhanced star formation especially when the gaseous disk is hit by edge-on winds. On the other hand, strong ICM winds that are expected to operate at the centre of clusters strip both HI and molecular gas from the galaxy. Interestingly, we find that the strong ICM winds can induce the formation of relatively dense (~1H/cc) HI gas clouds at a distance from the disk.

  • Currently, the devices to generate ion winds in air are mainly composed of corona electrodes and induction(ground) electrodes, of which the corona electrodes mainly use needles or wires as electrodes and the induction electrodes use plate electrodes of ring or mesh type. Ion winds can be effectively generated through a diverse combination of corona electrodes and induction electrodes mentioned above. However, only changing the form and structure of corona electrodes and induction electrodes has a limit in raising the speed of ion winds. This paper conducted a study on the characteristics of ion wind generation by additionally installing acceleration electrodes in addition to corona electrodes and induction electrodes to increase the speed of ion winds.

한반도 주변해역의 기상부이와 등표에서 관측된 계절별 해상풍과 유의파고 특성 (Seasonal Characteristics of Sea Surface Winds and Significant Wave Heights Observed Marine Meterological Buoys and Lighthouse AWSs near the Korean Peninsula)

  • The seasonal variations of sea surface winds and significant wave heights were investigated using the data observed from the marine meteorological buoys (nine stations) and Automatic Weather Stations (AWSs) in lighthouse (nine stations) around the Korean Peninsula during 2010~2012. In summer, the prevailing sea surface winds over the East/West Sea and the South Sea were northerly/southerly and easterly/westerly winds due to both of southeast monsoon and the shape of Korean Peninsula. On the other hand, the strong northerly winds has been observed at most stations near Korean marginal seas under northwest monsoon in winter. However, the sea surface winds at some stations (e.g. Galmaeyeo, Haesuseo in the West Sea) have different characteristics due to topographic effects such as island or coastal line. The significant wave heights are the highest in winter and the lowest in summer at most stations. In case of some lighthouse AWSs surrounded by islands (e.g. Haesuseo, Seosudo) or close to coast (e.g. Gangan, Jigwido), very low significant wave heights (below 0.5 m) with low correlations between sea surface wind speeds and significant wave heights were observed.

Assessment of vertical wind loads on lattice framework with application to thunderstorm winds

  • The focus of this article is on the assessment of vertical wind vector components and their aerodynamic impact on lattice framework, specifically two distinct sections of a guyed transmission tower. Thunderstorm winds, notably very localized events such as convective downdrafts (including downbursts) and tornadoes, result in a different load on a tower's structural system in terms of magnitude and spatial distribution when compared to horizontal synoptic winds. Findings of previous model-scale experiments are outlined and their results considered for the development of a testing rig that allows for rotation about multiple body axes through a series of wind tunnel tests. Experimental results for the wind loads on two unique experimental models are presented and the difference in behaviour discussed. For a model cross arm with a solidity ratio of approximately 30%, the drag load was increased by 14% when at a pitch angle of $20^{\circ}$. Although the effects of rotation about the vertical body axis, or the traditional 'angle of attack', are recognized by design codes as being significant, provisions for vertical winds are absent from each set of wind loading specifications examined. The inclusion of a factor to relate winds with a vertical component to the horizontal speed is evaluated as a vertical wind factor applicable to load calculations. Member complexity and asymmetric geometry often complicate the use of lattice wind loading provisions, which is a challenge that extends to future studies and codification. Nevertheless, the present work is intended to establish a basis for such studies.

도플러 라이다를 이용한 ICE-POP 2018 기간 수평바람 연직 프로파일 산출 및 정확도 평가 (Retrieval and Accuracy Evaluation of Horizontal Winds from Doppler Lidars During ICE-POP 2018)

  • This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of retrieved horizontal winds with different quality control methods from three Doppler lidars deployed over the complex terrain during the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic games. To retrieve the accurate wind profile, this study also proposes two quality control methods to distinguish between meteorological signals and noises in the Doppler velocity field, which can be broadly applied to different Doppler lidars. We evaluated the accuracy of retrieved winds with the wind measurements from the nearby or collocated rawinsondes. The retrieved wind speed and direction show a good agreement with rawinsonde with a correlation coefficient larger than 0.9. This study minimized the sampling error in the wind evaluation and estimation, and found that the accuracy of retrieved winds can reach ~0.6 m s-1 and 3° in the quasi-homogeneous wind condition. We expect that the retrieved horizontal winds can be used in the high-resolution analysis of the horizontal winds and provide an accurate wind profile for model evaluation or data assimilation purposes.

광릉 KoFlux 관측지 계곡에서의 국지순환 수치모의 (Numerical Simulation of Local Atmospheric Circulations in the Valley of Gwangneung KoFlux Sites)

  • 90m 고해상도 SRTM 지형자료를 장착한 WRF 수치모형을 이용하여 광릉 활엽수림 KoFlux 타워(GDK)와 침엽수림 KoFlux 타워(GCK)가 위치한 계곡 및 주변에서의 국지 대기순환을 식생-대기 이산화탄소 순환 및 미기상학적 관점에서 연구하였다. 지표 부근 온도와 바람에 대하여 모형과 관측 결과를 비교함으로써 모형의 전반적인 성능을 평가하였고, 연구 지역에 국지순환이 발생한 맑은 날(Case I)과 흐린 날(Case II) 사례를 선정하여 수치모의를 수행하고 그 결과를 정성적으로 분석하였다. 관측된 바람장은 GDK와 GCK 간에, 또 Case I과 Case II 간에 주간 및 야간 국지풍의 시작, 종료, 지속시간, 강도 등에 차이를 보였다. 모형의 수치모의 결과들은 광릉 KoFlux 타워 관측으로부터 그 가능성이 제기된 관측지 계곡의 배수류가 실제로 존재함을 증거하였다. 전반적으로 모형이 모의한 바람장은 아침의 배수류-사면활승풍 전이와 저녁의 사면활승풍 역전 등을 포함하여 계곡 및 주변에서 관측된 국지풍의 일변화를 현실적으로 모사하였다. 또한 국지풍 간 상호작용의 복잡성도 지시하였는데, 가령 주간에 광릉 관측지 계곡 내부의 서풍은 반드시 산풍인 것은 아니었으며, 종종 약한 종관규모 바람 또는 서쪽에서 불어온 해풍과 같은 보다 큰 규모의 중규모 바람 등 다른 풍계와 결합이 되어 있었다. 광릉 생태계의 에너지, 물질, 정보 흐름의 시공간적 변동을 입체적으로 이해하는데 있어서 이러한 고해상도 국지순환 수치모의 결과는 상당히 유용한 것으로 판단되며, 구축된 국지모의 시스템을 지속적으로 개선하는 노력이 향후 뒤따라야 할 것이다. 아울러, 다른 농림생태계 관측지도 모의 영역에 포함시켜 모형 결과의 활용도를 넓힐 필요가 있다.

해수순환모델(FVCOM)을 이용한 하구의 조위 변화에 미치는 국부적 바람의 영향 (Local Winds Effects on the Water Surface Variation at the Shallow Estuary, Mobile Bay)

  • 수심이 낮은 하구에서 바람이 국부적인 해수면 상승/하강에 미치는 영향을 연구하기 위해 Mobile Bay에 3차원 해수 순환모델을 적용하였다. Mobile Bay의 남단 경계면, 즉 northern Gulf of Mexico에서 시작된 조위는 Mobile River system 북부까지 직접적인 영향을 준다. 그러나 Mobile Bay 남단에서 발생한 조위변화는 Mobile Bay 북부로 이동하면서 Mobile River system으로부터 들어오는 담수와 국부적 바람의 영향으로 왜곡된다. Mobile Bay 남단에 위치한 기상관측소에서의 바람정보를 Mobile Bay 전체에 적용하였을 경우 Mobile Bay 북부에서 실제보다 강한 바람의 영향으로 과대한 수위 상승과 하강 현상이 발생하였다. 그러나 Mobile Bay 남단과 중단에 위치한 두 개의 관측소에서 측정된 바람 정보를 활용하였을 경우 Mobile Bay 북부에서의 조위 변화를 보다 정확하게 재현하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 바람의 강도가 센 경우 Mobile Bay 남단과 북단의 풍속이 현저하게 차이나는 것으로 나타났으며(~ 88%), 이는 Mobile Bay 북단에서 나무와 건물 등의 영향으로 바람의 강도가 급격하게 줄어들었기 때문으로 판단된다. 따라서 Mobile Bay와 같이 수심이 낮고 국부적으로 풍속이 다른 하구 또는 만에서의 수위변화 재현 또는 예측을 위해서는 국부적인 바람 정보가 매우 중요한 것으로 연구되었다.

전통건축물보존지구내에서의 연소속도식을 고려한 방재계획의 수립과 재난위험도평가 시스템 구축에 관한 연구 (A Study on Disaster Prevention and Risk Assessment System Applying Combustion Velocity at Traditional Housing Zone)

  • The purpose of this study is to set up disaster prevention plan and risk assessment system considering combustion velocity at traditional housing zone. The combustion velocity analysis could contribute to build in disaster prevention technique through the potential risk analysis of the area, such analysis also able to set up comprehensive disaster prevention management system. Following results have achieved through the combustion velocity calculation. \circled1 The combustion velocity was calculated in order of the below winds, the above winds and the side winds. \circled2 It must be careful to set up disaster prevention plan in case of the below winds. \circled3 The combustion velocity was calculated at the density Bone where neighboring Distance and Length was small. \circled4 It proved that factors of each parameter not mostly effect to analyse the combustion velocity in limit of the 30 minutes after ignition. \circled5 At the density zone where Distance and Length is small the duration of transfer to neighboring house takes up to 4 minutes, it is required to set up of emergency response plan to minimize the fire dispersion.
